      Yes, I think she was very fond of old men, because they never rejected her in the way her real and adopted fathers did. The poignant scene where she learned that Mr shaibel had followed her career, made her realise he loved her like a father. And it was that realisation that motivated her to clean her act up. It made her more determined to win in honour of his memory. And the final scene was beautiful closure for her. She had won, and she felt peace and love amongst these old men. She was finally home.

      @MrQuestiel Před 3 lety +30

      It wasn't her father. Her mother was the issue. Her mother left her father hence the opening where her father said he kept looking for her. Heck her father even asked for Beth and her mother declined. After he gave up and moved on and had another family, her mother then comes to dump Beth on her. Problem is that unfortunately many men in that situation are bound by what the new wife wants. I suspect as is common that the new wife did not want Beth and thus the tragedy.
      The tragedy of Beth orphanage is actually the mistake of two women. Her mother and new wife. Not her father. Unless you want him to toss risk the new wife's drama because her mother finally saw her mistake.

      @@brandall101 Yea I get what the comment is trying to say. It's just not supported by the show. Again, the fact that based on the scenes presented, her mother walked out on her father not the other way round, makes using her father particularly as a bad basis for any feminist themes. That's like me using Donald Trump as "a shining example of men standing up for women". As great as the message is, the character doesn't fit.
      The closest character relationship that could be used to support feminist themes would be that between her adopted father and her adopted mother. But one could argue that's more about poor communication in relationships. i.e many relationships break because one partner, instead of voicing their dissent for something, goes along with what the other asks and leave in anger. This is happens often with pets. Her adopted father should have been clear he didn't want to adopt, rather than go along and then get upset later.

With a trainer or advisor, I might have gone farther but in those pre-Fischer days, the prizes in tournaments were not much and besides that, by the late 1960's I had to focus on college work. A better person would have paid back her sponsor and been a pen pal to a lonely old man and her friend back in the orphanage. As an adult, she should have realized that he did not reject her, but was ordered to stop interacting with her because the school felt he had encouraged her mis-behavior. It was nice that she sought out a man similar in appearance to mr schaible to play against in that moscow park in the ending scene. overall, i think it is a great mini series and will hold up well over time. I don't want a follow on series because i think they will take the character in poorly considered directions. I would rather see a spin off series made about her friend as she navigated her way from the orphanage through KSU in the sixties, ending up in law school. that was a nicely restored Corvair she was driving. my cousin restored that exact car back in the 80's. was squash really a thing back then?

      Yeah I had a hard time getting into the show with episode 1 initially because the orphanage and the circumstances of the girls seemed depressing to me. But the child actress really won me over. She did such a good job portraying the single minded intensity that only a child who has discovered something or is absorbed by it can have. The way she kept being driven away by Mr. Scheibel but kept coming back and insisting he teach her. "I'm not a stranger. I live here!" The scene where she had chocolate all over her face as she happily told Mr. Scheibel about her first victory was wonderful too. And it made the scene so much more potent when the adult Beth finds the bulletin board with her clippings.

    • @MarcoAshford
      @MarcoAshford Před 3 lety +1

      Beth is more likely to be with Townes than Benny.
      Benny and Beth were never connected, they are just 2 genius in their own head. As the other female character in the show said, Benny is a narcissist. Benny loves Beth to take down Russian chess players that he could not done himself, so he is obsessed trying to help her to fight for America. Benny does not love Beth for who she is, he was just in love with her talent and some lust, that's about it. He is just a lost soul himself, more of a prince in his own world. Benny and Beth both need to take some time to grow as a person that can step into a relationship.
      Townes on the other hand appreciates her beauty and class, he knows decent amount of chess so they still have plenty of common language. He is the more mature and respectable type, which could compliment Beth's insecure, pretentious type of queen personality. Oh wait, I just realized he maybe is gay or something...oh boy.
      I noticed some of the scenes showed Beth was fascinated about modeling and clothing, maybe it's her normal side of trying to be a beautiful regular woman. But also could be that she is type of person who can't accept failure and mistake, high maintenance, want attention, which is toxic in a relationship.
      Anyway, a mountain can't have 2 Kings (Benny and Beth), it has to be a king and a sidekick. I hope my words are clear enough. I really dig this show, I'm deeply connected to Beth in some way (many of us probably do during our teenage retaliation stage), but at the same time I'm sad for the men around Beth. Because she is most likely emotionally unavailable at this moment when she reaches her peak by beating Borgov. Remember there was a scene she asks the Russian Kid, what do you do after you become the world champion, then the kid got confused. That's where she is at, she needs more time to take care of her childhood issues, her twisted view of men from her birth mother and step mother.

    You know what it takes for a pawn to become a queen, the file has to be open, no pieces hindering it get to the 8th square., kind of symbolizing Beth's life, she had to remove all of obstacles to become the world champion and to take control of her life. Stopped taking the pills and alcohol. You can't create an open file without the help of other pieces, kind of like how Beth's friends helped her. Now, The queen's gambit, the move sheibel taught her, this requires a pawn sacrifice in order to take control of the center and gain dominant position to win... in this case, Mr sheibel is the pawn, he died, but I realized after sheibel died, that's when beth started to gain control of her life. Beautiful writing and what a fantastic show. Also that game with the old guy before the borgov game, the guy said " Brilliant recovery," talking about the game but reflecting Beth's recovery from struggling with addiction. A sequel would make no sense, the series is about a Pawn becoming a Queen. A Pawn usually takes seven squares (episodes) to become a queen. The death of Sheibel in the last and seventh episode was the moment when the Pawn was exchanged for the Queen. As per definition: a Pawn is a person used by others for their own purposes. The death of Sheibel was this psychic transformation to relieve Harmon from drug addiction, put the past behind her and become a Queen. When Harmon dresses like a white queen in Russia, she no longer needs drugs to see the chess pieces moving on the ceiling when she plays Borgov. On her way to the airport, it is reaffirmed that she is no longer a Pawn and will not become one again for the American government, she exits the car and mingles with her subjects.

I liked how she eventually captured the attention of the media and how the games that she played were hyped with all the fanfare, pomp, and sensationalism of a major sporting event too. I think that it put us, the viewers, in a position to rejoice in her victories and to share in her sense of vindication for overcoming the many trials, road-blocks, and negativity that she had faced along the way. And, just as when our favorite sports team wins, when she won, we won too.

    She sat down at the end to play Mr. Sheibal. He and Jolene were the only two people in her life who supported her unconditionally. If there is a season 2, I hope it focuses on Jolene's story. This was the 1960s chess world without the grandmasters of the period. A season 2 with the late 60s / early 70s civil rights world without the lawyers of the period - and Jolene doing the cases would be great.

    First of all, I cried my eyes out after she came across the photo of her and Mr. Schiabel. Second, pleeeeease don’t make a second season and ruin this show, it was perfect. There’s nowhere for it to go except down

    You die as an hero, or you live enough to watch yourself become villain. No, please don't make season 2. Don't mess up a great show

    I cried when she found Shaibel’s board with all her newspaper story clippings and that photo of her and him. And it’s touching how that’s what got her to get herself back together, stop drinking and get rid of the pills.
