Man this really shows just how hard it can be to regain institutional knowledge even within things like Speedrunning communities. Just think of how long it would have taken for the Western runners to rediscover half of the Japanese techniques or even the idea to use certain vehicles if they never found that website

I hope this doesn't come off as rude, but I was debating not watching this video at first since I had no knowledge of the game or speedrun, but MAN am I glad I did, it never ceases to amaze me how talented some people are these games! Props too all the people who made this community a reality.

Update for anyone watching now: About a year after this video, Yokaze got a sub-17 and that’s still the current record to this day.
I recognize that pearstrike is very good at this game and helped push the world record for this, but I absolutely hate his congratulations alarm. It's like it's specifically designed to be as annoying as possible.

What you do really well is explain how the basic game works and make outsiders feel included. I've never played Kirby's Air Ride, but I loved this video.
Thanks! We make it a point to make sure that everyone is up to speed, even people who never played the game. We've seen a few of these kinds of videos where a lot of assumptions are made about the what the viewer knows and it alienates people. We want to prevent that from happening

Although no one would do it in a speedrun, I love how Air Ride can be played one handed. You can use the L button instead of the A button; it does the same thing.

How would you do that? You can do most basic interactions with one button, but I'm pretty sure you need a couple other buttons to navigate menus fully (a big part of any turn based RPG). And there are one or two more buttons that are convenient but not necessary.
@@OriginalPiMan I think the point was actually that you can play Earthbound one handed rather than with one button. I can see how it might be read as playing Earthbound with just one button. I mean, technically, you still have to press left and right to select courses here, right? So, it's not just mashing the A button only.

Most people don't consider the analogue stick to be a button, so left and right aren't adding to the button count on Air Ride.
And if we're talking about playing games one handed when they require buttons on both sides of the controller, then there are lots of games that can be played like that. Halfcoordinated is a speedrunner who has been to GDQ a few times and plays everything one handed because he has extremely poor dexterity in the other hand; he only uses the other hand to keep the controller steady.
@@OriginalPiMan That's interesting - I would have thought the stick would be considered a button because it's still something you are pressing. Earthbound doesn't "require" buttons on both sides of the controller. The L button does what the A button does, while the Select button does what the B button does. At least for the most part. It's actually designed that way, not a "buttons from both sides have to be pressed" situation.
The amount of work and research that goes into these videos never fails to impress me!

Yeah, I thought that comment was a little strange lol. Cause racing games are kind of the original speedruns. Instead of high scores, racing games are all about squeezing out milliseconds and getting faster and faster times. But pickles was really new to the whole scene at that time, so he probably meant that he didn't think it had broad appeal or deep mechanics

What ever came out of those "Multiplayer All Achievements"(?) runs on Dolphin Netplay that Indextic was part of a few years ago?
Wompa Stompa they did it for a month or two and got a decent time I think. No one has really done multiplayer 100 checkboxes runs since then.

Funny that the Japanese basically always had the worldrecord. But the western community thought they had it. Then when the Japanese runner annihilated their so called world record the Western community comes up with another category. On which they already started working on and set records then another Japanese runner comes along and again annihilated the record. 😂

Can you do a video about the history of Halo speed running? A lot of people aren't aware of HaloRuns.com and assume all the halo times are on speedrun.com. If you're wondering why there's a separate website for halo speed running is because the site was around before speedrun.com. Halo 1-5 all have runners (halo 1 and 2 being the most popular) and all the WR's and times are listed on Halo Runs, we could use some fresh runners in the community. So a video about it would help a lot.

All Tracks is the main category, with 50+ runners. All Tracks No Duplicate Rides, as you pointed out, is not the main category. When they hit a wall with All Tracks, the top runners started running ATND as an alternative. CCNeverender did, in fact, do a run for research about a month ago. The community articulated to us that the story spanned multiple categories, so we told their story. -- CJ
@@SpeedDocs All Tracks category currently has 54 entries. All Tracks No Duplicates has eight entries. So you would be correct.
