I like this kind of side by side review based on use cases. This helps to clarify the options for consumers into something more meaningful. Thanks
Two suggestions for review: Kingston Fury Renegade and Corsair MP700.
The WD Black SN850X line is conspicuously missing here. Otherwise, thanks for the tests and results.
Unfortunately they are often overlooked. I have used them for the past few years and never had a single issue.
WD SN850X
yeah esp seeing it trades blows with the 990 pro in being the best gen 4 drive. Random speeds samsung is a bit faster but pc mag benches program, games and windows load times and the sn850x best the 990 pro across the board. I'd bet it's because the sn850x uses really fast dram cache, it literally uses straight ddr4 3200, while the samsung uses lpddr which has half the memory bus and multiple times worse latency even if it is clocked slightly higher iirc.
lp of lpddr is low power, hence the clocking.
KC3000 owner is here! So happy with it so far.
Worth the price!
@utub.watcher I threw it away immediately. Thank you.
Back in the 80s we would buy discs for our Commodore 64 games, they were 5 1/4” floppy discs from Verbatim. Cool to see them now in the MVME market.
The only thing i've ever bought from Verbatim were CDRW and DVDRW. They were fine i guess.
Not sure i'm willing to trust them for a NVME drives tough...
I'm assuming it's the name only, and probably using someone else's design. They made some decent quality magnetic and optical discs way back in the day.
Using the Solidigm P44 Pro for my main OS in my new rig. It's been AMAZING.
Very curious to see WD SN850X and SK hynix Platinum P41 results!
Solidigm = sk hyinix. The p44 pro and the p41 are the same drive.
@@Frozoken that's interesting but they're priced differently in my country. p44 pro is priced about 50% more than p41 platinum for 1 tb.
I would also like to see the thermals in these kinds of tests in the future as if such drives are also good for constraint spaces without good airflow such as laptops, handheld, and even consoles.
Solidigm P44 Pro should be the most power efficient here based on other reviews.
I use a Corsair force MP600 on my Z390 mb and replaced the stock heatsink with one designed for a gen5 ssd. The benefit to this is most gen3 drives don’t hit the full speed of the of the gen3 m.2 slot but a gen4 drive will while throttling back to maximum gen3 speeds.
I also chose it because it can sustain 666 gigs written before slowing down. And with it going slower than advertised because it’s in a gen3 slot and has a gen5 heatsink, I don’t have to worry about it ever slowing down below maximum gen3 speeds.
Thank you for this!!!! There is so little content doing SSD reviews!
Also with the Solidigm, I've seen from other reviews that the controller can get very hot, which might mean that it's thermal throttling for the consistency test.
it is the perfect time for this video to come out. Thanks a lot for all your tips about pc parts for the creators!
The editing to the music in this video! Top notch! Felt like I was watching Masterchef!
Wow man, you come a long way, was pleasnt to watch, you clrearly put a lot of work in making this video and its showing, the amount of reasearch you done, thank you very much
its really hard to chose an ssd as of today with all the variables that exsits, and you made it very easy and simple in the video
Great video. I was taking notes :) and noticed that while you stated 'cache' as one of the categories you would cover, I didn't ever see a drive list, or bar chart on that specific category. Was this an oversight, or perhaps lumped into one the other groups? Seems like a drive that performs better at caching would be used for everyday access and usage. Great presentation and I like your style. Great job.
I heartily recommend the WD Blacks. Not the cheapest, but they have not failed me so far. I have three in my production machine.
Yes, Samsung and WD are my go-to's for SSDs. But there have been other good ones too.
Best drives but worst endurance unfortunately. Then again I think they both underrate their endurance spec by ~20-30%. At least with the writes of my old 860 evo it should be at 90% endurance but it's still at 93%
I picked up a couple of Solidigm SSDs myself. 1tb and 2tb. Have a Microcenter near my house in Virginia. Both are P44 Pro
The WD_BLACK SN850x is an absolute powerhouse but was left out.
I didn't have any samples :(
Holy Cow, that intro was so smooth! Well deserving of my like and comment!
Fantastic info…very useful. Would love to see benchmarks for Sabrent SSDs…specifically the gen 4 versions.
The two main factors I look for is not just the immediate speeds, but the consistent speeds over time. Does the performance drop off after a while under load, and how much?
Also another major factor in my opinion is general failure rate, because a well performing drive is worth nothing if you have a higher risk of files getting corrupted etc. Especially for long term file storage.
true! Samsung is held rather high regard in the failure rate.
@@theTechNotice Agreed. Been running high end Samsung drives for about 7 years now without a single failure thus far. But I wonder how the competition is stacking up these days.
Yup I've had intel, corsair, sabrent and western D nvme drives that have failed at one time or other - I now have over 20 samsung NVME and sata 6g ssd's (over a period of 5 years) with a zero-failure-count 🧐🧐
My dad tells me that for the affordable price, the best is Transcend. Not the fastest, but one of the longest lasting out there on the market. Sure, u might havent heard them since they're havent done that much marketing.
@@chionyenkwu2253this is good to know thanks! gonna make my first enclosure as a small boot up backup drive.
i am proud of my 990 pro 2tb
I am proud of your 990 pro 2tb too 😺
I have the same drive too and is awesome
@@TRC_WA I just saw the Samsung 990PRO 1TB drive on NEWEGG for rock bottom price!
Got the SK Hynix P41 Platinum with almost the same speeds as 990 pro for HALF THE PRICE
@@Prabhu_njd Seller in China…
The key here for video creation is speed yes but also Dram. You have to see how long it takes and watch the meter to see if it slows down when it writes. You do not want that for video editing or recording.
Hi, great video as always! Well done! I follow you from Italy and I'm writing with google translator, in this video you talk about a configuration for creator and you say that generally you need 4 different ssds, 1) os drive/programs, 2) Project drive, 4) archive/data drive and 3) cache drive. The latter interests me a lot, I've never considered doing a build with a dedicated cache disk, how do you configure it? what do you put on it? for the chace do you manage it from the bios or from a special program or directly from the editing programs? maybe you already have a video explaining it, otherwise I would really like you to make a video dedicated to this! hello and congratulations again!
Any noticeable difference actually using programs and not benchmarking tools? So something like PS, davinci video exporting, 3D software rendering, and so on. Would be nice to see some tests on that, also including some budget options to see how big the difference is if any
Solidigm coming in strong, basically on par with Samsung. Currently have the Firecuda 530. The new 540’s seem insane too.
How is thev530 doing?
I just ordered one and speed / price plus the tbw seemed irresistible lol .
I would like to see a comparison of all the results on the same time and maybe the actual price as well. So i would get a feeling for the overall quality of each ssd and the actual price per value. But this video is very helpful without that too :)
Thanks for an interesting review. What would you recommend for a cache drive?
A very helpful video, ended up going with a Solidigm P44 pro 1TB for my Custom PC's boot drive and a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB for my project drive. Still haven't decided on which drive I want for my long term storage yet though.
I'm really happy with my Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSDs, one 2 TB and another 1TB
Should have included wd sn850x… being the top ps5 drive and a best price option at least as of now. $109 for a 2TB.. might be hard to beat.
As well as a very popular pick the 970 evo plus.. for gen 3.
definitely saving this video for later ...and again thanks for giving awesome contents
My pleasure 😊
Great video. It's a lot of info. Im so new at this. Im hoping to get the fast speed so i could back up more often and make a 2nd back up. It seems like kc3000 is on top of the list.
What's the best recommended enclosure for the kc3000 for 2tb or 4tb?
Great intro on the drive config, Asus ProArt allows for all four drive setup (4 M.2's)! You're the best! Is there a difference between the 1TB and 2TB version of the Solidigm?
Of course , the fast lane cache is 2x of the 1tb version. I wish that all capacities were the same, now it doesn't give you a real comparison.
Been wait for such a comparison 😋
To everyone who still has a Sata Hard drive I implore you to get this NVMe show as a OS drive in this video. You guys will not believe the difference this drive make to general function of your pc, Installing, launching app's or program with little to 0 loading times. NVMe is not restricted by anything except the drive it's self is the only thing that can hold this Boot drive back. When you have "Fast Boot" enabled the time it takes you to put in your lock screen pass code your desk top will already be loaded and waiting. Seriously, it's very very fast Boot device.
true... even basic but solid NVMe gen 3 sneezes circles around SATA, even SSD ones, when used as OS drive.
@@GrimK77 100000000% facts. No bottle necking Sata Cables.
Very informative 👏🏼, thank you
You're so welcome!
I'd love to see the forthcoming PCIe 5.0 M.2's comparisons. I have a 2TB 980 Pro boot and RAID 1 Crucial P3 Plus 4TB. You can have some major changes in the performance once you start filling up these M.2s. So testing at e.g. 33%, 75%, and 85% (full) capacities would be extremely valuable information.
_FYI .. as much as I would love Samsung 980 Pro to come in a "4TB" (chart) version, unfortunately it's capped at 2TB._
TBW chart is badly made.
@@mikakorhonen5715 .. Agreed. 👍
Outstanding! Thanks for posting this video.
Excellent info! Would you be able to run the WD Sn850X 2tb perhaps?
Thank you for including PC mark 10 test in the video.
Just got the P44 Pro 2TB for 110$ couldn't be happier
At the time I bought my 2, 2tb FireCuda 530 drives, they were the fastest around, had really good TBW AND comes with 3yr data rescue included free. That could be a massive win if someone needs their data recovered
I got the Cardea z440 2tb I use them as my game drive because of the cost and TBW was massive
Curiously enough, TBW is not an important metric for a game drive.
Yes, the files can get very large, but unless you are very frequently installing and uninstalling games (running out of space, which is unlikely), all you will really do is read from the drive, and that doesn't touch the TBW at all.
As an example, my game drive is an older Samsung 840 EVO, and the data written so far, after 7+ years, is a paltry 5.9TB. That's 4% from a TBW of 150!
Its a rather old SSD, but health wise, its almost as new!
Newer games write very large files during installation, but how often do you install new games!?
Once a game is installed, the only writing going on, are the save files, so TBW becomes a very non-issue.
In fact, i would say the most important metric for a games drive is the Sequential Read, and more importantly, the Random Read.
@@00Resev well, with several online games, along with games I run mods on, there are a LOT of updates being downloaded and installed. I'm up to 40TBW in just a year on my drive, which is also the drive I do editing on and everything else, along with my os drive. I just have one main 2tb Seagate FireCuda 530 and an additional one I clone to once a week
@@00Resev I was just making a comment about TBW. Back when that 840 came out, there was a lot of endurance testing over on the xtremesystems forums. Everyone was curious to see how this newfangled TLC NAND performed. One person tested the 128GB drive to something like 500TB before write amplification and reallocated sectors started popping up. So realistically you're under 1% of actual TBW!! And I believe he started that test with a few TB of static filled space to represent more realistic usage.
Thank you, this saved my day!
Bro has the best comparison content out there. Must be very happy to use t44 pro
Very informative video. If I were to buy 3 drives, 2TB each,(programs/project/data) all exactly the same brand and model number, what would you recommend? I would consider myself moderate use creator.
Comprehensive test with some interesting results. It would be worth knowing how much does the performance degrade with some repeated (ab)use of the SSD with repeated data reading and writing. Anyway, this is informative and interesting comaprison test video !
Currently running WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB as main OS and game drive, and have a external WD_BLACK D30 2TB as game drive. Still waiting for 4TB NVME SSD to be more mainstream then I will add them to my 3 free slots on the ProArt X670E board. 😅
Wow the intro into your videos i amazing!
@theTechNotice I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge on your channel that I've gained by binge watching for the past few weeks Larri. I've learnt so much especially on SSD's. I went ahead and purchased a Samsung 990 PRO 1TB for my O/S drive, a Seagate FIRECUDA 530 4tb & a T-Force Cardea Z440 2TB for my project drives, and finally a Seagate FIRECUDA 530 500GB for cache drive based on your recommendations on your channel. I'm very happy with the performance of all the drives and my workflow is much smoother. I even reused my former O/S drive which was a slower PCIe gen 3 drive to my son's laptop and that thing is much faster now compared to the shitty Toshiba HDD it had previously. Now I'm planning on upgrading my I7-12700k to the I9-13900KS by the end of the year. looking forward to more Creator targeted content from you. keep up the good work my friend/guru. cheers.
The Crucial T500 and the Lexar NM800 would be nice to see tested against this lineup of drives.
best deal for me always 2tb gen4 around 120 euros+... amazing value now i got 3 x2TB on my mother board and it s perfect (WDSN770+samsung 980 pro)
Thank you! Very helpful!
Great content as always and great comparison review! I'm using this SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 Up to 7,000MB/S For my Content creation drive. It's preforming well and very fast so far but now after your review I'm wondering if I chose the right drive hah! Perhaps you could test this drive in the future? I'd also be curious how diff drives perform in Adobe Premier or DaVinci Resolve as far as exports go? Are there any big differences? Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
You did well. Hynix owns Solidigm and your P41 Platinum is the same drive as the P44 Pro, same hardware different drivers, which was at the top of most of the tests.
@@cgsather3309 Ahh I didn't know that, that's awesome ty!
Team Group has silently change the type of flash in the Z440 (a one time or another) from the 96 layer nand (with the 3600 TBW) to Kioxia 112 layer nand, which would only have a TBW of 1200. I think it's really dirty of these companies to change the components in their drives, without giving it a different model number.
thank you so much for this video!
Just bought 2 Crucial `MX500 4TB. I'm thinking MX500 will spec out lower than the Kingston and Samsung 990. Would like to see how it rates (also price wise if you can).
What speed is your NVMe socket to CPU connection? I've read about direct PCIe and thru a controller. How does that affect speed? PCIe 3.0 vs 4.0 vs 5.0 (is 5.0 even possible)? Speeds using RAID? How about filling the drives to 80% of capacity then testing speed? Just a couple of suggestions.
Love the detailed info, and production of your videos. Keep up the great work!
I am really curious now how a Sabrent drive, for example a rocket 4 plus 1 or 2 TB would perform compared to the ones shown in the video.
Hi! Great video and I love your channel!
When you make proxy files for a project, are those considered cache files for the cache drive, or are those project files as well?
If you only have 3 drives, would you say combine the project and cache drives?
My motherboard has one PCIE4 M.2 slot and one PCIE3 M.2 slot. Should the faster one be for the OS and Programs or for the projects? Thanks!!! You're the best!!!
I'd say whichever can fit them. Whichever had more capacity :) because one you use proxies, the original files won't be used, so you can put them in the project drive. :)
@@theTechNotice Thank you so much!
@@theTechNoticehey man i need some help so i want to buy the 4tb lexar NM790 for my ps5 they say it overheats so i don't know which heatsing i would need to use for the ssd and does it not lower the performance or anything for the ps5 itself sorry for my bad English i hope you can reply and if you can suggest me an ssd this one is around 220€ thanks
Very Informative keep it up.
Could you possibly do some testing of heat sinks on M.2 SSD's?
I realize that there is massive difference in air flow over the SSD's depending on the motherboard and the position of the SSD on it.
Maybe you can could test a limited number of SSD's and heatsink solutions to find a relative trend in cooling performance.
I ask because I've had wildly different results trying to cool some SSD's. An Adata XPG SSD idled at over 60C but a simple heatsink brought the temperature down to under 40C. A Crucial P5+ only went down from 60C to 55C to 45C from no heat sink to a simple heat sink to a large heat sink.
I know that some PC enthusiasts say it doesn't matter at all but I never liked PC components that could burn me while operating!
Mein Freund, Verbatim is pronounced ver-BAY-tim, not ver-BUH-tim. Danke. 😉
I'd be interested is some info about choosing and using an add in NVMe riser card. What slots and lanes to use. How about using lanes from the graphics 16 (using 8 in the seconds slot for NVMe)?
I would like to see a optane (like 900p or P5800x) in the mix.
Great Video! I rock a 2TB SK Hynix P41 Platinum for my boot/OS, a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro for my games only, a 4TB Samsung 870 Evo for my music files (I produce and write music in FL Studio) and a 4TB Seagate Barracuda SATA HDD for large misc/random files. In my experience I find the SK Hynix P41 Platinum is the fastest especially for boot/OS and this is based on real life usage not on paper.
Hey Mr, very nice video that you created. Can I assume that the best SSD for Creator is the best SSD for gamer as well? thank you!!
Very good comparison. It could be better if you could include some NVMe SSD's from WD.
It would be nice to see how these stack up against the newer, sabrent rocket plus G. Also, where is the WD sn850x?
Lastly, the Kingston Fury renegage is a slightly improved version of the KC3000.
There are different speeds among 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. Comparing them can give a different result.
Alright, it was interesting to see synthetic benchmarks, but how about real tests for creators? 😉
I'd like to see, how these samples perform in real apps. And, the most interesting question, does it make sense to buy something from the top, or maybe, the performance, provided by, say, Samsung 990 Pro is overkill, and is not yet fully applicable in real environments? For this reason, it is more wise to buy something more cheaper, but still performant, like Samsung 980 Pro, and spend your money on better video card or expand memory? These are the questions without the answers yet...
Interesting to also compare the WD Black SN770 2Tb
I use it . Check price for gen 4...
I already bought kingston fury renegade 2tb, I think it is better then 990 pro in most of the specifications. 😊
I grabbed a Firecuda 530 with the heatsink... It doesn't have a pre-installed encryption on it. I intend to encrypt it myself. The drives that states AES256 is inhouse encryption from many of these companies can be hacked into using backend and backdoor methods. The newest Firecuda 530 that was manufactured earlier this year has read and write of 7300 a piece. The guy's Firecuda in the video is an old variant
@@fightsandfinance7570 don't know about that brother, and youtubers don't go that deep now a days, he also doesn't told us about slc cache capacity.
I'd love to see you review the 8TB - Sabrent Rocket Q. Is it worth the money? Does it perform as well on the benchmarks? Can you achieve the save by using 4 x 2TB. Are there any real world benefits to 8TB? Also, how much storage does the average person use and perhaps even the CZcams creator use?
great video, but you can compare the samsung 990 PRO vs WD BLACK SN850x?
I needed this. I recently bought a 980Pro 1TB because it was on sale... ant that it was very popular but I was waiting to understand why.
There's no doubt, the overall drive is the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. It's the best write and read speed, both sequential and random files, big and small, and they are good on MTBF and daily big size files management. My problem is only purchasing some 3 or 4 if them. They are expensive in my Country. 😮❤
Hi, I'd like to know what's your opinion on Kingston KC3000 vs Fury Renegade, they seem somewhat same, but price difference still seems quite notable
Please review Crucial gen3 and gen4 drives (2TB and 1 TB), I am really considering to buy them. Creating my first pc (i5 12600k, aero g z690, rtx 3060). Love the new logo.
That is not a optimal build unless you found some price drops.
@@Kevin-fl7mj yes you're right, but i purchased these parts last year but then i got busy. Now i am going to finish it. Ssd, case and monitor remaining.
Hi there, One question.
I bought the Lexar NM790 with heatsink 4Tb because it was cheap and it will me more like a backup disk but I can't find an external enclosure that fits it. Any suggestion?
Hey. Should I get Samsung 990 Pro M.2 4TB for 410€ or Western Digital Black SN850X M.2 4TB for 330€?
I recently purchased adata 960pro and silicon power ud90. What are you thoughts on that?
Had Samsung Evo 960 500GB since it's release and it's been working flawlessly since late 2016. Can't see why I shouldn't go with Samsung again I'd take longevity over speed any day of the week.
Built mine last Aug with Firecude 530 for all my drives, but thinking if I should upgrade my OS drive 1TB since it’s 80% full to either a 2TB or 4TB. 😅
What's your opinion on the Crucial P3 4TB?
I find it online in 🇸🇬 for S$340(USD250).
My H410 M H V3 only supports PCIE 3 and I want to max out the capacity on the NVME SSD since there's only 1 slot on the motherboard
Thanks
Edit: Found a TEAMGROUP MP34 4TB for SGD278 (USD 206). Would like your opinion on it too.
wd sn850x 4tb should be cheaoer and better
@technotice For Kingston KC3000, will going for 1TB version or the 2TB version instead of the mentioned 4TB version make any diff?? I am asking for OS use only, will KC3000 1TB be good for OS Drive? please suggest
What do you think about the transcend 250s?
Please add these on the list your next buying guide video. Sabrent Rocket / Rocket Plus and WD Blue / Black. Thanks!
It would be interesting to see the Oyen Digital Dash Pro 4TB and 8TB tested. I have been unable to find any reviews on this one. I purchased one anyway. Haven't installed it yet. It only has a 3 year warranty but it is 3000 TBW 4TB and 6000 TBW 8TB.
Just realized.
How come the WD drives are not part of this test? I have 3 SN850s 2x2TB in Raid 0 for projects/games/etc. large files, and 1 TB for OS and Software.
I just purchased the SN850X 4TB today from Prime Day. These WD drives are amazing for creators, great scratch disk for Cacheing C4D, AE, and or PR cache. Not sure why it's not even in consideration in these tests?
If I use my rig for gaming also where should I put my games? OS Drive or Cash etc. Especially if I want to record and stream gameplay.
Please make a comparison between expensive and budget ones.
I recently got a 980 pro 2TB for $115. Highly recommend getting M.2
I can't decide between 980 pro and 990 pro. past framework issues hold me back from buying 990 pro. How is the health of your 980 pro?
I have a pair of 990 Pro's, they are ridiculously fast for gaming and content creation.
How about Crucial and Western Digital? Been seeing them in Amazon while canvassing but I'm not sure if they'll be good options in exchange for more affordable price..
Could you make a comparison of which is the best for a laptop, testing battery life?
Sure!
Hi, great video! Btw, can you make a video recommendation pc build that good for editing, 3D animating, and gaming, but make the budget under $2,000 💪😁
For which drive type the TBW is from most importance? I assume fro the project drive. The size of the DRAM-Cache usually grows with the size of the drive, so e.g. the Firecuda 530 4TB would make the best Project Drive, for the storage drive it should be of no big importance, just big and fast read speeds, for the system drive high iops and fast read speeds, for the cache drive high iops high TBW fast read and writes probably the hardest to choose
i would pick a Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB for system, Firecuda 530 4 TB for project, probably a Seagate 530 2 TB for Cache, and a 8TB NVME for storage. Where i'm not definitely sure with the cache drive? I would probably increase the Provision on the system drive for a longer lifespan from 10% to 15%
How the heck do you edit videos with a big ol bottle of Moonshine just chillin' in the corner? (@ 5:41) lol!
Lol its water 💧 🤣
Would you recommend having your program installed on the same hard drive as your project files, eg: Davinci resolve installed on the same hard drive as your video files or Blender on the same drive as your assets (Hopefully this makes sense)... I was planning on having a drive for the OS, documents, and spurious programs, a drive for projects and assets, a drive for games, and a drive for storage... Would this be viable?
you plan sounds good! :)
If my MoBo supports 4 nvme: Would it be best to use one for each drive type, or use the 4 in Raid 10 for everything?
990 pro pretty much tops the charts all around. I’m not shocked. There’s a reason they’re popular.
Best m2 ssd list in order in the video:
Samsung 990 pro 1TB = 2,42
KC3000 4TB = 3
Solidigm P44 Pro 1TB = 3,28
Firecuda 530 2TB = 3,71
Cardea A440 1TB = 6
Lexar NM790 2Tb = 6,14
Verbatim Vi7000G 2TB = 6,85
Cardea Z440 1TB = 7,42
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB = 8
Solidigm P41 Plus 1TB = 8,71
Samsung 980 1TB = 10,42
Generally speaking, the _advertised_ TBW is *not* a determining factor, as this is mostly associated with the warranty/image the company is _comfortable_ with.
Samsung tends to *downplay* their TBW (even though objective testing has proven their drives to be some of, if not, the best, exceeding TBW by orders of magnitude); Seagate tends to have a *higher* annualized failure rate (AFR) prior to ever reaching TBW. Just understand that there is a _range_ of build quality separate from the somewhat arbitrary "TBW" specification.
-Personally, I prefer Samsung (even with a slight premium) as a top-tier product.
-Solidigm (formerly Intel) would be a close second consideration, though they would have to (somewhat substantially) beat Samsung on price to sway me.
-Personally, I'd avoid Seagate.
