My hair standed on end when you fell into the water and saw the squid. I have deep sea phobia and I can't see myself doing this quest! I actually returned Subnautica to Steam after playing 30 minutes. The fear is no joke, yo! ^^

I kind of feel like flying sharks and inexplicable boss-battle missions is cheap glamour content, rather than the depth of gameplay the game really needs. It might help generate some hype and sell some more copies, but...

Sounds about spot on too me, I mean c'mon, That's probably what we would all do if our game was going down the shitter and we were too lazy to actually put more time in and add super nice stuff. Lets settle for less.... As fucking usual with these game devs....
Also I think they're trying to keep up with The Forest, which has similar survival gameplay but also has a focus on horror and combat, and I guess since their gameplay is quite similar (instead of making it into a more hardcore survival simulator like they should) they're just adding stuff that you gotta kill. Which is fine but I agree that like each niche island having a realistic animal would be a better choice
