- I wanted to bring life back into an old passed down router my grandfather gave to me years ago. This router has some sentimental value and I wanted it to keep in my tool lineup. Plus, it's really cool and things aren't made this way anymore.

Bought the same router in 1970. Was considering a new-to-me Craftsman Professional to replace it. You just saved me $200. Thanks - and peace be with you - and grandpa.
I rescued my dad’s router after he passed away 5 years ago. It’s this same model. I’m glad you resurrected it.
I just bought one the other day that the guy had for 30 years and still had the original bits with it n I love it
Like it's still a power house. Of a router still n it came with it's original table they don't build them like they use to anymore
I'm sure your grandpa is very proud of you. I have the exact same router and it's a great little router. I've had it a lot of years and to be honest I just started using it again. God bless you young man for thinking of your grandpa.
Thanks for the video, I just picked up one in a auction. The body is loose and when you took the top off I saw the screws that need tighten. You saved me some time figuring this out.
Just picked this same one from a pawn shop and it had the same exact issue. Thanks for the video.
I have one just like your grandfather’s and my post in the trigger just went out. Will try and fix it like you did. Thanks for the video
Found 2 at the Thrift shop and this video saved me and the trash
Great video sir! I liked the sentiment regarding your grandfather’s tool. also liked the setup of your shop! Keep it up!! Cheers!
I have this same router! Used it this week no less!
Thanks, I have one just like yours with the same problem 👍
Just received the same router from my dad. Was trying to refurbish it since I figured it’ll be better made than a cheap new router.
Very good. I have this very same router which was my dad’s. I think of turning it into a lamp with an Edison bulb.
Excellent!
Thanks---info helped me fix a stuck switch.
Yeah, I have this exact model from my dad and I believe it was my grandfathers before that. This one has the work light add on and I need the stinkin bulb for it
Remember to check the brushes in the motor. The manual says if they are a 1/4 inch or shorter, they should be replaced.
Thanks man.. He would have been more p***** If you took it to a pawn shop for 20 bucks.. The sappy details Are the best.. Pull it out 20 years from now and remember your grandpa
Nice video. Interesting about how that "throttle" cable works! Your camera angles need a little work, but overall, a nice video. :)
Good job buddy
Thanks man! I just inherited the same router from my great uncle. Was so pleased to find a video for this exact model!
My dad had 1 Hp ROUTER Sears Craftsman Model 315-174451 . It newer model well old one now. Gonna to try restored it the 20 year old tool
Excellent. I'm making a router lift for my Craftsman Router and I need the layout of the electrical switch. You have inspired me to continue working on it. Thanks.
Excellent!!!
@@Archifx Like you, I’ve got my grandfather’s. Any thoughts about how to check and lubricate the internal bearings that spin the main shaft?
I had a couple of these in the early 80s. Both triggers broke in the exact same place your granddad's did.
I have a similar router butmuch newer ,I went to use it and found out mice had started chewing on cord so now I have to replace the cord onit but there is nothing like craftsman tools. Good video !
I have one in UK cannot get a bulb for light ,I love it
I have one just like yours.
I'm having trouble getting the bolts off to pu a new bit in
Great video. I have a Craftsman 320.17540 that I thought had a bad switch. Took it apart and some how the connector broke. If I touch the metal pieces together, it works. Not sure how to fix it since the broken metal end piece is glued in a plastic slot. Any suggestions?
I'm having the exact same problem with this router the pivot plastic snapped as well. Did you drill the whole way through. Does the pivot bolt you put in use a nut on the other side?
Could you please do a video on changing different bits and how the arbor comes out my inherited router how some issues related to long term storage, but hey it still works!
Dan Naylor yes please show video on how to change bits and set depth : D
Yes, please! The bit is stuck and probably been there since my grandpa last used it. Thanks!
"My grandfather"??!
Ha ha, now I feel really old.
I have one of these old routers, but not the "Commercial" models. Mine has a listed 25,000 RPM top speed, and it has a satisfying little "counter-revolutionary" slight kick in the hands every time you squeeze the trigger.
It ramps up to full speed almost instantaneously, and has such a sweet, high-speed motor sound - extremely fast but not whiny or irritating at all - it was really a joy to use.
Great job you will be so happy you saved this when you are old. It will remind you of your grandpa..
I also have this same Router from my late Grandfather, got it about 20 years ago still works great was wondering when it was made.
I’m going to say somewhere in the early 90’s
@@Archifx my manual said 1961 but my insides looked completely different.
@@Archifx I think I purchased mine in the early-to-mid 80's.
What size bits does this thing take? And did you do a video of changing the bits?
I have one of these. you have to be careful with the trigger cable if it is pressed against an object while plugged in can be activated
does the trigger need to be pressed down to keep the router on the entire time or is there some other on switch or trigger lock?
Any good source for parts? Brushes, spring for bit lock?
I have one very similar. Could you do a video explaining how to release the lock or engage it to swap bits? I have a newer Ryobi and theres a well identified lock to engage to prevent it from spinning so i can turn the nut to release the bit. Does this have some sort of an arm or something. The instruction manual said somethign about a collet? and its attached to a small table, how do i make adjustments to height? by loosening the wingnut and just manually moving it in the collar? and then use that dial for fine tuning? Thanks.
JC I have a MODEL 315.17480 I bought at a yard sale about 2 years ago, and I don't have a manual for it and would like to clean it up and use it. Where would I get a manual? Thank you for the video.
May I ask a favor, please? I have this exact router and am in the middle of restoring it. But I'm stuck on something. On the bottom of the router is a "locking lever" that engages the spindle to enable you to change router bits. There is a spring that keeps the locking lever away from the spindle when not in use. I have the spring, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how the spring is supposed to bepositioned under the locking lever. May I ask you to take a look and describe for me how that thing is supposed to go back together, please? Thank you for considering my request.
I have this exact same router I bought new. I just upgraded to a Bosch plunge router and so wanted to mount this one in my router table. I don't have a lift so rely on the depth adjustment on the router itself. Problem is that no matter how tight I make the knob, the body slides in the sleeve when turned on, I guess due to the vibration. I took it out of the sleeve and cleaned out all the dust with a fine grade steel wool but it still slides. Anyone have any secrets to keeping it rock steady in the sleeve?
How do you change the bit ?
Got the same one
Very useful video
What is the switch wired to?
Not sure how to lock the chuck can you upload a video to show me?
Hi, I just saw your video as I was looking for info on the old Sears Craftsman commercial router. I'm 77 and bought the router new, but I've got a different problem. The bit I was using broke off flush with the collet and I cannot figure out how to extract the shaft of the old bit in order to continue using the router, which I like very much. Can you help with a suggestion of how to remove the shaft of the old bit, please? Thanks very much. John
I’ve seen guys use an easy out to get it out. You could try drilling the core out and it may fall apart on itself. Or you could try a local machine shop. Other than that. It’s a tough one for me to figure out. Maybe the community could chime in on this one?
i just inherited the same one and has no collet, any ideas how to source one?
Mine was stuck on. I had to remove the top cap of the router and my wire was not attached to anything. I need to find where it goes.
I found same type of router but power cord is bad needs to be replaced,is this a easy fix?
Sure is. And they sell the cord on amazon. I’ll try to update the video with the link in the description soon
Having trouble with the throttle cable. Feels like there isn't sufficient pressure to push in the button. Hard for me to tell what's going on in there
I fixed mine by running a cord from the top cover eliminating the micro switch and placed a push button in the handle after i cleaned it out of stock parts.
GREAT INFO JUST PICKUP SAME ROUTER AS YOURS MODEL 315-17480 WAS MY FATHER IN LAWS ..WHAT TO KNOW IF I COULD WORK ON METAL WITH THIS ROUTER AND WERE COULD I PICK UP A COLLET FOR HOLDING A END MILL BIT .
need to replace the switch in mine, can't for the life of me find out that it is. Trying to read the numbers in the video, but can't.
Nice information. and helpful for people to appreciate good quality tools.. i want to sell old routers like that used to be form my late father in law. If anybody is interested let me know I could send you the pictures. I won't sell it in less that $25 each. They are good stuff. Well that if the bit doesn't go hire... information.
And no-one want to point out that this is a mind-bogglingly stupid design? As we have learned, the switch failure causes the router to fail on. smh
Which uncle touched you?
if you are electrician and open a router ,,,,like i open my to service,,,,,,,,,or lock to these one and see wire nuts inside the machine like these one and my machine, you no longer want sears stuff anymore , please ,,,that's the reason the motor shop's i work for, no want sears crap (junk ) on the shop to repair ,, we tell are customers to take them back to sears let them deal with they junk
