    In this video I repair and restore a rare video game console called the SuperGRAFX. This console was a market failure, but that’s what makes it so interesting. This is an extremely thorough restoration that took over 8 hours to complete. Once I’m done with refurbishing the console, it’s better than new!

    One piece of criticism/advice on the refurb: Please, please file off a bit of the plastic peg in the centre of the console. Over time it pushes on the PCB and will produce cracks over time. It is absolutely not needed in holding the console together and no SGX refurbishment should be complete without. You'll thank me later :P
    I did mine a few years ago and it still works amazing as my main PCE system :D

    • @Mave-rick
      @Mave-rick Před 4 měsíci +2

      I did that to mine when I saw @SmokeMonster tweet about it in 2018. You don't even need to cut the whole peg off, I filed it down half way and it was enough for it to no longer reach the PCB. ✌

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 Před 4 měsíci +3

      I saw the warning back when it first started circulating (thanks, Smoke!) but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I had my SGX so long and baby it when taking it out of the box but it feels like a tank. It looks brand new, even at the “problem” area, and has no pressure there at all. I can’t even see how it’s possible to put enough pressure there deliberately since there is no flex in this thing and the top is not flat. I almost feel like what happened to him (and maybe one other?) was some kind of fluke.

    • @humanwaveform

      temperature is a huge factor in the life of electronics. Things expand and contract depending on temperature. This can cause the plastic housing to shift over time. I’m guessing yours has been kept pretty temperature stable over the years? @@emmettturner9452

    • @TurboXray
      @TurboXray Před 4 měsíci +9

      @@emmettturner9452Exactly this. Not a single "mechanical engineer" or anyone in that background with professional experience has backed up this claim haha. For that matter, no one has done any pressure or flex tests. Someone in the modding community cried the sky is falling, and it spread through out the retro community. Someone showed a cracked PCB.. yeah, if you place heavy crap or drop heavy crap on the system bad stuff is going to happen haha.
      The support is there for the downward pressure when putting in a hucard. Without it, the board WILL flex. the PCB is NOT supposed to dynamically flex like that (i.e. the absence of the standoff). There's no "constant pressure" being applied to the board. I have 3 SGX systems, and one from when I got it 1993.. this was never an issue and still isn't an issue. This is just people parroting some modder that incorrectly made the assumption that it causes damage over time. I even saw one guy trying to claim a golf-ball sized hole at the top of the SGX case was to blame for the standoff support!!! When clearly some dumbass clearly dropped a hammer or something on it haha.
      It's 2024 and people are still telling people to remove the standoff. I mean if they're THAT paranoid.. then check the clearance and shave a few thousandths off it.. but don't remove it! Without it, there's no support in the middle of the board where you insert the hucard.. and THAT could potentially cause damage over time because now it flexes. I swear, people will parrot anything from people that aren't qualified to make assessments.

      @@TurboXraySmokeMonster's is the only case Ive ever seen Cracked like that and IMO there is no way that happened with normal use. I think at some point that console was dropped or something dropped on it heavy enough with enough force in the center it cracked the board. My personal machine is fine but out of precaution I snipped the post off and also run a Super SD System 3 on it rarely using the Hu Card slot anyway. If I did it'd be with an Everdrive. I use a TG16 as my daily anyway. The SGFX is too special to daily. Still, I don't see this as a Sky is Falling issue like many others do.

    Fun fact: the HuC6280A not only contains the CPU, but it also has a sound generator. 6 channels of wavetable synthesis and the last two channel can produce white noise. The "A" signifies a newer revision of the chip, which is supposed to fix the audible click that happened when switching wavetables on the original HuC6280.

    I finished the complete refurbish of my £4 Xbox One Phat today, absolutely pristine inside and out and just been Forza'ing about this evening on FH5, first real console rebuild since I modded my Gamecube. Now to strip my Switch down to repair the dock filters and all golden gravy :)

    Regarding the sticker on the bottom. I have actually put mine into the dishwasher for 3 hours and the only thing happening to the sticker was that it became a little brighter shade of white. Surprisingly resilient little sicker.

    I had one, back in the days in order to connect to the CD-ROM unit you needed a special adaptor with cable to plug into the back, awkward but did the trick, too bad NO Super Graphics CDROM games were ever made, this also reminds me of the PCE Shuttle ;)

    Any need for paste on the voltage regulator? Also I worry about the bond of the upside down din to adapter plate with repeated use. I used some paste flux to try and get a stonger bond on mine.
    I love my Turbonanza on my TG-16 followed the video you made for it. Easy to follow and worked flawlessly. Thank you!

    • @MachoNachoProductions
      @MachoNachoProductions  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I’ve thought about putting some thermal paste on the regulator to the heat sink but it’s not necessary. I actually think I may just do it though 😅. I think the bond for the new din connector is pretty strong but agree it’s not as strong as a through hole design. Just definitely be careful when plugging in the ab cable. So glad you found the turbonaza video helpful 🙏 cheers dude!

    • @THELEGENDARYK2
      @THELEGENDARYK2 Před 4 měsíci

      @MachoNachoProductions its probably not super necessary. but I used MG Chemicals 860 Silicone Heat Transfer Compound on mine and Ive been using the same bottle of it for a few years with no issues. It was recommended by a vintage AV repair channel I watch.

      Hey! I did just recently change my setup and really love the new station! I was actually perfectly happy with my prior setup but unfortunate my old station didn’t support hot tweezers. The new FX-972 supports hot tweezers which I think will be useful and make some future mods/repairs easier. Cheers!

      @@MachoNachoProductions Oh rad! Good to know! I bought a cheaper set of hot tweezers awhile back, and I'm not as impressed with them!

    Use the fiberglass pen for finishing up when you remove solder mask (scrape the bulk off with something else). Goes a lot quicker, wastes less of its fiberglass material, and isn’t going to damage the surrounding traces when the ones you are targeting are already mostly eat. You’d be surprised by how much more effective the fiberglass pen is at removing solder mask even with a few scrapes from a screwdriver. After going through my first fiberglass pen much too quickly many years ago, I began doing it this way and now I’m barely start going through my fiberglass refill.
    I typically use a selection of drill bits, screwdrivers, razor blades, hobby knives, and metal spudgers before the fiberglass pen. It ends up being faster and cleaner with more control.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 Před 4 měsíci

      Oh yeah: I use a pick to scribe the perimeter too. Sometimes it’s all I use the break up the solder mask before bringing out the fiberglass pen. It just looks like a few scrapes in the mask but even breaking it up a little before breaking out the glass pen works great!
