Jak and Daxter - Speedrun World Record History

- In its simplest form, speedrunning is the process of whittling away at a game. Players do as much as they can, as fast as they can, to disrupt the natural order of things. Sometimes these tricks are like a small paring knife, and other times these glitches are like a chainsaw. Even the best made games have their flaws, some more apparent than others.
We’ve looked under every rock and boulder for this one. The runners of this game have walked through fire and lived to tell the tale. The wise sages of yesteryear have shared what they’ve learned. Don’t pause, because you might miss something! This is the story of Jak and Daxter; The Precursor Legacy. Today, we are looking at the Any% category. Anything goes in these parts. Hold on, because things are about to pick up. Welcome to Speed Docs.

Due to an Encoding error during the rendering process, there's an audio glitch from 50:55 to about 51:05 . Unfortunately, we didn't catch it until the premier of the video.... Sorry about that
no apology needed.
No apology needed, you guys are amazing!!
I was about to mention.
Looks like you pause buffered out some dialogue there.
This was good Doc
Thanks for making this content. I hope it continues. I wish I could give it a million views to pay for the effort and quality of these videos. Even though you are picking excellent games. I say, Go as mainstream as you can to pull in more viewers! (Minecraft and junk) Even be click baity with titles and thumbnails. This is great content. Although, if your current model is sustainable, then keep it going! We love it.
Hey, i know this game
hey i know this guy
@@MadmanFlechr same
Hey this guy seems pretty cool wonder if he makes speed run docs
Wait a second...I know this guy
Who tf is this
Jack and Decker is my favorite video game
*Dexter
@@PowercellZeke He did it as a dank meme. He spelled jak wrong too there buckaroo lol.
@@funnyfreek haha I know, it's just most people say Dexter when they're wrong
same here, my favourite is Braxter

The greatest story ever told. When naruto and pikachu joined forces to find the car keys under the guidance of the one true God Owen Wilson.
God that was literally the best gdq run of all time it had me dying laughing at like 2am watching that run
@@ThyJeffinater I can't believe they banned him for that. Like with some of the weirdest shit that takes place with runners in that event, it's the guy with the dad jokes about Owen Wilson and an Canadian Airline that was beyond the pale.
@@VaporeonEnjoyer1 It was the fact viewers were to heavily going after the Airline mid-run had them extremely unhappy about it.
@@Zelinkokitsune Except that the airline didn't notice any attention, it was just the GDQ staff crapping their pants preemptively.
@@kaetoc Yea but them getting spooked was warranted as they didn't realize the airline would just ignore it
First runner be like:" hIGhLy oPTimIcED¡ cAN,t sHaVE 5 MiNUtes¿"
Not not to shave: You won't shave 5 minutes playing this game.
@@jeffrey1954 wut?
Literally every first time world record holders of old games. You should check out the speedrun history of God of War (PS2) which was genuinely toxic competition. Lots of shit talking between the big runners.
"Some people reading this don't know what a VHS is". Ouch. Way to make me feel old, and I'm only 26!
I am 15 and I was raised off of VHS for a bit bayBEE
I know what a VHS is and im only 2
I'm a fetus and I know what a vhs is.
Thank you for telling our story and thank you for inviting me for an interview!
#UNBANLVGHST
The story of Ben is honestly hilarious, because his defense of his run saying no one would shave even 5 minutes off his time was proven wrong in every way. Not only did someone quickly shave 40 minutes off his run by just playing the game better and not being afraid of spiders, but nowadays the Any% category has runs totaling only 15 minutes, 1/9th of his time, and the 100% category has runs totaling just over an hour and a half, nearly an hour faster than his Any% run despite collecting every Power Cell and every Precursor Orb.
It would probably be better to compare the glitches any% run
But yeah lmao, that is the reason I'm scared of saying anything with confidence. It just makes you look like a jackass later on.
Honestly, it reads like a parable about hubris (ala The Tortoise and the Hare).
He was proud for being afraid of spiders lmao
Top 3 hardest things in Speedrunning:
#3: Frame Perfect Tricks
#2: RNG
#1: Spiders
Oh god yes, 2 hours. I can rewatch this and fall asleep so many times. The enjoyment you can get from 2 hours is closer to 30 min + 8 hours*4... and then rinse and repeat. Good night everyone
I do that too. Stops me from lucid dreaming mostly, although sometimes it does bleed over and I hear the video in my dream and think someone's talking to me.
I do it too, it’s the only thing that gets me to sleep
Your interviews with the players are a game changer. Your voice and narration are great, i love it, but the interviews take you to the next level
so happy to be a part of this. amazing explanations for all the tricks. thanks again for doing this.
"Yes, that bonesaw"
I got it this time!
The run down of what the games basic mechanics and point is was much appreciated. I have never played this series- but, I love your videos. So deeply grateful you have a run down before jumping into it. Fantastic work as always!
We know that not everyone has played these games, so we want to make sure no one gets left behind. Glad you enjoy the videos! Thanks for your support :)
@@SpeedDocs I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know until just now that Daxter wasn’t always an orange animal thing.
This is particularly embarrassing because this is my SECOND TIME WATCHING THIS.
The interviews really elevate the whole thing, they’re great.
I got this for my 13th birthday. I played through it so many times. It was really the best platformer since SM64 imo. ground breaking smart loading times too
I got it for my 6th birthday without a memory card. Fun times beating geyser rock for like 50 times and going to bed before my parents noticed what a memory card was.
Man Ive followed Josh for awhile in the background but seeing him lose his mind watching someone beat his crowning achievement run just goes to show just how genuinely nice a guy he is
I’ve been watching this bit by bit the last few nights and like…gosh you make really good docs. I love that the runners share their voices, the little text below the text, the clear explanations and narrative arc. Couldn’t be happier.
I'm not sure why... I can't quite put my finger on it. But all of the Speed Docs videos make me feel nostalgic for old school G4TV documentaries like Icons. Keep it up guys I love it.
I watch these documentaries for games I'm not even familiar with because I love learning all this stuff and you present it in such an entertaining and informative way, but REALLY excited to see the upcoming LoZ:TWW episode, since I'll actually know some of the folks involved in the history!
This was absolutely fantastic. Watched the whole thing and loved every minute. Looking forward to going back and watching the older ones; subscribed!
Beautiful video. I'm so glad someone took the time to make an amazing jak speedrun history video. The game means a lot to me, and it's great to see it's speedrun history being treated with such respect. Thanks man
God I love SpeedDoc's . There is literally nothing else I look forward to on the internet more than a Speed Doc
I feel like your storytelling, scripting, explainations and editing has been getting better with each new video, not to mention the (relatively) blistering pace you're releasing content.
Also, could you have chosen a more wholesome community? It was really great seeing everyone at GDQ cheering on Louigi.
Why aren’t more people watching Speed Docs. I seriously don’t get it. Keep it up, your time will come! I greatly appreciate what you guys do. Amazing work!
We dont plan on stopping any time soon :)
great speedrun video, you guys are top notch speedrun content creators
Wonderful work as always, love the depth of everything pls keep going and makin more
These keep getting better and better. Keep up the great work!
The best video thus far! Enjoyed every second of it and love the work you people are putting in
Fantastic video. Really like how it starts in humble beginnings (changing in-game options) and then progresses into advanced tech.
Love this video man! Everyone seems really nice for the most part and an encouraging community
what a great video. I was intrigued from start to finish. You all should be so, so proud of yourselves!
i couldn't be happier about finding this channel, is everything i always enjoyed about speedruns. I really like the stories of how the people overcome every obstacle that appears while trying to improve their times and how they solve the puzzles as a community. Love your vids, i hope you continue uploading this documentaries. Meanwhile, with your permission, im gonna watch the totallity of your channel
Wow, amazing job! Watched the Whole video and discovered this great speedrun world for this game! Thanks for this video :D
Mr S. Docs…..you deserve so many more views and subscribers. I truly hope you get the recognition you deserve for all your excellent work!
Amazing, thanks for a new documentary! You guys are legends!
So excited to watch this keep up the amazing work
This is one of the few YT channels I have the bell turned on. Thank you for yet another great speedrun doc!
(I know I’m late but I saved this video for later)
Thanks for the support!
Thanks once again for a great video
The clip from gdq was just awesome, thanks to whoever provided that 😄❤️
Looks like a super interesting episode, i hope we'll be able to have some form of subtitles soon so I can understand it
i threw the script in as the subtitles so hopefully itll process faster now
@@SpeedDocs thank you so much for the hard work, this episode was amazing, it had the perfect mix of tech explaining and runners drama, you really nailed it.
@@SpeedDocs honesty super impressive
Fantastic video as usual!
I just gotta say I love you for this. It’s what you do but this is the coolest channel on YT for me and I’m just finding it out now
Very interesting video! Well done
In the last video I said unfortunately a big portion of this was already done but I will watch this one anyhow. And I am glad I did. This was awesome work guys :)
Thanks for the video, I love watching speedrun docs like battle for bottom and Mario 64. Bonesaws run at GDQ got me into speed running for my fav game and this makes me want to do jak and daxter runs
I Really enjoyed the video nice work!
Really good video, Im glad to be apart of something awesome!
Thank you so much for a making a speed run history of my childhood game
Im speechless. I simply cant put down a message that describes my feelings after watching this.
Holy shit... I am nothing but a humble casual jak player who is reexperiencing my childhood on youtube. I know nothing about jak communities in any way nor speed running communities. But u managed to break it all down to an understandable 2 hr awesome video. Huge probs and likes from me. This work from you and ofc the speedrunners was 2 good hrs of fun for me to watch.
-Amazing work
i literally know nothing about jak and daxter speedrunning, but this is still an amazing video. thanks for taking the time to explain as much as you did!
im sure the more versed jak players could care less, but for outsiders like myself, it's invaluable to understand the progression of the game.
I’m 51 mins in, but this is a terrific video so far. Great work, you guys!
Great content as always.
This Jazz guy kinda pog
Ayo?
In fairness to that original speed runner, spiders ARE scary 😬🤣
Agreed
Can't wait for Jak 2! That's a hard game and I am curious to see the history of how that game is ran.
Just a shit load of exploits and skips
Thank you for syncing the music to the walk cycle at 1:21:25 what wonderful attention to detail!
"You should check the thread yourself if you have the time." Bruh, I'm sitting here watching a 2 hour video on Jak & Daxter speedrunning history. Very bold of you to assume I'm short on time right now. 😂
“Headstrong much like a Shonen protagonist hears “this is impossible” and took that personally”
Easily one of the best bits of this video
Man we'll never be able to see a sub 1:30 in this category, truly a shame.
Awesome video !!!
This is so well done
Absolutely phenomenal storytelling.
This should have more views. It's a great video!!
Tell your friends!
I can't believe I watched this whole 2 hour video. I have never played this game and I don't even own a game console right now! Very interesting to see how every "insurmountable" problem is overcome with tons of perseverance and ingenuity.
_You_ _are_ _a_ _speedrunner?_ *Legendary!*
I miss speeddocs. So excited for the return
I remember Buying the jack trilogy backwards on ps2 as a kid. I imagined it to be an obscure title due to Lack of Internet access. I would’ve been so happy to see a huge community picking at the game in every way just for speed
Why do I get a feeling our boy Ben Vicker wishes he never made that post now about 2 hours and 14 minutes being neigh unbreakable?
So, When is Sly Cooper and the Thevius Racoonus? It only seems fitting. Great Vid BTW I always loved the PS2 Trio
This was great! Thanks
When you see every speedrunner in the comment section
Its mind boggling how they went from “you can barley shred 5 minutes” to sub 20
Headstrong is very good name for a headstrong person
Awesome documentary. Loved all the interviews and the in depth explanations throughout.
Though y’boy’s gotta ask- what was that absolute banger of a song at the end? I couldn’t find it in the Jak OST but it vibes so hard I feel like it’s gotta be in there.
The title track was a song created by our musical wizard Squidbird. Look up "Cyber Jungle 69"
@@SpeedDocs Aw you’re a gem mate, thanks so much I never would have found that. Y’all have great taste in music, the selection works so well for these kind of videos.
6:49 that was savage of you
Great job!
You AND summoning salt, the pinnacle of historians for something I couldn't believe would have historians, always looking forward to your videos, already awaiting the UYA record progression
We're not Salt, btw
@@SpeedDocs the moment you realize you screwed up and forgot a word... I'll correct it
@@SpeedDocs I think now it maybe is clearer what I wanted to say, really love your vids even though I had no idea of speedrunning before finding you or salt, really think you deserve so much more subscribers!
EDIT : What I am trying to say is, you have the same production value at least, I only wish you the best
It's all good :) glad you like our content
@@SpeedDocs just anticipating every new video, in this times your content is pretty precious to me and i believe many others 👌
2 hours video ? well better to take a sh** before watching this masterpiece
14:11 That might be one of the best popoffs I've seen in a while.
I always wish there were videos like these for games like Bioshock, New Vegas, or Borderlands, but then I remember that these are relatively recent and take a lot of time to make. But I’m always entertained, no matter whether I’ve played the game myself or have never heard about it in my life. Another great vid, Speed Docs!
Out of curiosity, is the Wind Waker video covering the original game? I’ve seen a history video for the HD version on the Wii U, but not for the original.
Yes, it will cover the original Gamecube version
Great video.
Great Video
Best series ever!
When I was a little kid catching the fish was hard as fuck
"Yes, that bonesaw" ♥
Car Keys
Why don’t you have more views your series is excellent. Just as good as summoning salt but actually branch into other games apart from mario kart
Just watched the video for the second time
It’s one of the best for speed running community
This is astonishing people break a game like this. My favorite childhood game torn apart. It's cool tho seeing these speeds.
o got when it got to the bonesaw part my first thought was #bonemom who else remembers those days
im happy this exists
It will be a glorious day when we get the jak and daxter movie which will hopefully lead into another game 🤩
congrats aslov!
"less than 2 hours isn't possible" How about 16 minutes?
🖕🏻😂🖕🏻
Each to their own on how you think or work or whatever, I have no issue with Bonesaw being a "lone wolf" in this area, but still, I get an impression he was not to nice of a person to help his fellow competitors, which in turn often pays back in kind... so part of me only expected him to eventually be out beat by someone he didnt help
I'll never forget how mad it made me when I first got all the power cells to open the final door and it literally just showed a blinding light🤣 I threw my controller across the room and was like WTF WHAT WAS BEHIND THE DOOR?! 🤣🤣🤣 talk about disappointment lmao
Woah this is epic
what part of the soundtrack is the bangin' tune at the very end
"Wow." - Owen Wilson
And now, a little over 6 months later, the any% record is all the way down to 16m08s by Josh, with of course Jazz in 2nd at 16m23s.
Sub 20 minutes and all without ever finding out you could skip cutscenes with triangle. It's impressive and maddening all art the same time.
what is blud wafflin about
you dont think I can dance? I can fucking dance. PROCEEDS TO BUST A GROOVE
