    First shooter i was really able to have to myself after my big brother left the house. This game always had a nice feeling to it. Great music. Your team mates and enemy soldiers seemed more animated and acted more like people than faceless robots. I used to pay attention to the small things like the variation between uniforms and how many different faces there were instead of every enemy and teammate looking the same. The graphics are pretty good for the time as well. I used to really stress realism as a kid and knew it wasn't realistic how you faced hundreds of soldiers alone in most levels, but that didn't bother me in this game. The game still felt right. Almost like a movie with the great soundtrack. This game defined my childhood and and was a major player in the spurring of my interest in WW2.

      @ChillLetsPlays I never played that one. I never even played Allied Assault, which many seem to consider the gold standard. I was born in 97 so I was pretty young when those came out. My brother used to mock me for liking Frontline, because he felt as if things in that game were already repeats from previous Medal of Honor games. I’ve since watched review videos about those Medal of Honor games and see what he means, and it’s kinda sad that the series was already reusing ideas it had just used, guess that’s why some of the crew dipped out and creates the first Call of Duty🤷‍♂️. The ones I played as a kid were, Frontline, European Assault, and Airborne. Looking back I can see how flawed and glitchy some of those games are, hell, I even noticed it as a kid. I was just awestruck as a kid by the fact I was able to jump from a plane and land wherever I wanted. I liked how the graphics looked as well, but was never happy about there only being 6 missions. Another thing I noticed about the games, (I don’t know if it’s true for all of the series), but there seemed to be this thing where if the enemy soldiers were shooting at you, but the barrel of their gun was pointed in a position to where they’d be missing, the game would cheat for them and you’d be getting hit by their shots firing almost at a 90 degree angle or coming completely out the side of the barrel. I also noticed in Airborne, how If you saw enemy soldiers in the distance, whether they were in combat or at ease, if you zoomed in on them with a scoped weapon, they’d automatically turn to where you were and knew your exact position, even if you were in a church tower across the map.

      I think they should do a remake where they add a good reason for Jimmy to not kill Sturmgeist in the train level. Maybe Sturmgeist wounds Jimmy and he drops his weapon before he can open fire.
      It should also make your allies more useful. That’s one of the biggest flaws of old AI in all first person shooters, useless allies. Especially in the Arnhem Knights mission, it would be nice to have some good allied support.
      And finally, please make Gerrit land on the hay Ike he’s supposed to. I’m pretty sure he would break both his legs, if not be totally incapacitated and / or killed, from that fall. And show a cutscene of Jimmy pushing Gerrit over the railing, just for the laughs.

    • @1216shadow
      @1216shadow Před 6 lety +19

      some WWII tanks were actually somewhat vulnerable to machine-gun fire (like their passengers getting hit through the armor by any bullets getting through. Blowing up though, I agree that should only really happen, when hit by an explosive, a mortar, or another tank shell.) hence they needed to keep their distance and fire shells at MG nests. In WWI it was even worse, as any rifle round, could rip through their armor, and kill the passengers.

    I have this game to thank for my fascination with World War II. I was like 12 or 13 when I played Frontline, and before long I was obsessively reading books and watching movies like Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line and The Longest Day. I read that a big part of the reason Steven Spielberg wanted to start the series in the first place was to introduce a younger generation to WWII and genuinely teach them about it in an entertaining but informative and respectful way, and it's pretty safe to say that he succeeded with flying colors.
    I know Call of Duty basically took Medal of Honor's crown and ran with it, but the series really deserves a comeback. I think delivering lengthier, less on-rails campaigns than CoD with a greater focus on historical accuracy could help it stand out (I liked CoD: WWII's campaign, but it fumbled in the historical accuracy department in a few places and definitely got way too Hollywood at points *coughcough30secondtraincrashcoughcough*).
    Basically, make war first-person shooters for those of us who still love a good, meaty single player campaign.

  • @leafleap
    @leafleap Před 6 lety +135

    Jesus the AI in this game was unprecedented for its time, just look at 1:14:40 where the player throws a grenade at the guys around the campfire, one of the soldiers manages to catch it mid air and tosses it back at the player. How they react to things like grenades (kick em back, run away, pick up throw em back, even throwing themselves on the grenades to save their comrades) and how they react and use their surroundings is something we rarely see today.
    How they fight and move animation wise is also very impressive, Crouching down or going prone to get a better aim, rolling in prone to get a better position or avoid fire, sidestepping, swapping between hipfire and aimed fire.
    The dying animations and the way they react in pain from getting shot is also something to behold, often completely neglected in modern games or just replaced with ragdoll.
    Nowadays Ai will either just rush you mindlessly or sit behind something peeking out every once in a while.

      I don’t know if it’s just me but it seems like as the graphics + online capabilities of games improved, the attention put into the single player campaign declined. Back then, they had to create an immersive game to make up for the graphics and to keep the player engaged. Now you can just play team deathmatch or whatnot. I miss games with immersive details like this.

      The MoH Frotnline AI reminds me a little of the original Halo: CE AI. I remember people really praising the Halo AI for its ability to have elites dodge fire and charge the player when they decide its appropriate. I could not help but notice that the Frontline AI (I just got done playing some of the missions in PCSX2 before writing this) has a lot in common with the Halo AI.
      This game's AI is definitely not perfect, but I think that adds to its charm and dates the game in just the right way.

And Pointe du Hoq xas deadly because of the cliff they had to climb (Germans having very high ground, throwing nades and rocks down below on the tiny beach there no shelter pretty much etc...

    Probably the best Medal of Honor game made. Underground was pretty dope too.
    But Frontline was real quality. Lots of bugs and clipping issues, but nevertheless an excellent game.
    Fantastic level design. Challenging, well paced gameplay. Excellent sound and score. Immersive texture mapping. Beautiful modeling. Great enemy AI and death/hit animations. Atmospheric lighting.
    The development team probably never got the praise they deserved. They nailed it in terms of game design. I can't say the same for the MOH games that followed. Rising sun had some moments, but was just sub-par. Very corny at parts. European assault was something entirely different. I never finished that game. Only rented it once. It just didn't play or feel like MOH with the squad and rally system. I stopped playing MOH after that. I wish EA would revisit this series. I'd love to see a complete frontline remake on the unreal engine and with more polished higher quality modern mechanics. Give us more guns and the option of equipping our player with what we want before the level starts. Regenerating health, or a health pack system similar to bio shock or pubg. ADS, and corner leaning, although that seems like it was added to the HD reissue. Change up how loading/reloading works. When a player reloads, they sacrifice ammo remaining in the mag. Hide the bullet count in the mag too. And limit the player to something like 5 mags a gun.
    I suppose COD WWII will be something to look forward to.

    No cursors or markers telling you where to go. The closest you had was NPCs yelling or waving at you, and even so, it was up to you to interpret their meaning. Wish newer games would at least give the option of turning waypoints off or default hard mode everything is off. You only get waypoints in "I'm too you to die" mode.
