- Dassi prófar glussadrifið í bílnum hans Halldórs. Þetta bara svínvirkar. David in the Icelandic Land Rover owners club, tries the hydraulic powered lo gear. In this video, the Defender is in neutral gear, and no clutch is used. Engine is in idle, just controlled with Halldors patented hydraulic system.
It's a hydro rotor driven by a belt driven pump. It attaches to the T-case and inputs power in PTO. Instead of using the PTO to power an attachment, the PTO gets used to input the power from the hydro rotor.
I always thought Defenders were the world's best but I didn't know they could do this!
not boring for a 4x4 enthusiast..actually packed with excitement.. ;)
Good axle articulation. Love the way it was climbing at tick over.
I am so glad to see a video of this thing, I have seen it in Land Rover Magazines! That thing is so cool!!!
Sounds like the motor never went over idle speed. Awesome!
incredible how it just idled over the step.
Thank you CZcams recommendations 🙏🙏
We will need cars like this soon. With the continuing amount of pot holes we have in the UK! councils are pathetic, dunno why we pay council tax for. Stupid a holes!
buy a icelandic off roader
I drive a lowered cibic, make it a habit to avoid potholes and it becomes real easy. I don't even have to think about it, got Koni shockz up front and that helps with quick steering.
+gary63693 you are not in lincolnshire are you ...i have to give way to potholes in my disco..and drive on the right on one 1/2 mile stretch
gary63693 fucken tell me about mate we are on same page as our council use taxes $ on sum thinks else hear NZ it sucks doggie pot hole
That was pretty cool. Nice truck.
That was awesome
I don't get the how that vehicle is powered by hydraulics but it seems like it's easier and smoother to bring the power on, guessing that helps with traction in bad spots, awesome vid!
Lovely climbing on idle.
@my86samurai No gears, the engine is not powering directly the wheels via it natural transmission, instead, the diff's are hydraulic powered, if you notice, he doesn't accelerate, the engine just powers the hydraulic pump. this is only used in severe off road conditions and rock climbing.
Pretty Sick. Those are some huge tyres
Damn.. Smooth like vanilla! I really would like to try some offroading in Iceland.
That is nice. Hydraulic powered first gear.
The best car in the world
Defender I like it
Strong car in the desart and all plase
From :
Ahmed
United Arab emirates
Dubai
And thank you fore this movie
nice one like to use the defender in one of our trips and see how she goes ;-)
That things got some serious low end!
loved it... great car
wat a machine i luv it........these viking trucks are the best in the world no doubt
third : What kind of torque does it lay down on the ground at the wheels ?
fourth : How fast can you go ( ie: top speed ) ?
fifth : Do you use different controls for each wheel ? So that way you can drive it as a 2
wheel drive on the street ?
That was beautiful to watch.
that thing's just iddleing, love it!
@EATSLEEPDRIVE2002 It uses hydraulic fluid to rotate the wheels instead of a direct connection between the engine and wheels. Tractors use this same method. Its good for slow crawls with immense power. Its still a gasoline engine.
the fact it clearly says TDI on the side, should set alarm bells ringing that it doesnt have antistall.
this landrover is running a hydraulic system to give low speed / high torque
You drive up on the Icelandic glaciers. That's where these tires come in real handy.
I think im in love lol........now thats some low gears. very nice indeed.
Doesn't matter....I was pretty fun to watch.
This guy's got control.
that car looks small on those wheels and that's a big car! :) nice vid
Very nice truck love her nice one
Cool. Could have done with that the other day when I got blocked in Aldi's car park.
mannnn what a nice 4X4!!! bloody slow crawl too, wd.
that´s how you do it, no over revs, just easy!
CZcams never fails to disappoint.
"i just driver over your house? Oh sorry, didn't feel a thing"
That thing is tough as hell looking.
@Inklebonker1 I completely agree that being light weight is not always the best, I was just challenging the belief that all HMMWV's were heavier than H1's
That was really good.
@Inklebonker1 Originally they weren't. They are only heavy now because they turned them into armored vehicles. That was not their original function. Unarmored versions can weigh under, sometimes well under, 6,000#'s
@justin76bmw it is true about them being too wide
I live in South Africa and the Old H1 has major issues working properly here
The reason for that is that most of the off road sections have been made by the old Land rovers and Land cruisers
The Humvee is too wide to run in their tracks which means that it always have to forge it’s own road
And when you have trees growing on both sides of the road (or huge rocks, cliffs of whatever)then you have a problem
It works fine in open grass or deserts
@ruuman you can have a pto that engages like a air cond. pump tow truck has one and it works pretty good
38s on 10 inch rims. i love it.
@l337pwnage Keep in mind though weight isn't always that pressing with ofroad vehicles for instance trophy trucks weigh from 6-9,000 lbs yet move through the desert at speeds exceeding 120mph. It just depends on the function and i think the h1 covers every ofroad category in such a way to make it the best off road vehicle ever made.
Very nice... Idled over that
@tunespt Halleluja! Im a Jeep guy, but no bullshit.. The Defender is a really good offroader straight from the factory.
Well Done. Awsome.
jeez it's like watching grass grow
@Deepinher01 well if you knew anything about off road driving in Iceland then you'd know they need huge tyres to overcome the deep snowdrifts and massive glaciers encountered when traversing an island with very few paved roads
@TheCheshireCowboy Here in America, we need those huge tires to overcome the deep mud pits and massive rocks encountered when we get drunk and try to show off to our buddies.
nice ,clear and cool !! good
its more fun to go over it
@islandoffroadracing I'm guessing you mean a hydraulic pump with a magnetic clutch for belt drive from the engine?
When I say PTO, on a defender the transfer box has a dedicated point to run all sorts of tools and such directly from the gearbox, just like a tractor. I for example run my hydro pump for my winches from this point. I think this guy has a hydro pump setup like you describe and a hydro motor where I have my pump.
@mcake1234 Slow powerful crawls. Spinning the tires is a loss of traction. Keep them moving at an extremely slow pace and they can bite terrain.
This has got to be an iceland rig
Nice and slow is the best way to get up
bello!! it's a very very powered
@justin76bmw I agree they are very capable
as long as there is space for them to fit through
That was great.
the guy in the disco 2 watching is telling his girlfriend "i could do that if i wanted to."
nice video
@SuperRudy94 They're legal for road, motorway and offroad (naturally) over here. But that might not apply in other countries...
@Venefiga i had to drive them in the army, they are pretty badass, but i'd take my suzuki samurai with 31's and lockers.any day. its a 4wheeler with heat, a radio, and you dont get covered in mud.
Amazing. Basically, if you can get a tire on something, it will crawl over it.
do like the way its just done on tick over
@TheRobertB wow i never thought i would see a jeep person talk shit. then again how can they when i roll in and 66 bronco! the BEST 4x4/crawler classic broncos hands down!
that thing need to be lifted a bit more so that the tires wont rub as much on the fenders when the axle flexes like that
It is not rubbing
It was modified by professionals, if they say that is good it is good
not rubbing you idiot
i have a feeling that a hydraulic system would have capabilities well in excess of that seeing as there are bottle jacks that can lift 125,000+ lbs with one jack
@justin76bmw Actually, I think you are correct in your first assumption. I was being a bit facetious with my comment. ;) I think they are running some special system. You could make a hydraulic system that could travel at speed of 50 mph or more. Really, the only speed limit would be your flow, pressure, and ability to cool the oil.
However, an automatic transmission with 2 or 3 transfer cases stacked(its been done) has gearing low enough to basically do what he just did.
@autahi49 I'm imagining he has an engine driven pump, with a hydro motor on the PTO plate on a dog clutch. Then he engages the dog and either manually holds down the clutch pedal or has a line lock to permanently disengage the clutch when in hydro drive. cool thing is that would work in high and low, 10speed hydro drive, wonder how fast it can go in hydro mode?
it can be done by most of 4x4 trucks of the world with big tires... not just because it's a defender!
It looks like it can fucking swim with those tires
nice ride.....i want it!!
Just awesome
@esc634They are available to civilians, not made for. And the adjustable ride height system is not a staple to all Humvees, actually I'm pretty sure that's an add-on. Keep representing The US with name calling
THAT is cool! That's why hydraulics power so many types of equipment. Why not a Defender?
@Deepinher01 This is not about being cool, this is about having a vehicle that is usable in the extreme terrain here in Iceland. Just take a look at some other videos from our gorgeous countryside.
@DeaD100500 actually defender is a land rover model, british
that mans driving on balloonms
nothing against defenders, infact the d110 is one of my favorite off-road vehicles, but the h1 could do this stock. you cant compare these two vehicles one costing almost twice the amount of the other. i like the h1 because in the off-road world it defies logic having independent suspension and absolutely no articulation but still makes it over almost anything. don't believe me look up some illegal wheeling vids.
Sick defender by the way
They use them to drive on top of the snow, like where it has not been plowed, and where there was no road to begin with like on top of glaciers. If they tried that with narrow tires they would sink and be stuck instantly...
That might actually work as a boat, just get paddle tred onto those balloons
Yes, very good. But my little Deawoo Matiz does 45+ to the gallon. When we come to an obstacle like that we just get out and lift it over!
wow
look at those tires
it's a "Landy", it's what they do !!
Whats the benefit of this over, say.. a typical hydraulic automatic transmission?
where can i get more info about this Halldors hydraulic system?
you must be from somewhere where sarcasm doesnt exist
CZcams really needs to come up with some way of adding a description to videos.
That think can probably float on water with those tires!
I knew Godzilla had an ilegitimate son
@2004SUBARUWRX Land Rover. The one and only
need those wheels for my miata ... would be amphibious :)
it explains it in the description, you can obviously write, why not give reading a shot?
ok I have a few questions
first : If it is hydraulics turning the wheels and tires then why do you need axels with rearends
why not just use straight axels ? That way you dont have the pumpkin in the way so you
can have a few more inches of clearance .
second : Also I guess that this means you really dont even need a transfer case or even a
transmission as far as that goes ? All you would need is the engine to drive the
pump ?
0:44 sounded nice
Það er alveg kjánalegt að horfa á þetta! :)
Like those Tundra Tyres from CAN/Alaska
