Journalists don't understand that you can't compare a Mirage made for fuel economy to a 650HP race car such as the one in my profile picture. In the real world, one makes much more sense than the other. The 3cyl sounds good, too!

I learned to drive with small Japanese cars with manuals back in the late 1970s. They were a lot of fun. The current Mirage would have been a super sophisticated sports hatch compared to those! I think I'd be perfectly happy with a new one with a five speed for a daily driver.

Mr M Exactly! This car can do what every other car can do and these car reviewers that hate it dont rate it for what it is. A bad car is a car that falls apart, is unsafe or unreliable. Thanks for posting this. Like you say, it's adequate power. If it were faster it would be a different and more expensive car. Re: 6th gear; I don't think a 6th gear would work because you'd have to be constantly down shifting. The engine is 78 hp and it probably only develops about 45-50 hp at 3k rpm. At 60 mph you need about 18 hp to overcome air friction alone, but at 85 mph that friction now requires about 45 hp to overcome. That doesn't include road/tire resistance and inclines. You need those higher revs at freeway speed to give you better throttle response while cruising. Your tach read 4k rpm at 80 mph, which is just the power you need to sustain that speed. Interesting to note that Porsche engineers geared my (sadly gone) 1969 911T indentically; in 5th gear you just had to double the tach reading (sort of) in top gear; 3 on the tach was 60 mph, 4 was 80 and 5 was 100mph. You needed 5k rpm to get near the max 110 hp to overcome all that air friction. "Double the speed, quadruple the air friction".

Thats decent enough, its a light car with a decent engine. It does what its designed to do. Might look at one of these as a cheap car for a while. Revs above 3k in fifth to maintain torque level, and sounds far better than a small four cylinder 5 speed at the same RPM, such as the last shape 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa, or Kia Rio. Both sound boomy and strained at 70 but three cylinders never do.
