I wrapped ours with carbon fibre wrap, quick simple and looks great.
I had great trouble in removing old ones,a lot of the little brackets broke off. However after some thought I did a great fix using velcro patches. The only difficulty is obtaining a flat surface, because outer edges are 3 mm higher, but again this is easily resolved by superglue rubber sheet of 3mm thickness before afixing velcro. Job done looks great and very secure upto at least 100 mph
They're looking great now. Very satisfying fix! Great upload
Nicely done! Just FYI, Mercedes recommends using a small piece of sticky butyl tape under the top section to help hold it in place once fitted, and keep the fast moving air and dirt from getting under it.
Great and beautiful fix, you made it look simple Mr. Simon.
My 2006 SLK350 is the same color and has the same problem. It has 103K miles on it, and still looks pretty awesome IMO. Thanks for this video as I was considering painting those strips. I had no idea that I could just replace them.
Thanks for posting this!! I have the EXACT same issue on my R230, so this is great info!!
After coming across your video, I ordered up a pair, £115 for the pair. Changed within an hour. What a difference, as new again 😊
Great to hear!! Why bother with paint or wrap when you can just replace? Cheers!
Hi, mines the same, would you have a part number to get them on eBay, great job, regards
£80 per set at merc main dealer.
@@beastieboy3926 Came here to say that! I'm picking up my new pair in a few minutes. Now I feel confident to do the job myself. Thanks MGUY!
So glad I stumbled across this. How did you get the vario roof to stop half way through?
Thanks for your video. The better way would be to show the installation slowly in your video. Greetings from Germany!
Nice fix with much improved cosmetic appearance.
just recently bought these two guys for my R230
Thank you from LA
The marks are where they rub on the carpet when the roofs down. There are two types (the newer has a revised backing plate - be sure to get the right version for the car)
Great job and information just purchase ,need to replace windows trim
Looks good mate a small change with a real improvement. Cheers from mydailylambo
Need to do the same with my R230
I had that same issue with my car I just polished and cleaned it back like before
Can you post a link to order them please?
That is the common problem slk has! I just asked the shop to vinyl wrap it. It looks amazing and cheap.
Yes, I was going to get them wrapped or painted but then realised I could just get new ones!
We’re did you get the new panels from ? 👍🏻
@@leerainford7359 Mine came from a local MB dealer. £86 for the pair. Apparently, there's more than one type, so they need the reg number of the car. 2 days to order into stock.
Can you tell me how l can get hold of a Mercedes xentry module with cable and without laptop.
A quick video on how to purchas and set up would be great.
Good to see Aussie content on CZcams thanks.
See my reply to your other message 😊
My sl55amg had exactly the same problem.
Mine need doing...Im thinking wrapping is easier...you need a better light !
Hi, MGUY. I have to say thanks a lot to your information sharing, May I ask where did you get the parts ? I have a R-171 200K 2005.

Have exactly the same problem
How do you keep the roof half open? I can't even keep it open for long enough to get a clamp in place as it automatically closes when I stop half way
Piece of 2/3 wood about 270 mm length between top of front frame and roof.
Great video where can you buy this?
I found mine on eBay
@@mguytvwhat is the name on the panel?
Hi, is there a place I can buy replacements that won't bankrupt me. I had no idea you could do this, thanks for the video.
Search on eBay is your best option 🙂
They are only £35 each from Mercedes....not worth getting them elsewhere in my opinion
Hi, regarding the clamp that holds the roof. Isn't it the roof will auto shut by itself after certain of time after beep sound ? How u make it stays there without auto shut ?
Turn the ignition off and the roof will not close (except by gravity when the pressure decreases) so you can just prop it open.
@@mguytv thank you
My 2008 SLK-55 AMG has not done that at all, I guess it depends how well you look after your car....
I think it’s sun damage here in Australia
@@mguytv bought my car in Dubai the hottest and sunniest place on earth 😀 it lived there for 3 years before moving to Brisbane where is has lived for the last 12 so its had a little bit of sun. But in all honesty it rarely gets parked in direct sunlight for too long....
I have an '07 55 and the clear coat on mine was completely finished. I guess it depends on how much time your car spends out in the sun and weather.
Just done mine bloody frustrating. Couldn't get them to sit right for an hour. Banging my head against a wall pulling on my testicles. Then all of a sudden they just slipped in perfectly. Bastards
That's about right!
Exactly how mine just went too.

6 minutes of crap....didn't show how you took it off or put it on. Great job mate!
The more EVs the more battery fires
Next turn it into an EV and save our planet.
Your mistake was buying Mercedes.
How fix the front column panell? (for slk r172)
