I don't know if J-Dawg has ever acknowledged this, but part of the reason bands like Frozen Soul and 200 Stab Wounds have gotten popular and seem to have clueless fans is because they also appeal to the hardcore fanbase. Check out "By the Hands of the Devil" by Satan’s Host.
It's got Extreme Metal elements but they have Harry Conklin of Jag Panzer (great US Power Metal band) on vocals and it gives the whole thing a really unique vibe.

Dawg knows this instinctively but has not articulated it well: death metal is inseparable from horror. If you separate it from horror, like the tech bands that do science fiction imagery and lyrics, it turns into something else, and you have just loaded a cooler of Natty Light into your canoe for a tour straight off Death Metal Island. It follows then that two of the first death metal albums are the Exorcist and Evil Dead movie soundtracks.
