- Author Laura Dodsworth reacts to actress Adjoa Andoh’s "terribly white" comment during King Charles' coronation.
Andoh is best known for her portrayal of Lady Danbury in Bridgerton and was a guest pundit during ITV’s coverage of the ceremony, saying: “We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony".
Laura says: "The idea that a family need to socially engineer itself right now to be more ethnically mixed is absolutely bizarre. It was a shocking and racist comment".

As anyone with a sociology degree will explain, people ordinarily don't choose potential marriage partners based on their ethnicity, but rather they usually select someone who is about their age, who shares common interests, & has a similar level of education, & is usually in the same or adjacent socio-economic class.
That's a bit too much like stating the obvious for me and really needn't need some useless degree to qualify one into making such a general observation. So, zero kudos points for that. I very much think this was just someone's general idea and it's been copied by many into being a factoid. The producers were obviously wanting diversity on this panel and they didn’t choose her on ability but chose her on colour. That’s the result they got. There are plenty of other more interesting and intelligent black women that could have sat on this panel, in fact there’s a whole host of interesting and intelligent people of colour that have the ability to make interesting observations and comments. In addition to the comments made, I also have the following thoughts: we have come to a point in history at which royalties are allowed to marry whom they love. The balcony is there for the royal FAMILY. How can someone be disappointed by the lack of diversity? Because it would imply that, as diversity would need to be considered, a member of the royal family can no longer marry for love. I thought we had left those time behind us.

I'm actually glad she said what she believes, because it is now out there for all of us to hear, regardless of support for the Royal Family or not (and to be clear: that is only for the people of UK to decide). But the rest of us billions around the world heard it too. And it's also a historical soundbite for future generations to witness as well. I'm heartbroken that it was thought and said as it shouldn't be said of any race or any family or even a royal family (and Royal families still exist in many different nations around this magnificent world of ours).

So many reasons have been listed here as to why I don't watch mainstream tv anymore. A black woman playing Anne Boleyn! a Cornish village is "too white"!! Some people need a good hard skelp as we say in Scotland! This is why I like old TV programmes, old adverts, cartoons and documentaries. All such things don't mention political correctness, health and safety or racism ever!!!

I think jealousy of other cultures achievements causes a lot of this. All cultures have good to be proud of. Focus on one’s own culture and share it without jealousy towards others.
I’d be amazed if it’s as low as 8% black representation on TV. I think Mike has it right that these media people live and work in London mostly where there is a much higher representation of BAEMs and think the rest of the country is the same.
Proportional representation let’s do a survey of how many blacks there are in this country then do some stats to work out the ratios. I think representation is fair and according to population.

Perhaps quite a few blacks aren’t interested in acting. Just like policing or working in councils or teaching where the populace is mainly white and it’s also probably because they don’t tend to have massive control issues and feel the need to be in authority, they are culturally different.
You will however see a huge proportions of blacks and Asians in the fields of medicine which I am happy about as they tend to study hard and make the best surgeons and Drs.
Also lots of blacks in engineering and architecture and music, the clergy, and the acting & entertainment, fashion & beauty world &lots of blacks working in high black areas like Birmingham, Brixton &Hackney councils or local policing areas. .
