  • 3.46 The electric motor exerts a torque of 800 N ? m on the steel shaft ABCD when it is rotating at a constant speed. Design specifications require that the diameter of the shaft be uniform from A to D and that the angle of twist between A and D not exceed 1.58. Knowing that tmax = 60 MPa and G = 77 GPa, determine the minimum diameter shaft that can be used.

    Hello sir, why u assuming that 800N.m is clockwise?

      You can see that when you cut the shaft between AB so total torque on right is 800 N.m which is counter clock wise so inorder to keep equilibrium Tab should be 800 N.m clockwise.

      Ok I have checked you can see the larger diameter we selected will be more safer as compared to smaller one. That's why we choose larger diameter. ❤
