COMPLETE OVERLAND GUIDE FOR JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK (Hikes, Off-road, Camp on BLM land)

  • On the evening of January 30th, 2024, the Wife and I made this spontaneous decision to spend 2 nights and 2 days in Joshua Tree National Park so that we could do some hiking. We threw some food and water in the Honda and took off at 10PM. We arrived in the BLM lands south of the entrance and dispersed camped (for those that don't know, this is free camping, with no running water, bathrooms. Just a lot of freedom and privacy).
    This was a great way to start our trip. We didn't have to worry about morning rush hour traffic, we were right where we needed to be.
    We did the Heart Rock / Arch Rock hike, Halls of Horror and the Barker Dam Hike. Rather than make a video of just these 3 trails, I decided to make a comprehensive Hiking / Off-road compilation guide for you all.
    Also, with Valentines day right around the corner, I thought sharing the Heart Rock Hike would be special for some of you couples out there!

    This is awesome. I politely request a video discussing overlanding in a wagon vs midsized SUV vs. a midsized Truck.

      That’s a good recommendation! People have been asking me on instagram if the trails in this video are doable in an AWD. A comparison would be perfect in Joshua Tree. The trails are rough enough where vehicle ground clearance and capability would really make a difference.

    I need to explore JT more. It's rhe nearest national Park to me and I don't take advantage of it.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I’ve neglected it as well. Sure, I’ve been to the park over a dozen times, but I didn’t give the park that much attention, I didn’t go on the hikes, I’d just stick to Old Dale road and haven’t attempted to branch out and explore the other mines. In the month of January, I’ve been to Joshua Tree 3 times, and have focused on the hikes. I love this national park more and more, and now I have the more “secret” things to experience. Before it gets too hot, I want to hike a total of 10 miles to visit this house built into stone. Lemme know if you want to join.

    I think that JT area is one of the most underrated parks!! So much to explore!! Mines galore!!! I wish we had more time to explore all the mines there before we moved. Definitely lots of hiking there . Nancy and I hiked 1 trail I cant even remember the name but it was so fun, it was close to the south entrance. Keep up the good work and hiking!!! I need to do this this year and I am working on finding good spots to hike here!!

      Oh Wow!! Well, this guide will still help you out. You can dispersed camp northeast or south of Joshua Tree. If you can’t land a reservation at one of the Joshua Tree campsites, it makes a good option.
      DO NOT camp at the RV campsites, it’s a miserable experience. It would be so much better to camp in BLM (bureau of land management) land. There’s plenty of dirt roads accessible by car.

      Good place to start! Also, protect that oil pan and improve under body aerodynamics with a Nolo skid plate. That’s the single most important plate! Well besides the catalytic converter anti theft plate (depending on where you live)

    Hey Joh, do you use VCM disabler product at all? Something that turns off the cylinder deactivation system built into these Hondas?
    And/or Haz or Mechanic mentioned anything about the durability of these engines with that built in VCM system?

    Can regular or stock awd can make it there too?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 4 měsíci

      To the BLM camping areas, yes, absolutely. Even cars can camp out there, just have to watch out for deep sand. As far as the 4x4 trails, they are rated moderate, which can be tough for stock AWDs. I wouldn't recommend it, but with skilled driving, stacking rocks, and help from a friend with a 4WD it can be possible. 2:57 is the best example of what can happen, even with a modified AWD with 10 inches or ground clearance.

    How has all of your upgrades to your vehicle effect your fuel economy?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 4 měsíci

      They definitely affect MPG and range. I was able to drive 130 miles home from Joshua Tree at 22 mpg, but that's cruising at around 70 mph. When I'm on the highway with a speed limit of 80 mph, MPGs will plummet to about 17-18 mpg highway. With the larger 33 inch tires and added weight from all the gear, stop and go city driving will take a big hit. I'd say I'm at about 15ish mpg city.
      The Passport AWD is rated for 19 city / 24 highway, but people report getting 27 mpg highway in the real world. I only expected 24 mpg, so getting anywhere from 17 to 22 mpg highway on my long trips, I'm totally fine with. I am thinking of replacing my cut bumper with OEM for better aero.
