  • A generation of young Italians are rediscovering the grand tradition of “Made in Italy”, ditching international careers and expensive studies. Is the return to their roots more than just a hipster phase?

    “Yes, I kind of like the fact that now I’m making concrete products", says Guido Pallini, a London banker turned Tuscan farmer. "Before I was selling contracts and ideas, and a lot of hot air." But now, if he's not herding his buffalo on horseback, Guido spends his time perfecting new varieties of cheese on a farm that belonged to his retired father. "I see also my friends that went away to live in London, after 10 years they're all coming back", says Guido's sister Matidia. The trend seems set to continue, and with youth unemployment still at 35%, half of the 125,000 Italians leaving the country last year were young people. Yet for these law-students-turned-farmers and psychologists-turned-shoemakers, the future for a generation of educated Italians is back where they started, at home.

    I am an Indian student studying in Camerino,Italy.I would say the zeal and happiness these people carry no one can do it.Its always positive to be around them.It is sad that the country is not doing well financially but Italy has so much history and culture that this generation can exploit it completely to reach the top....slowly and steadily.

    Fabulous to see young intelligent educated young people taking up the challenge of a life change returning to their roots inventive hardworking . And the most important ,quality of life, proud of their heritage. I wish them every success . A breath of fresh air after following politics. Corruption and dreadful people doing dreadful things to this planet for wealth and power.

      Honorable Creed, your comments and the the appended feedback information are the most important to us. Specially when we have similar views on the addressed subject on the "Mother Nature" and Agro-Economy. I remained for some time in Trieste, Italy purposing for Studying Physics at the ICTP and generally the Italian Cultural Evolution in the region. Both the subjects inherit quality of lives and livings for Mankind. Later I have lived for many years in Germany too as a DAAD-Follow on a Federal German Governmental Scholarship Award. To me the most important things inherits in the European Culture are the dignity of work and the source believes in God as our Lord for all the Mankind and quality of life. We hope next to have a living and loving earth with the "High Creed Culture and the Mother Nature".

    • @imurt3417
      @imurt3417 Před 3 lety

      @Sleipner 33 dude, the original comment said that the label "Made in Italy" brings with itself a big weight for the buyers, that's it. And, for the average buyer, that's true in some niches like food and fashion, even if the average italian product is of mediocre quality. Talk with the average Joe in North America (and also central Europe according to my experience) for example, and ask him if he would buy a bottle of olive oil made in Spain or made in Italy. I noticed that the majority would buy the italian oil, even if, generally speaking, is of lower quality (at least I think so) because people think about Italy as this mythical place where everyone dresses well and all the food is good. Those two things, fame and quality, don't necessarily go hand in hand and that's the case for the cheap italian foods that you find in the supermarket.
      What you said is more or less true, but you can't expect to have a serious conversation about a topic if the first comment of yours looks like that. That's not an opening to a more serious and well put discussion, that's just a rant. How'd you expect something serious after such a start? Even if you are saying the truth, which, more or less, you are, that sounded a lot like someone crying, hence the comment.

      I spent a few days in Venice and loved it so. Recently I saw video of Venice and it broke my heart.

    actually i’m from *CENTER* (yes it exist) Italy and i want to explain things a little bit to foreigners... italy is actually divided in three not in two as a common belief:
    - *the north:* rich and industrialized part, clean where people are acculturated and they respect rules (northern italians share similarities with france or northern europe actually, in fact there is also a colder weather and the italian alps in border with austria and france and switzerland, the mentality is very similar and the richness in general) and the most two iconic cities are Milan (the most industrialized and rich city in Italy) and Venice, Turin, Genoa, Bologna
    - *the center:* not too different from the north in terms of richness and development and culture, but less industrialized and less organized and the people are more welcoming and warm and chatty, iconic cities like Rome (capital) and Florence are in the center, but also Sardinia. Us from the center are very neutral about this diaspora between north and south and i think we are the true italians here... also because we didn’t have many invasions by foreign civilizations during history because the center italy has always been under the Papal State (Vatican) for a lot, and still is, so it remained latin (roman, as romans were originated by latins and spoke latin)
    - *the south:* the most poor and undeveloped part, where mafia rules the most (and also where mafia is born) and that’s why many southern italians emigrate. You don’t see many emigration coming from center/north italians, and i explained why, and i have to add that it’s also the part where the ugliest dialects come from basically people are not well instructed in my opinion so they don’t put the effort to talk in standard italian and they prefer to use their dialects (the ones popular in mafia families for americans basically SUPERMARIO LOL) but again their dialects are ugly honestly... italian is a romance language, melodic and sweet is the language of music, opera...so it really sucks that there is (especially in USA) this stereotype that italians talk like supermario or like mafia bosses. This is true for the southern italians as i explained, in the center/north people talk standard italian and less dialects with a proper accent. If you hear standard italian is completely different from the dialects spoken in south of italy especially, and southern italians in general even when they talk standard italian they have (sorry) really bad accents😂But also i think the south is the most gorgeous and iconic part of Italy (Amalfi coast, Capri, Naples, Sicily, Positano, ecc)
    Us from the center as i said want truly a united Italy, but Italy is veeeery divided not only from north to center to south but also from region to region! The fact is that Italy unified very late on the contrary of other european countries, in 1861, and before it was divided in different regions who talked different dialects and had different cultures basically... a BIG MESS! Italy is my home, a gorgeous country full of history and culture and art, marvelous places, food and warm people.. so we have to unite from north to south! 🇮🇹🕊

      Ismael Anibal Maillo Melchor : Not everything needs to be judged purely on the fiscal paradigm; there is a broader perspective. The organic farming brothers are living a healthy hard working life. Who knows, the lawyer could have ended up defending all kinds of crooks enabling them to 'get away with it'; when in fact there is no getting away with anything - this is the law of life ! The young woman making quality shoes is using her innate talents to give pleasure to others. All are creating value in some unique way that cannot be easily be quantified via the short sighted lens of viewing work, or creation, based on monetary gain. Each are winning in their own way. Are you ?
      Non tutto deve essere giudicato puramente su un paradigma fiscale; c'è una prospettiva più ampia. I fratelli dell'agricoltura biologica vivono una vita lavorativa salutare. Chissà, l'avvocato avrebbe potuto finire per difendere tutti i tipi di truffatori che permettessero loro di "farla franca"; quando in realtà non c'è nulla da fare - questa è la legge della vita! La giovane donna che produce scarpe di qualità usa i suoi talenti innati per dare piacere agli altri. Tutti stanno creando valore in un modo unico che non può essere facilmente quantificato attraverso la lente miope del lavoro di osservazione, o creazione, basata sul guadagno monetario. Ognuno sta vincendo a modo suo. Tu sei ?

    "Embracing the tradition...."
    That's the storytelling you pretend to impose about Italy, that's the point, I believe.
    Never, I mean never talking about how many good researchers, scientists, (In A.I, for example or in the aerospace industry) or astronauts we have ( the Sicilian Luca Parmitano is the actual international space station's commander)
    No.......just Mozzarella, Shoes and Opera.
    Well my friends, like it or not, the word "Science" comes from the Latin "Scientia" which doesn't mean simply "knowledge" it means literally "Science". Get over it.

    As they say you cannot have everything at once. You have Tuscany with a spectacular scenery and good weather (relatively), but you have to deal with the government you have and all of its bureaucracy. That basically is like throwing broken glass on the sidewalk as you walk barefoot. It's a slow and painful walk, but at least you're not in awful weather UK. Hope they're all very successful. And, btw, I see Hamish dating Guido.

    Few small businesses in some niche semi-luxury markets in which "made in Italy" matters, such as custom designed shoes or organic cheese and so on, might or might not succeed, but that will never change the gigantic tectonics of globalized economy. like it or not, it can not.

    • @67claudius
      @67claudius Před 5 lety

      Globalization also means huge markets, like China or India, which have millions of rich people who love luxury products made in Italy, this is why Italian exports enjoy excellent health.

      You miss the point. Te whole economy is crumbling and these few small businesses, even if they would succed, can't change the fact the italian economy is not good at all nor the expectations of growth nor some serious and very difficult to fix problems like the old and fast-aging population. Actually is a problem in pretty much all the world western world, but in some countries like Italy this probelm is much bigger.
