The "change filter" notification is on a timer on every refrigerator. It will tell you to change the filter even if it only had five gallons of water run through it ! So use your own judgment on how much water has been run through the filter. I live alone and travel for work and am barely at home. So very little water gets run through the refrigerator. I turn the ice maker on if I'm home for any length of time. Then turn it off and dump the ice when I leave. The change filter light comes on when I know it has had less than 15 gallons run through it. I just turn the notification light off, as I know the filter is still good ! The instructions to reset the notification light will be in your refrigerators user manual, or you can find it online. So just use your judgment on how much water and ice you use.

The ones you think are genuine may be counterfeit. Sad world we have come to

We had a fridge that must have reset a timer when you changed the filter, So after 6 months it would tell you the filter was done and you had to replace it, It did not matter if the 6 months were over the summer when the 4 kids and their friends were over or if it was winter and they stopped drinking water, It was every 6 months,

Ours has that same 6 month timer. You can simply remove and replace the same filter and it won't know the difference if you don't want to change it.

As everyone’s water usage is different, my advice for changing the filter is just go by taste. The water will start tasting “off”. That’s when I know to change it. Also, we go through tons of ice, so don’t forget all the water that makes ice also goes through the filter.
Lastly, when I change my filter and run the first gallon of water through a new filter, the first half gallon comes out black from the carbon. This is why you do this process. I’m concerned with your demonstration because this didn’t happen. I wonder if you got a used filter.

Uh, if you see a huge amount of black particles, it's you that have purchased a poor quality filter. We've been doing this for 20 years with 2 different fridges and the first gallon or so only displays a very small amount of black particles.

Where I live we have really gross ground water that is simultaneously hard and soft and smells like bleach, and I let a used filter from my fridge drip in a stopped up sink once. It was disgusting what came out.

If your filtered water is that bad, what's your tap water like, sewage? Seriously, not a joke question.

If you purchase a whole house filter, and also a small RO filter it will be way better. We bought (3) 20 inch big blue filters with different cartridges (coarse, fine, carbon) and a 6-part RO system from MaxWater. That solved well water odor problems and the RO made excellent drinking water. We measured with a TDS meter and the RO stayed below 100ppm for many years. When new it was around 60ppm. When we made ice cubes in a tray, the purity was so good that ice spikes grew on the cubes. Both systems were pretty easy to install. If you have iron in your water you might want a greensand filter. We had quite a bit of iron so we used one of those too.

If you have soldering skills, cold solders are not too hard to fix.
