I found this book underated although it is far better than Anne Grey. Anne Brontë surprised me a lot with this book. The main character is a man...very good novel.

I lost count of the number of times I watched The Garden scene (I don't want to spoil, but those familiar with the story can guess what I mean). The first time I saw it I had tears uncontrollably rolling down my cheeks and I was sniffing like little baby lol.

It’s always strange to me when people don’t like Emma. I love it. I think she experiences more growth than most of Jane Austen’s characters. My personal favorite is Sense and Sensibility (which is hilarious), but Emma ties with Pride and Prejudice for second place. I ADORE The Musketeers and The Count. I never know which is my favorite. I've actually read most of these classics within the past two or three years. Loved Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (my favorite classic), and thought Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was great. Her sister Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights has great atmosphere but all the characters deserved to undergo live autopsies. Only read Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte, thinking it just OK. I thought Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov was amazing, as well as Leo Tolstoy's morality play Anna Karenina, who I alternately pitied and thought had it coming. I felt that Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, was an exciting adventure story except for the extensive details about whaling, which slowed it to a belly-crawl. Ever since I went to Prince Edward Island in 2006 and found out that I'm a second cousin twice removed of Lucy Maud Montgomery, I wanted to read Anne of Green Gables. I read a Puffin Classics edition I borrowed from my local library, from March 9-12, 2018. A great novel of childhood but pretty sappy. I wondered if many of Anne's listeners had to have their ears surgically reattached because she talked them off.

I think horror and science fiction would have existed without Mary Shelly, but I'm very grateful to her for getting the ball rolling on those genres.
The Three Musketeers has a big plot hole as I recall. Like, D'artagnan becomes a musketeer twice. It seems Hugo forgot it already happened. I enjoyed the book anyway though, but Dumas does have long stretches of book where very little happens. I found The Count of Monte Cristo got a lot slower after Edmond escapes prison. Honestly, many of his books seem padded to me.I don't think I've ever heard of a high school kid reading Chaucer. You're hard core on the difficulty spectrum!

The books from your top that are not on my favourites are the ones I haven't read yet xD Except for the Three Musketeers. I like it, but it's not a favourite. The Count of Monte Cristo is much better and I need to reread it.

I have read, and enjoyed, a few of those books. And I've started reading Emma but I think I'm only one or two chapters in and then I started re-reading the Prydain Chronicles instead. I will get back to it though. Emma is still waiting in bed for me to pick her up. Ok, maybe not "in" bed, but right next to the bed ;)

If you love the Three Musketeers, you owe it to yourself to read the whole thing! There's 2-5 more books depending on how the publisher splits it up. They're all good, but it doesn't get REALLY good till the last one. Very sweet and profound, dripping with ennui.

What is your favorite edition to read from? Are there any that you'd recommend for not just collectors but that either have great notes or great translations?

I just got into reading and I thought I should diffenetely read some classics . I started reading Pride and prejudice few days ago and I keep getting confused I don't know who's talking but I think it's because I read it as an E-book so I'm gonna buy the physical book. I have a long reading list and almost all the books mentioned here are on the list. I hope by next summer I'd read all of them.

Awwww no Wuthering Heights? (sorry I'm a Bronte fangirl lol). Emma is my fav Jane Austen novel too. I wrote my Bachelor of Arts dissertation on Dickens and my fav book is Bleak House as well! My Master's dissertation was on Oscar Wilde, so personally I would have mentioned 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' which is definitely in my top fav 5 list of Classics. Have you read it? I highly recommend it.

I’m going through all these book reviews sites. I see top books really are different for men vs women. As a guy, naturally expected top books would match regardless of gender.
I liked your list. It included my all time favorite...Three Musketeers! It’s very French. It’s unique. None of the characters could ever exist anywhere but France.
Since I’m a guy, my other two top books are Brothers Karamazov and The Idiot.

If you're looking for a good audio reading of A Christmas Carol check out the one by naxos read by Anton Lesser, he has a great speaking voice. In fact Anton Lesser reads a lot of Dickens' works if you search for him on Audible.

I think it’s so cool that your family would sit and read together on Christmas Eve! I don’t come from a family of readers, so that kind of Christmas coziness is out of my reach for now!
I loved Frankenstein as well. It’s such a great read and so different from most film versions!

Sam Sa’adi - good Q! I’ve realized translation is all important on these classics. I would like to see more on topic...I usually resort to fishing around on internet to get buried articles in internet.

I agree with you about “Tenant”. It also is a feminist manifesto for the time dealing with the reason why women should have been able to get a divorce from abusive husbands. It also was a damning indictment against marriage for money. Her creepy husband was sweetness until after the honeymoon, and then his real personality emerged. Helen was such a strong woman considering the burdens she had to bear.
