  • Sundews are covered in glistening dew that is both beautiful and deadly; these drops are how they catch their prey! Sometimes they stop producing dew. How do you get your sundew to be more sticky and produce these dew drops? Daniela will tell you what you need to do to make your sundew happy again!

    I was reading the humidity as well plays a part the if it's below 60% dew won't produce on sundews becasue it's to dry ,I had that problem in my indoor grow room a week after I raised the humidity past 60 for a week the dew came back , the tropicals are in the indoor area, under a 1000w leds

      Humidity is the last thing you should worry about with most sundews. Only a few specific groups of sundews care about humidity at all (uncommon to rare South American species, rare tropical African species, and the three sisters from Australia.) The vast majority of sundews you can easily buy will grow happily in 20% humidity or less, though higher humidity will make the dew drops larger.

    Thank you for the video. Wow beauty’s. In the 70s I used to grow these and pitcher plants. Also I love tillandisas. Fast forward now I have my favorite Tillandsias & staghorns & super bum but not the Carnavoire plants. I’m gonna have to see if my backyard stock pond is in a good spot to have these again. Love them

      Technically, you can also use rain water. The water just has to be low in minerals

    My new Sundew has dew, is hydrated, but doesn't seem to eat. There are a few small flying insects trapped in the dew, but it's not curling around them. Any advice?

    • @California_Carnivores

    i’ve had sundews for a few years, and they’ve always thrived, but recently i moved them from a south window to a north window, knowing it would have a lack of sun a installed grow lights, so they get both natural sun and artificial sun, and yet they are unhappy, i’m so lost.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před rokem

      Sometimes it’s just that they need time to adjust out. If it’s been less than six weeks, wait a little longer and see if they bounce back in that time. If they still look rough, try adjusting your grow light. Sundews can be grown on a 12 hour day length of light under grow lights so you can increase the hours it’s on. Or you can move it so that it’s closer to the plants.

    I tried not to leave mine outside do to the dry west texas air and its been in the windowsill for weeks getting 12 hours of indirect sun. I assume thats not enough. Came here cus i found mold in my moss, so keeping it to moist i guess so after i fix that maybe it can stand a little more dryness. Current plan is to take it to my moms tomorrow where it can get hit by direct sun from 9 am to 12 and indirect rest of the day. I hopes this would work better than some venus fly traps that worked fine till they died from not checking on them in 2 days of high heat

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před 4 měsíci

      Indirect sun usually doesn’t work well for most sundews and is usually the reason they get moldy as well. If you have an indoor windowsill where it gets direct sun for at least half the day it should do well!

    I have a pot of subtropical sundews on an indoor western windowsill with 8h artificial led growlights and always 1-2cm water in the tray, temperature is about 18°C, humidity is medium to low, no fungus
    though the plants seem not to get any dew (its 3 weeks on this windowsill now) and just dont seem to adapt? Any idea what the problem might be?

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před 9 měsíci

      I would increase the day length to 10-12 hours over the course of a few days. Give it another week and they still have no dew, move them closer to the light or reevaluate the light you’re using

  • @kristianamarie6762

    So my sundews were outside after I got them (a set of 3) there dew came back really fast and they were thriving but because it’s gotten much colder I brought them inside a couple weeks ago and they have lot all there dew. I keep them in watering trays under a grow light so the difference is that they are inside and under a light instead of sun. Water is the same. Do you know what the problem could be? I also have humidity between 60-80 most the time

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před rokem +1

      It could be that you have to mess with the light a little. There are two factors at play: day length and distance. If your lights are on for less than 12 hours, increase to 12. If that doesn’t help, move the lights closer to the plants in increments and see if that helps. It can take a few weeks for any changes to benefit the plant so it may be a month or so before you dial it all in. If increasing day length and decreasing the distance between the light and the plants doesn’t help, your grow light may not be strong enough

    How do you know if your Droseras are getting too much light? Mine are under LEDs and look good but are pretty dark red, especially my D. graomogolensis. It has tons of dew and is flowering like crazy, just had its 5th flower open today.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před 2 lety +5

      They will usually turn very dark red when exposed to a lot of light and the leaves will shorten. That isn’t harmful to the plant! If you notice that they are growing successively smaller leaves; shrinking away, that’s a sign they could use less light. Another sign can be if they are quite red and suddenly stop producing dew; that’s too much light.
