Thank you. I've found myself overwhelmed with waking up early for homeschooling an 8 and 6 year old, pregnant, from scratch cooking, cleaning, food preservation, sewing, laundry, dishes, making natural medicine, along with getting my husband ready for work in the middle of the day and then staying up very very late to make sure he has a warm meal after a long day of work. Can't have the kids just run outside and play because we live in a small apartment in an extremely dangerous neighborhood. I am going to bed sometimes at 5 am and waking up at 8 am. I am so exhausted and trying to do all of this because every one of the things on my list absolutely need to be done and yet....oh my. I sometimes just want to break down and cry. I love my life and my family and so I continue onward. If I could just find a more efficient way to be succesful on each endeavour, or at the least be able to have a moment where I can do something frivolous like making a christmas wreath or sew a skirt...with out feeling like I am neglecting something or someone.... That is what I am searching for. Guess that may just be a dream but I have an ear always open for a suggestion that may work. Hmmm... Saying it out loud is making me feel a little....mind blown.
If you do not take care of yourself, you will have nothing left for those around you and eventually you will pay the toll with health problems. Prioritizing sleep and nourishing foods for you and your family would be a great first step.
I have been loving the homeschool episodes! I live in a state where educational hours must be tracked by subject (being a second generation homeschooler I am well aware of what activities I can use to count toward educational hours 😉). Both my husband and I work full-time because we enjoy the work and need the money, so it was a comforting reminder from Angela that parent-child homeschool-specific interaction can be done in the evenings.

I love homeschooling. I love that I can tailor it to every child, helping them find their strengths and letting them know that they don't have to measure up to others. Recognizing that not every kid will love reading, not every kid will love art, etc and that's ok. Life skills are so important and I definitely include that in "school" life. Thanks for these videos! :)
Oh my goodness when you just said about being out and about and people randomly say “why aren’t you in school?!” That just hits home! We get that so often!!

I homeschooled my three in the 90's, and curriculum was always an issue. I primarily used Abeka, with little bits of Bob Jones. Back then it wasn't easy to find homeschooling networks in Wyoming and Colorado, and often found we were on our own, but in the end I had three well educated children, who grew to love education. All three have multiple degrees in varying subjects at this point (my youngest is 40).

Great podcast, thanks for taking the time ❤ definitely eases my concerns of homeschooling in the coming years (oldest is turning 5 soon). I think it’s important we realize we kinda have to “unlearn” the methods and system of our own public school experience. I always loved school growing up and did well but I also remember hating all the elements of public school that you can ditch if you’re homeschooling so I think that’s really cool and I look forward to seeing where our journey goes as the years progress
Yes!!!! The daughter with the Abeka math struggle, that was literally me!!!!! Now I'm a married adult, and my husband (another homeschooler) is encouraging me!😅 Learning that it helps having different curriculum and not being nervous about teaching math when we have kiddos! He was taught with a different one, and it definitely is more helpful with my mindset!

My two oldest kids are lurning disabled and in 2020 when the school shut down i had to stop working and home school/with school helping and I really did like it and I realized I can do it if I need to. My son did really well they tested him and he was doing better then he had on his last test but my daughter was going backwards because it just was not working for her at all.

Ok, so I have some comments a questions. First, Lisa looks like Scarlett Johansson and even sounds like her! Now that I've gotten that out of the way 😂. I loved this video. Full of useful information. I was wondering if either Lisa or Angela (or even someone reading) could point me in the right direction of a good writing curriculum (preferably online) for my 8th grader? I can grade her writing, but it is so hard for me. Partially because she seems to think my critique of her work is just judgmental, and partially because some times I wonder if I'm expecting too much from her. So, I think it would be better for both of us if she could do an online writing class. Any suggestions?

I was homeschooled, and we used Singapore Math. Math needs consistency, but I found that style very good for learning, and I was always at the top of my math classes in college (even though I hated math growing up).

I’ve been working my way through Learn Math Fast per Angela’s recommendation previously. We’re finishing up book 4 and it’s been amazing. My student (I tutor) went from second grade level math to ninth grade level math in about 9 months. It’s been great, thank you!

Great video! So important to really sit down and focus on your children's needs as they are growing up. Understood from the video that it isn't about doing a specific type of schooling to raise a child into a productive adult. Instead, it's about teaching them the right skills to be successful adults, and that is not something that follows a specific type of script; children and their parents are different, so making sure that as a parent, time is being taken to learn the best way to help your kid have values, enrichment, and coaching to make positive decisions as they grow up helps them immensely. When growing humans, remembering that one day they will be independent and out there paving their own road to happiness is critical because they will need to learn skills to be successful in making life work for them.

Abeka did not work for any of my 3 (out of 5) neurodivergent kids. Abeka sucked the life out of my kids…and me. 😣 Math-U-See worked well for my older two and The Good and The Beautiful has worked well for my youngest. I would highly recommend not doing all of the review problems for a child who struggles in math if they get a concept. TGTB is divided into the new concept and review so it’s really easy to cut some problems off. We have the Learn Math Fast curriculum and it’s really good. One of my older kids used it for a time to brush up on math prior to going to college then she decided that she needed to switch to something else for a more focused review. She said it was really good though. It just wasn’t what she needed at the time. I might be using it later for my youngest who struggles in math. Great podcast. Thank you!
Regarding the teaching of maths, it is unfortunate there has been such a large focus on rote memorization within the school system. It does have its place though. Rote memorization primarily helps with the speed needed to not hinder the learning in subjects such as finances or various sciences. In my opinion, math should be used more as a tool for teaching things like logical reasoning and critical thinking. Don't get too focused on only teaching number manipulation, because it can become frustrating.
I am not far enough in my homeschool journey to have much to say on curriculum (my oldest is only 2), but I was a math tutor for many years and this is what I have found that has helped students the most:
Yes, real world applications can help a lot. Use things like finances, physics/engineering, baking, to give examples of how to apply different concepts. Even general spatial reasoning can help with geometry.
Another thing that can help is actually word based logic problems because it gives a break from number crunching, helps with that logical reasoning skill, it can build the ability to pay attention to details, and so much more. Then you can go back to the numbers and it is so much easier to understand what is happening with them.

On the perfectionist kids, I try to teach them that failure & mistakes are super important and actually many times a desired result because they help us to learn faster and build a better product. For example: Google will throw out several "products" at the same time and not fully formed so they can learn quickly and get results faster so they acheive better results vs taking years of research and development in the effort to out out a perfect product just to find it doesn't work in the real world. That's years of time spent and money on perfection and it was for naught. So we try to celebrate quick failure in many things. Obviously we need to try to get the right answer or add the correct amount of some ingredient for tried and true processes, but many times perfection is exactly the opposite of what we want.

My daughter struggled so much with Abeka math! Teaching Textbooks online works so well for her now, we've used it for four years. She had to go up a grade level because TT can seem "behind" compared to Abeka but it's been 100% worth it to not have anymore tears over math!

I homeschool. I have also taught in the public school system. While I love the flexibility of homeschooling it's sad to hear comments about the public schools spending less then two hours a day on actual instruction. That isn't true. Many states have laws on the number of instructional hours required in public schools. Ours is 6 hours a day.
There is absolutely no way that you are instructional teaching 6 hours in a 6-6/12 hour school day!!!

As a mom of 2 littles, I am seriously considering homeschooling because my son will be ready for preschool next year and I feel as though I need to make a decision now because if I do it I want to to be right from the start. For many reasons I want to homeschool but what it comes down to is living a simpler life and creating that bond with them and raising them to be good people without outside influences that could do harm to them physically and emotionally. A also feel as though having kids allows us to have a second childhood because were in it right beside them re-learning everything and viewing things with a new perspective. As much as I want to do it, I worry that I wont be able to financially afford to not work in todays society. A one income family is very difficult these days.
If homeschooling is in your heart, go for it! You can always reevaluate if you find yourself broke down the road. But something tells me that if it's the right choice for your family, God will provide 😊
Be encouraged,God will provide..This is our 3rd year homeschooling and He has provided all our needs. He is too good.He will do the same for your family too. 🙏 Praying for you .
I agree finances are tight with one income, but it can work if you prioritize homeschooling. We moved to a state with lower cost of housing and property taxes. We have a single income and live comfortably without a lot of extras. We just prioritize me staying home to raise and school the kiddos! I hope everything works out for your family 😊
Keep in mind there are lots of hs moms who who work outside the home and figure out how to make it all happen when needed. Also lots ways to make income from home too

My 5 year old and I are earlybirds. We do all of his formal school subjects at 6-8am. He wants to read and write and do math with me then. Teenager talks to me while I’m up in the late night with a newborn. We text, Google, use apps on car trips. The teenager is learning about WW2. Dad is a war buff. So sometimes we call dad at work at 10pm for clarification.

I love how Generations curriculum starts off Maths with the purpose of glorifying God ... God is a God of systems and order and Maths reflects who God is and discovering that is an act of worship. They highlight the Mathematical concepts in the Bible... I like that idea of using that as a foundation.
Competency is so important!! It’s so difficult to talk to the younger generation especially in professional settings they don’t even know how to talk to adults.
Talking to adults is an important skill!

I love your content but I do wish there was a larger presence of content creating, homeschooling Dads out there because try as I might I can never fully understand anecdotal parallels between homeschooling and breastfeeding. Just as an aside, undergraduate philosophy majors often go to law school, among many other specialty fields. Having a philosophy degree is like getting a degree in professional rhetoric. Many people will major in philosophy while also achieving requirements for medical school or graduate school in history, archeology, linguistics. . etc.

Lisa....look into Life of Fred math. It's math in story form and written for real life scenarios. Our middle school kids use it and it's fantastic....especially if your children enjoy reading. The stories are funny and keep interest. This is our 24th year of homeschooling. I've graduated five children (with 6 more to go). We use Abeka to start (usually thru 3/4th grade) because I believe it sets and excellent foundation. Then, we move to Life of Fred, then on to Teaching Textbooks for high school. Each child has been a little different depending on their inclinations and strengths/weaknesses, but this has been our routine for the most part. I've had a child stay longer in Life of Fred, and I've had a child move to Teaching Textbooks a little sooner...just depends. See if you can borrow one of the L of F books and see what you and you child think. This was a great podcast with lots of helpful information!

Hello, I am from Mexico and most schools there have two "shifts" a morning and evening, and you can choose wich one you want to go if there are abailable spaces. Not sure if any other countries do that.??
I don't know if that is done in schools in the US or not...

Hi! Asking whoever feels like answering! What is a good curriculum for kids who just want to get their work done fast and go on to other things, do it well enough at the time but have poor retention because they already got it done?
I don't have a curriculum for you, but long term retention is based on repetition and multiple experiences with a concept over time. So I would look for curriculum that often circles back to previously taught concepts (love Saxon math for this reason) OR I would think about what other experiences you can pull in that touch on those same concepts (i.e interesting shows/documentaries, local museums that have one off classes, friends that work in that field who would love showing your kid some hands on things, parks department classes, books on the topic, etc.) The latter is more time consuming but potentially more effective too

My grandkids go to public school during the day, and then we spend 1-2 hours in the evenings TEACHING them their homework assignments. Their prek-3 grade. So why can't homeschooling be done in the evening. At least their entire waking hours aren't taken up with "school assignments " that's my soapbox rant, I will be quiet now.
My oldest son started out in public school. He constantly struggled with his homework. He would say "I haven't learned any of this, the teacher didn't teach us this.." and I would say " that's impossible, your teacher wouldn't send you home with homework that hasn't been taught, homework is extra practice". This went on for awhile.. well, we go to parent/teacher conferences, and the teacher said "The homework we assign is the concepts we will work on the next day. We send it home for the parents to help their children learn the lesson so the children will have a understanding of what we're doing". She basically told me you get to homeschool your child in the evenings so that tomorrow I can just hand them worksheets and not have to teach. That moment solidified my decision to homeschool. And also, like Angela said and I have been saying this for years as well, why would I send my children to a school system that left me feeling incompetent/like I'm not smart enough to teach/follow a curriculum. Like Angela, I laced up my bootstraps and got to work learning along side my children on any subject/area I don't feel equipped in, plus, we have Google and CZcams and a million other resources to help us figure out anything we don't know. We homeschool for a few hours in the morning and then we are free the rest of the day, my children are able to explore so many interests, and sharpen skills. I hope your family considers homeschooling.😊
