      You say that you're not generating revenue outside of the partner program, or at least less so.
      This isn't really true, though. CZcams places ads on and monetizes videos outside of the partner program and even when people mark a video as not for monetization. I have a second channel where I just upload an old MMO's soundtrack and it has ads on it despite not even being 50% qualified for partnership (not that I would with that kind of channel). A two-and-a-half minute song will have before and after ads as well as at least 2 midroll ads nowadays. I get ads when I pull up my old TF2 clips I have unlisted on this channel.
      Your statement that they don't "in theory" put ads on such videos is entirely counter to what youtube directly states in their ad policy. Further, it's known that partner review is not usually done by humans. People already manipulate that system. It's one of the contributing factors to the weird Elsegate stuff.
      In fact, as I watched this video on my TV (rather than my usual place of my desktop) or any of your other videos, I get midroll ads.

  • @PracticalEngineeringChannel

    You are nuts doing all of this yourself. Truly can’t imagine the workload of researching, interviewing, writing, shooting, editing, and publishing two videos per week (with sponsorships!) without help. There are lots of options other than hiring a buddy. Consider what you could do with your editing time and whether it might offset the additional cost of having an editor ;)

      Another thought is that you could identify the Strengths that you bring to your channel and offer to provide those strengths to other creators who are just getting started or new. For example, if you like editing scripts to make them punchy (I believe this is one of Adam's strengths given his background at NPR) then you could provide that as a service to a team of young youtubers, and build small media network in that way. In this way, you get to do the work you enjoy doing while supporting a team of creators, or a community of creators.

    The real problem I see with CZcams mid roll ads is that it appears they don’t allow the content creator to put a marker in the video as to when to insert those ads. They wouldn’t be nearly as aggravating if they didn’t suddenly pop up midsentence sometimes even mid-word. If content creators could say this is a place for an ad because a thought is done, a chapter is done, whatever the case may be they would be more feasible. Can you imagine watching a television program and having the networks randomly insert ads in the middle of the program it would be infuriating.

    • @theworm9434

      You can put the mid roll ad wherever you want. A channel I watch, redlettermedia, does this. They edit their videos in such a way that the mid roll ad is at the natural end of a bit, joke, or point they’re making in the video, and they surround it with a couple of seconds of silence and a black screen.
      I’m pretty sure that’s the case, anyway. I’ve had premium for awhile, so I could be misremembering.

    Like your story, it was a side thing that started on a whim and became an unexpected success. I resisted the advertising route to "keep a free thing free" for a long time, despite the toll on my health and my financial wellbeing-likely out of fear-but I've been coming to terms with it and have started having some successes taking sponsors. It's nice to hear someone eloquently speak to the necessity of advertising for sustainability, but this can be difficult to communicate to an audience... At least for me with a very international audience and when communication isn't my #1 job. Anyway, I appreciate this episode as someone that also "does a thing". As I continue ageing towards my mid 40's, I'm really beginning to worry about the lifespan of my project and my own shelf life. adam, when you were discussing the death/transformation of the entertainment industry, i think you left out something really important. i don't think people just stopped directly paying for content because it stopped meaning something to them or they stopped enjoying it (although that may play some role for some people), i think it's just financially unrealistic for normal people nowadays. wages are not NEARLY keeping up with inflation. i would love to have subscriptions to the local newspaper, scientific american, and national geographic, as well as a shelf full of vinyls, but i'm a young, working class american. rent is BARELY in the cards for me. how could those things be? it's totally understandable to mourn what's been lost, but i think the conversation is a little hollow without diving to the source of those losses - our institutions that allow a select few to hoard unfathomable amounts of wealth while the rest of us don't even make a damn living wage.

    • @arijeanz
      @arijeanz Před rokem +5

      you hit the nail on the head!! i would love paying for more content/subscriptions, but i cannot really sustain that w an average paycheck. i pay for spotify (student plan), the occasional game on sale on steam, the even more occasional album cd, and my favorite magazine at the kiosk whenever i can afford it. i would to be able to buy more games, music, and even books!! i would to financially support my favorite CZcamsrs! but it's simply not feasible for me. and even then i spend quite a bit on media in my opinion since i don't go clubbing or eat a lot of takeout, which i would argue is the biggest money sink for people my age

      Valid point and a sad testament to the current economy. That being said, I agree that the demise of honest, unbiased, fact checked, objective professional journalism is frighteningly apparent and undermines the intention of the fifth amendment, now rebranded as "entertainment" with a title/name including the word "news" 😔

    • @borkbork4124
      @borkbork4124 Před rokem +1

      Everyone at my college shares their subscriptions/does family plans. Have one or two on your own can be a lot for working class and students. All I pay for is Spotify/Hulu, anything else is whatever my mom will buy a family plan for.
      Also, taking macro econ and marketing rn and I looove how they brush over how free market economies create wealth despairities. When someone says tax the rich, they ain’t coming after someone who makes a middle class salary, they are going after the richest people in this world that I will only ever be in the same room with if I was waiting on their table.

      Starting with cable TV in the 1980s, then the internet in the '90s, people nowadays don't realize how much disposable income has been gobbled up by these major media and communication corporations. It happened so fast that there was never any resistance to it, people were just embarrassed if they didn't have it so they signed up. It really is a big chunk of working-class income to pay for all of this every month, that's why buying records and subbing to magazines and newspapers became unsustainable. Free TV and radio used to make up so much of our entertainment, now we pay through the nose to be online all the time and carry the internet around on our phones.

    I really appreciated the discussion of the decline of local news. It's a really big deal, and one that I think most people, especially younger people, aren't even aware of. Even in relatively large cities and states that still have some local news coverage, there's a lot less of it and it's much lower quality than it used to be.

    • @svr5423
      @svr5423 Před rokem +2

      I find that I can get local information, both news and other, a lot easier than, let's say, 30 years ago.
      On the other hand, I have really come to dislike journos because of their corruption, activism and general failure to research anything.
      If I ask a question in our local town's facebook group, I get better news and insights about a topic than from any journo.

    • @level10peon
      @level10peon Před rokem +1

      @@svr5423 I follow journalism fairly closely, and while I wouldn't say there's no corruption or activism in journalism, I think most people vastly overestimate those as causes for problems in modern journalism. The real issue is that the business model for journalism collapsed, so that there are far fewer people cover things (especially at the local level), those that do are likely to be underpaid and thus inexperienced (because most people over 30 needs to be able to support a family), and the only way to stay viable is to create lots of content to feed Google/social media/etc. on a low budget.
      The journalists aren't corrupt or lazy (mostly), instead they're being forced to write an article every day, sometimes multiple a day, while being paid crap wages. They simply don't have the time or support to do well-researched articles, often. Before the internet, when newspapers were in much healthier financial shape, journalists could be paid a living wage to write one article a week, or even less often, and had the time really research and report out a story in-depth.

    • @svr5423
      @svr5423 Před rokem

      @@level10peon Thing is, everybody nowadays can cover things, so the amount of stuff covered - even on a local level - is much higher than it was before.
      If there is an event in my town, I'm no longer required to learn from it from the local newspaper. The city would publish, the participants would publish, the venues would publish, there are webcams and dozens of people posting photos and writing about their experience, so I can now get a much clearer and nuanced picture of whats going on. I can also contact many of those people, which usually wasn't possible with journalists.
      And for all things professional or complicated, we now have subject matter experts that can self-publish and that use more complete and understandable language and cater to the interested audience rather than generate clickbait designed to be consumed in a few seconds. Especially in IT and aviation, I see a huge difference between journos and actual experts.
      The level of activism and corruption may vary depending on the topic and the publisher.
      For example, as a native German speaker, I nowadays follow primarily English news, because the German news are full of grammatically incorrect word salad that is hard to understand. And that is primarily owned to activism.
      As another example: Since Gamergate, I also do not follow gaming journalism (which was so cool when I was little!) and professional reviews of other cultural products (films, series, music, books) anymore. It's empty of content and full of pandering. And you can often see the disconnect between the "critics" reviews and the audience reviews who are the actual consumers.
      In my view, the swamp needs to be drained. The remaining journalism is often following an extreme activist agenda (those people work for almost free, since it's their "duty" - they do not need to write fullfilling articles or feed a family) and/or just write rage-inducing clickbait designed to stir up emotions and pit people against each other.
