Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

"you were meant for better things" damn right he was
Getting shot in the face.
@@raygun26 yeah mr. raygun xD
Like coffee
@@chrisstarr4523 that was an awesome scene!
@@chrisstarr4523 Funny thing is, had Gale showed the coffee thing to Gus they both would capitalize heavily on it lol
What a smart man! I see life-altering opportunities knocking on his door real soon! He could have a real shot so long as he keeps his mind open.
He got his shot lol, provided by Jessie
@@OverhemdThat's the joke, smartie.
Oh he got his shot alright just not the one he was expecting it really took him by surprise
Clever 😂😂
why are better call saul and sopranos comments so top-tier compared to the drek everywhere else on youtube
I hate how innocent he sounds singing that song. He knew what he was getting into tho.
As the BB went to show though, he was extremely naive when it came to the drug game. The "innocent" angle fit his characterization quite well.
Yeah producing mass quantities of poison? Not innocent at all. I wonder why such a brillant man would choose such a thing.
Exactly. He just didn’t think he would ever have to directly deal with the dark underbelly of that business.
He probably told himself that he's just making the drug so he doesn't hurt anyone.
No he didn't lol. He knew a very tiny sliver of what he was entering.
Vince is genius showing that regardless of your personality being criminal has it’s consequences. Like mike said to pryce: “You might not be the bad guy, but you’re a criminal”
Wish people realized this in society. I'd wager every adult has broken some law, but people convince themselves that 'it doesn't count', or that they are somehow different, or that it's ok for them to pick and choose laws to follow...
People break laws, but it's the ones who refuse to acknowledge it that are insufferable imo.
Particularly relevant considering that this is the season with Werner Ziegler.
@@cometmoon4485 I think Werner like Gale simply didn't realize how dangerous the game itself was, he treated it like it was normal contract work like he could just "take some time off" and explain it away to his boss later. If he had seen how people get shot etc and knew half of what Walt knew its likely Werner would have been smart enough not to pull anything stupid
@@DTheCritical Yes exactly, people conveniently ignore how they blatantly shielded and withheld information from those workers. They knew it was shady, they had no clue it was for a mass cartel funded drug business
@@DTheCritical I'm not 100% sure it would have mattered in Werner's case, he came across as being unaware of the risks, but given the specification of what he and his team were working on, he should have understood the risk - The fact that they had to do everything in complete secret should have been a big hint of how illegal it was
Gus smiled to himself while seeing Gale singing. He didn't have to, Gale couldn't see it, but he still did. Shows that Gus actually appreciated Gale's innoncence. It was probably uplifting to have a contact with someone who's not a shady criminal, but a genuine person. Even tho he was assisting with the crime.
Plus it is kind of adorable how much joy he got out of chemistry, I feel like Walt once loved it that much too until it just became his job.
Regardless of what his does he appreciates politeness
I believe he smiled because Gale reminded him of his friend Maximino "Max" Arciniega, who was also a chemist. Gus´s best friend and original partner that got killed by Hector Salamanca.
I agree. I feel like Gus genuinely liked Gale. He knew he couldn’t kill Walt as retribution, so he took it out on one of his goons in breaking bad. Gus is cool and calculating, but he has those moments like anyone else.
Because gale reminds gus of his lover and chemist that salamanca killed. Hes brilliant and not ruthless like gus
The funny thing is, he is testing cartel drugs and mentions at 1:57 that they need to clean their cookware as it introduces contaminants. When Jesse does his cook at the cartel factory, he mentions how filthy everything is, and that they need to scrub everything first.
Yes, that was the point...
Yes! This scene also retcons Gus’s smug/proud look when Jesse says “we’re gonna start by cleaning every surface.”
Jesse’s instinct, after learning from Walter, was the same as a trained chemist.
He wanted to be in the game and unfortunately he paid the price
I'm not so sure he ever really knew what "the game" was. That's part of what cost him his life.
@@cheaplaffsarefreeyep, got in over his head.
He should've learnt real skillz from Pryce.
I don't think Gale fully understood who Gus was, he knows he's a drug dealer but most likely was shielded from most of the horror that comes with that - To Gale, Gus was just a mentor that he wanted to impress and one day opened his door and got shot in the head, as innocent in his last moments as he was here.
He was pretty intelligent though. I don’t think he was completely innocent so much as he thought he would be shielded from the dirty side of the business. It did take him by surprise, but not because he thought it didn’t happen, but because he thought it wouldn’t happen to him. He thought he was higher up than he really was.
0:30 Am I the only one or Gus actually seems having a genuine smile seeing Gale being so passionate about chemistry?
One of the few people he actually likes
I was going to say the same thing. He has probably known Gale for years, ever since he granted him a scholarship. Gale's experiments probably remind him of when he met Max, too. And Gale is just genuinely a pleasant person to be around, ten times so if you are usually surrounded by Salamanca psychopaths
He was the same way with Walt when he showed him the lab for the first time. Think he has a genuine interest sometimes
Made him remember of his dead partener
He’s thinking about topping him
I have to wonder how long actor David Costabile practiced the Tom Lehrer song or if he was enough of a nerd the whole time that he already knew it by heart.
I mean he's an actor, his job is to remember words
@@nonGigihis job is to make you forget he's acting.
There’s always a chance the script was sitting on the table out of sight and he was reading it
@@bobby_hill8357 yeah. Yet you have to memorize lines lol
@@nonGigi Obviously, that's a given, but a trained parrot can memorize lines. You understate the talent it takes to be a good actor by reducing it down to simply remembering words. That was the point.
Meant for better things? Yeah, like making Walter White his coffee every morning.
love that contamination plays a bug role in getting the purity rates high (walt spent so much effort getting it right “fly” )
Avoiding contamination was enough to get it to 96%. Achieving Walt's 99.1% took actual skill and understanding of the chemistry.
The fly was also symbolic of Walt.
While he can clean up the lab as much as he likes. The dirty is actually him and his environment.
I'm pretty sure just getting rid of contamination won't get it to 96% , it would probably get it to Todd's cooks which were 80-85% , but gale was by himself a brilliant chemist too who took his skills to get it to 96% but then... Walter white is another beast himself , he's equivalent to a nobel winner whereas gale probably is in the grand scheme of things an above average level chemist who is probably the best in his state AT BEST , white was oneof the greatest minds in the world probably@@nahor88
I feel like a part of Gus genuinely cared about Gale as a friend.
He also was good enough at putting on a facade that any on-the-surface care for gale could just be pretending
@SynkGD I think a lot of it is a facade, but part of it is genuine. Remember that Gus is still human and deep down he wants human connection, but he's surrounded by murderers and criminals. He also fears getting too close to people because he's scared that he will lose them like with Max.
@@SynkGD He smiles to himself as he enters the room and sees Gale. Gale cannot see that expression so that smile had to be genuine because otherwise he has no reason for it. Gus did care and no wonder why, Gale is innoncent. He is loyal, friendly and innoncent. Something Gus had in Max, who he lost long time ago and was living among the shady criminals ever since. I would argue that he had zero reason to NOT like Gale. His presence is just uplifting for someone who spends most of his time in the world of murderers and psychopaths.
It's kind of hard to tell who he genuinely cared and liked besides Max. In the flashback Gus looked innocent.
After it he was just a psychopath.
He likes him as more than a friend
You can clearly see that Gus was expecting Gale to give himself, and that's why he became just the right man for the job. (Just the right man.)
I wish they did a spinoff on how Gus truly built his empire after Don eladio killed his partner. Would be cool to see Gus building the brand and cameos of younger characters making their start in the organization
You do see the problem with that, tho?
can you say this louder?
I hope your stupid wish never becomes real 🤦♂️ ruining the entire mystery and mystic nature of Gus like Hank said before ‘86 this guy went ghost his whole nature is dark and unknown that’s the definition of Gus Fring
instead we got slipping jimmy
maybe but I don't want another prequel. Vince needs to move on to other projects
What's super interesting is Gus told the DEA that he was super talented and had a bright future but was more interested in taking shortcuts. I thought he was just trying 2 make the cover story more viable, but he actually wasn't even lying when he said that
"You were meant for better things... like getting shot in the face by a rival chemist."
In an alternate universe, Lyle and Gale became the most powerful combination: Lyle handling the business side and Gale handling the production side.
Who is Lyle?
@@udaysingh-wr2kwhe is the untouchable puppet master of gus
There is simply no other show that delights itself in the process of things and excels in allowing time for us to see two people talking to each other with the most excellent simple but great dialogue.

What?
@@amanwithnoname-ds6ep he is saying that Gale is singing the elements song because he is trying to take his mind off of the recent Iraq invasion
@@NewWesternFrontwhat?
@@NewWesternFronthelpful! Appreciate you!
Idiots asking "what?", apparently don't get this is set in the past (before 2009) and likely 2003-04ish.
Was Gus being sincere with for better things or was he just manipulating and saving him for later use? I always liked Gus but really never understood his intentions were good or selfish
A little bit of both, I think. Gus seems to actually take pleasure in choosing the right people for a job and rewarding them when they do well. Ultimately it's all for his goals, but I think he genuinely considered his plans for Gale "better things." He knew Gale would be happy, and would therefore be loyal and do a good job.
Fring might not always have good intentions for people but he generally doesn't have bad ones without reason. If someone is useful to him, he tends to treat them as valuable until they no longer serve his purposes but, even then, he's pragmatic about his goals. He likely would have let Gale work for him for as long as Gale could produce & wasn't a liability & treated Gale with respect & support to foster loyalty. That said, I don't think Fring would have had any trouble having Gale killed if he needed to for some practical reason.
The answer to your question is yes. Even in his answer, he said not yet, but he did have better things in mind.
He meant the super lab when he said better things.
I mean he seemed genuine in letting walter cook for 3 months for a couple million 🤷🏾
the fact that gus didnt even seem to want to put gale in the position of cook in the first place makes his death so much sadder. gale was just an innocent guy who liked chemistry a bit too much so he dabbled in the less than legal side of it.
Gale didn't deserve to die
That's what his killer was always thinking
He was in the Game and he was as bad of a criminal as Walter
Once he made the choice to replace Walter he had to go.
@@Wolf-wc1js-Well not quite as bad as Walter but yes he wasn't innocent.
he was just a libertarian
I have to agree.
That thumbnail was the best frame to use!
RIP to the person on the show that had to go on Reddit to find that song.
In a better world, Gus worked with Gale and everything went smoothly
In a better world Walt would be his professor or hire him to work for Gray Matter
For Gale it’s not about drugs. It’s about chemistry - he loves chemistry.
Gus Fring brings thrilling feeling to next level in breaking bad such a great actor, calm and composed villain with a terrifying nature 😢❤
I watched this again after 4 years from binging the first viewing. Creeped me out and rang my bell even the second time watching Breaking Bad.
Hmm
1:58 this comment from gale is what made Gus feel proud of Jesse when he scolded the cartel to clean their cookware in Mexico.
And now, the elements of the periodic table..., brought to you by Gale Boetticher
Whoa didn't expect to see you here, much less such a fresh comment. I watched all your Mario Kart DLC speculation videos as each wave was being developed and really enjoyed them!
I guess their chemistry is much bigger than the periodic table 😂
The only actor who actually looked younger in Better Call Saul.
Hmm
Good to see Daniel Hardman working hard, after being ousted from Pearson Hardman.
That's bullshit and you know it
What I always wonder is that Gus planned from a start that Don Eladio will find out about his lab right? So he will have chance to kill him. Maybe he was really hesitant to let Gale be part of operation, because he thought he couldn't play the part when time comes?
Interesting that despite how generous and supportive Gus is with Gale, Gale always calls him Mr. Fring and never Gus.
Good point. It makes the Walter/Jesse parallels all the stronger...
This scene really shows the care Gus puts into his selected people.
The loss of Gale was HUGE blow to him. Not just his ego, from losing a hand picked cool, but because he knew the promise Gale had
Reminds me of Mordin Solus from Mass Effect with that singing.
what happens when you run out of scenes for the channel
He really wanted to take a shot at this 😢 showed right on his face

His death was the worst. He was brilliant and had a genuine curiosity. It wasn’t all money with him.
It's also sad that Walt used to be like Gale. He was just as passionate about chemistry, but the falling out with G&E made him cynical.

I feel like that is a little too on the nose though personally. Like when TV shows introduce characters that are gamers and literally live in their mother's basement. It's like some writer who has no knowledge of a subject wants to make someone seem like a nerd and they can't conceptualize the fact that nerds are just ordinary people so they have to give them something really weird and quirky that they might be ridiculed for.
