As the doctor compared the hip and knee angles imposed by the two bikes, the young woman on the upright bike was leaning backward at rest, her hands not even reaching toward the handlebars. Had she instead assumed a realistic riding position, the hip and knee angles would have been more similar.

I currently have two herniated discs L4/L5, L5/S1 as well as some moderate degeneration in my sacroiliac joints. My physiotherapist recommended using a recumbent stationary bike for part of my recovery (I could barely walk, otherwise I would be using a treadmill). I was using an upright bike at my local gym for 2 weeks before I switched to a recumbent bike once I received it at home and let me say that it made I big difference for me. The recumbent bike felt much better for me.

For overweight people you forgot to mention the most important advantage of getting a recumbent bike ist that you sit basically on a chair and that helps a lot with the seat, which on normal indoor bike often causes pain when you sit on longer. It's also better for your back.

I'm a PT, and I can tell you he is absolutely spot on. When you measure the joint angles on a recumbent bike there is a lot more torsional stress on the joints. This has been well established in the literature, but there are a lot of personal trainers on the internet spreading mis-information.

I was set on getting a recumbent bike because its more relaxed and laid back and hey youre just trying to get blood flow in your legs after all right... but your point about hip flexers mobilty range sold me. Sitting all day at a desk is the most major cause of my lack of mobility today. It would make semse not to get a bike that doesnt help reverse that haha.

I have to take exception to this video....
Yes, I see the extra flexion on the recumbent bike.
But the presenter seems to overlook the most important difference between these two...
The Real Advantage to a recumbent bike is that the Seat supports all your upper body weight (actually almost all your body weight) compared to a traditional bike where only some of your weight is on the seat... as you pedal around you place much of your full body weight upon each pedal stroke.
From a muscle-excercising standpoint, this is far less work than when seated.
So the recumbent lets you work the muscles more while compressing the lower joints under less stress.
    Is this not correct? 💁‍♂️

for ME personally, the upright hurts less. Mainly because with an upright I dont have to bend my knee as much. A recumbent causes my knee to bend further.. which made my knee burn. I have no pain at all when I do an upright bike.

The person on the upright is just sitting there. That's not how you ride. You have to lean forward to hold the handlebars. When you do that the body angle becomes much like the recumbent rider.
