For those who would dismiss the achievement of this man. Face a famine. Watch as your family nearly starves. Go to a second-rate school for one year and then drop out for 5 years because your family is so poor. Using just the knowledge from books in a village library; teach yourself how ac and dc differ; fashion your own drill and screwdriver from scraps at the local dump; build your own switches and circuit breakers (modified from diagrams for an electric bell you saw in a text book)....

@Gerry Berry pardon, fella, but it is far from the norm and I think you probably know that. It's great you had those accomplishments, and very commendable, but ppl make life/village changing implements every day? No. Teaching yourself electricity, the difference between a/c and d/c isnt dismissable as a simplistic thing. Yes, you did very well, kudos to you. But also credit where credit is due, because this guy IS quite extraordinary. Sorry, I just found your rebuke unnecessary and quite rude.

I believe you should look outside the box and think. " what can I do to help humanity?" "what do the people need?" thats a start.

In the year 2007 he visited our campus to gather more information on how he can built a wind mill to pump water for irrigation. As a secondary school drop out he impressed everyone with his ingenuity in wind mills and basic physics. This is 2023 and the boy is living his dream of harnessing the wind 🇲🇼

I am a substitute teacher in a high school and had a long-term teaching assignment for some technology classes in 2019. One morning, on my way to class, I found out that I had to have the students build a race car and race it.
Since I did not know how to build a race but had all of the necessary supplies in my classroom, I decided to use William's story to challenge the students. It worked. The students were so excited about building the car, used their own ingenuity to design the car, and raced their car in the small gymnasium. With a little push, some of the cars sped all the way across the floor and ran into the wall on the opposite side of the gymnasium.
This year (School Year 2022-2023) I am a long-term sub teaching technology classes again. Since I have now seen the movie, viewed excerpts from the book, etc., I decided to develop a lesson to use William's story to inspire my students.

The tears came out when I see the expression of his dad (in the movie) observing the water closely and turbine working and when suddenly the water start erupting, the way he shouts running towards the water and then clutches his son. Damn. What a beautiful scene!! Actor chiwetel is so so so good in this movie!!! The whole hardship, the way everything just keeps falling and the way it ends, just inspiring and beautiful. Between being nervous and not having very good English, this doesn't really do justice to how smart and inventive he is and been since he was a kid. He was 19 here, the same age I am now. God bless Africa, there are so many people who live there who have nothing, kids play with bottle tops not toys, they don't have regular schooling, yet they are smiling and make use of everything successfully. There is such a lot that they can teach the rest of us who live like kings and queens in comparison, yet we don't have that noble fight.
