I appreciate the podcast but it's striking to me how UK media only uses drag queens to talk about trans issues which seems to generate the idea in people's minds that I'm a drag queen when I'm not.
This is something I've noticed too. When I was in uni and starting to try and talk to friends about potentially being trans - they just said 'Oh I love Drag Race!' as though it was the same thing. Back then - the idea of performing womanhood for entertainment and laughs was horrifying to me - who just wanted to not be stared at, and go about their day quietly.
Yes. Definitely creates/cements a “blurred narrative” for those uninterested in stepping out of their ignorance/bigotry. With media that is trans positive, they should definitely be speaking with trans folk, and drag artists, and trans drag artists.
However, with the antagonistic “side” of the media, sadly the majority, I appreciate cis drag acts standing up and “taking the brunt”. I wish I could say “as long as trans folk were invited first” but I do not trust broadcasting bodies to even ask in a “non damaging” way. They can’t even manage “neutral”!
Side note; I am always here for more Divina!
It doesn't help that so many times when you ask trans people to talk about things they either refuse or go off at everyone and weaken their points with ridiculous statements.
its only ignorance generally but it can mean the inquisitive learn the nuances ,
most press is bad press no matter who you are , if the media tax dodging moguls want folk to be anry at you they will
but those who see the media and question it , they wise up
Pod save the UK have had some good interviews you may be more comfortable with.
Trans obsession is another distraction tactic. Got way bigger issues that are objectively more important.
The amount of coverage this topic gets is absolutely bonkers.
in typical fashion its such a tiny minority... like what is it ~1% of the population?
nevermind how difficult it is as an identity, from getting healthcare to the various rights hampered by being trans
@@ince55ant I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the true figure is about 5-10% if we removed the barriers you mention (and had a slightly more expansive definition, just like how we include bi people nowadays but back then most people only thought in terms of straight and gay).
We have to cover it to push back, silence is deadly.

She has said she’s part of the Trans community.
I love Davina and her advocacy on trans issues. However can't @PoliticsJOE scrape up an actual transperson to provide commentary on the trans culture war? You're weak here, @NovaraMedia have a trans journalist.

@@SquierMarr Just because she has a five o clock shadow, raised suspicion, I thought she might be a trans.

Please stop using drag queens to discuss trans issues.
I am a trans woman 24/7, this isn't a costume or act that I can don or drop on a whim & having drag queens speak on trans issues reinforces the idea in anti trans minds that me being trans is an act.
There are highly articulate trans people out there like Katy Montgomerie, Shon Faye & more who can properly represent trans people
Isn’t Divina non-binary?
@@willowtdog6449 they may be but the average person falling for Daily Fail headlines won't understand that nuance.
If Davina's being introduced as a drag queen then that's what average Joe public will latch onto which will feed into the already present anti trans bias.
I’m trans and a queen. I don’t think we should be making any compromises towards daily fail readers and we stumble into “pick me” territory when we say as trans people, that we don’t want queens representing us. We all share a common enemy and are fighting the same prejudices.
It's got nothing to do with "pick me", it's about sending clear, informative messages to counter the daily deluge of anti trans propaganda being pushed by pretty much all corners of UK media.
Section 28 & the years of anti gay propaganda leading up to it was bad, what's happening now is far worse (look for the report "Tip of the iceberg" to see the amount of right wing money being ploughed into the anti trans movement).
it says in the title "drag queen slams..." there's no mention there that they're trans.
I only learned that part when I read it in comments, it was pretty much glossed over & ignored for the entire video.
This isn't the first time Pol Joe has done this sort of thing.
When you're fighting a powerful propaganda machine you need to pay attention to it & ensure the rare times we get to speak that our messaging is crystal clear & not feeding into the propaganda.
Everyone here, please be aware that Wes Streeting, the Secretary of Health and Social Care, has just moved to ban puberty blockers permanently.
That’s a great point at the end. The NHS should just say “we’ll support you if you ever change your mind” rather than wasting years going “we need to make 100,000% sure you won’t change your mind”. Because that’s how we deal with issues with hip or knee surgery - contingent support plans, not trying to make sure only Truly Really Sure people get new hips.
Not to mention it's a fraction of a percent that change their mind, and those are nearly all due to external pressure and not being accepted.
It's my body, I know what I want and need to do to it. I don't need to be infantilised and have to prove myself.
@@Xentillus The general public really does not realise that it is quite literally low double digits in the UK, it's a fraction of a percent of a fraction of a percent of less than 1% of the population.
In a study of 3,398 trans patients under the NHS' care, only 0.09% (3 people) detransitioned with no intention to retransition. Of that 0.09% it is statistically unlikely that most had even begun medical transition yet (given how absurdly long it takes and difficult it is to be able to start it under the NHS), and had only undergone social transition, which is obviously entirely reversible.
The amount of permanent detransitioners, those who detransition because they aren't trans - rather than the overwhelming majority of detransitioners who do so only temporarily due to being forced to by transphobia in their living situations, who then go on to retransition later once safe - is vanishingly small (and I will add, should obviously be treated with all the care required to undo any medical transition in the case they've had any).
Alas, we have to pay the price instead by being forced to wait for near-decade waiting lists + years of jumping through ridiculous hoops to prove ourselves to access treatment so we can simply live our lives, just in case of a regret rate lower than literally every surgery there is. (Which I must add, leads to the deaths of trans kids/teens, stuck trying to get treatment).
@@treeaboo On top of all of this, trans people as a whole have a suicide rate considerably above the national base line. But when you break it down, all of that is concentrated in "trans people who are unable to transition or access the help they need". Post transition the rate is back down to baseline (or lower). We live in such a society that is so actively punishing and excluding us that people (including kids) are taking their own lives at an astonishing rate.
I consider myself so fortunate to have a support network and the funds to be able to access at least some private healthcare and therapy, I dread to think where my life would be in 6+ years on a waiting list with no help.
I'm really sorry but the background noises, in these interviews, are really distracting and personally give me a headache 😢
i was just going to comment on that! so unprofessional

Divina the legend. Speaking truth that so many of us know but many don’t say on a public platform.
Trans people need to be given the right to express what they want to express the government needs to be on the side of trans people
Males aren't female, and males do not belong in female-only spaces or activities regardless of how they feel inside, how weak they are compared to other males etc. To support the erosion of all female sex-based rights and protections is blatant misogyny.
Please get Divina on again, absolutely amazing polticial commentary, so well informed, brilliantly explained and also pretty fabulous too 👏👏👏
Has politicsjoe ever had an actual trans person on their show?
She identifies as Trans as well as a drag queen.
It amuses me that the most vocal pearl-clutchers are the same folks who grew up screaming with laughter at Larry Grayson and Gloria from It Ain't Half Hot Mum 😂😂😂
The way Trans people have been treated as of late is absolutely appalling. The LGBT community has existed for thousands of years across the world, in every civilisation since the birth of the homo-sapians (human species). They played an enormous part in many ancient civilisations. In fact homosexuality, asexuality, gender transition / dysphoria is common in pretty much most species that have ever existed since the planet earth was formed. Going back to the human species, in the western so called Christian world, boys wore pink and girls wore blue right up until the beginning of the 20th century. In fact the word boy meant servant. More importantly, boys were called naive-girls and girls were called gay-girls. As far as gender, masculinity, femininity in a social context there is no such thing, it doesn’t exist and every human in that sense is “fluid”. In short, equal rights are universal and we all need to come together and just live.
Males aren't female, and males do not belong in female-only spaces or activities regardless of how they feel inside, how weak they are compared to other males etc. To support the erosion of all female sex-based rights and protections is blatant misogyny.
20 mins and the truth is spoken!
I appreciate what she says. it would be nice for platforms like this to feature actual trans people talking about trans rights and their experiences, rather than drag artists, supportive as they are.
its not a drag artiste that has made so many of us poorer , its not a drag artiste that has let society crumble into bleak austerity ,

I love Divina. I met them for the first time at DragCon this year and had a great conversation about queer rights and the filthy tories.
I'm bored with this good bye.
Two points:
I always respond to questions about me being trans in terms if race.
If we look at "Gender critical views" in terms if race, people stop asking because it looks racist.
"So what do you think of gender critical people?"
"I have no views on Race Critical people."
"No, I'm talking about the transgenders."
"Sorry, I'm not a PoC so can't speak for the black community."
Bigotry against trans people is only slightly off from being racist, antisemitism, ableism, etc.
Second point: please someone stop her laughing!
@@StephMcAlea Agreed on both counts! 😄
It's an emotive subject with no clear black and white answers - therefore it's perfect clickbait and distraction fodder for grifters.
There are clear black and white answers.
Discrimination is not an opinion to hold. The medical care of transpeople has been proven over and over again to be safe.
Taking into account that yes, there can be side effects, but that those are considered a well-known, well-discussed (with the transperson and the parents of said transperson if the transperson is a minor) trade-off compared to not-treating someone.
The mere fact you are saying this is a subjective subject with no clear black and white answers, clearly shows how a part of the political spectrum has been successful in abusing the knowledge vacuum most members of the general public has.
They created the idea that there are both sides to this issue and that they should both be taken equally serious.
Which is simply not true: Transpeople are getting murdered, physically beaten, harassed, bullied. Not cis-people. Cis-people are only asked to simply be tolerant, exercise a form of respect. But in their eyes, that is perceived as a threat, as something that means they are going to loose some of their rights while we gain more than them.

So much for "politics for the many".
It's essential to protect minorities. Failure to protect minorities will ultimately lead to you losing your rights too. The precedent set by anti trans legislation in this country is leading to deaths of queer people not only here but overseas as well. It is also negatively impacting all patient rights in the NHS which could lead to dismissal of patient autonomy for under 25s on treatments that aren't trans related. There are organisations who have seen the recent legislation and want to apply it to birth control and abortion under 25. So yeah...
And the left has all the answers?! SMH.
The right are always wrong. It's their unique selling point, being completely incompetent, spiteful, intolerant and in almost all cases their IQ is insufficient for learning any new tasks or absorbing new information past the age of 14. They're like vegans in that they'll announce their low IQ in public every time they open their mouths. It really is quite remarkable. The modern day dunce hat wearer.

The what is a woman question is actually super easy its a woman is a person that identifies with the social schema on female.
It's even easier than that. A woman is an adult, human female.

Any Prime Minister who uses his first speech in power to highlight that this parliament is the most LGBT representative parliament in the world but believes that Trans people shouldn’t use single sex spaces is no ally to any of us. Starmer uses Trans people to score capital over the Tories but then continues to punch down on a marginalised community.
That's a very odd characterisation of reality. What he said was trans women subject to abuse should be given their own safe space away from cis women in a woman's refuge centre.
It's a rather odd statement because women by default are in their own space in the refuge and don't have to mix with other women, regardless of any of them being trans or not.
