I like this series. John Flansburgh is cool as hell. He should have a talk show or at the very least a podcast. Has an engaging way of speaking.
Hopefully you know about his radio show, Low Stakes With John F!
its cuz youre a diehard fan my friend im like that with the tom baker dr who cant do no wrong
That dude really knows how to write a song really well.
I really like that he's so knowledgeable about swing, big band music and musicians. Thanks Amoeba
Well! He did come up with this one... czcams.com/video/0qn-OGqaTZA/video.html
Entertaining - he knows his stuff. Wonder what´s in Mister Linnels bag.
Here after seeing TMBG live finally for the first time last night in Portland ME. Great show! Glad John is recovering from his car accident!
This is easily the best entry in the whole WIMB series. Keep coming back to this after years!
Right off the bat with Odessey and Oracle, sold.
ohhhhhhh he has such good taste (unfamiliar with everything hes talking about)
literally 😭
@@flansyburgh love your user
"It could also sound like some Miles Davis record that people don't like." ;-)
Note: The picture they show as Annie Ross @3:14 is actually Anita O'Day, who he later talks about meeting @7:37... A little video editing mix up there.
Right you are. We had a bad source in that image. Thanks for letting us know.
Flawless selections.
I don't think Linnell did one of these, why not?
Flansy is the talker ;)
why did they choose a song for the intro that flansburgh didn’t sing lol
that’s what i was thinking
They could have went with Puppet Head lol
I think its because it's like there most known song
He really knows his stuff.
Linnell was with him at the store (at 0:10), but for some reason didn't participate. Odd.
They're not married.
Someone had to get take-away coffees.
He had was having a quickie with Hot Cha.
Some other pointless thing.
Flans might be more actively obsessive about music? He’s definitely passionate and still interested in finding new things.
Linnell might be the type that just likes what he likes, often people slow down on music discovery/consumption as they get older and just stick with what they liked in their youth. Who knows, though.
@@ezekielbrockmann114 Maybe they are in fact married, but it's just a secret. Maybe in the relationship Flansburgh plays the role of the domineering and abusive husband to Linnell's long suffering wife. Maybe Linnell wanted to do the interview, but Flansburgh wouldn't let him. Maybe, once they got home, Linnell caught hell from Flansburgh for even asking. And maybe Linnell started crying under the abuse. And then maybe Flansburgh felt bad about it, apologized, and, in his remorse, made sweet love to Linnell. My point is, you ultimately don't know.
Because Linnell doesn't give a sheeeeeit.
@@reginaldperiwinkle This is almost certainly the very thing that did happen.
TMBG's discography IS a house party series.
Anyone interested in seeing more Annie Ross, she appeared in the Robert Altman film "Short Cuts", playing a past-her-prime jazz singer. Small role, but a key one.
That was pretty cool! I liked hearing him talk about the genres. I think I like a wide variety of music, but I'm terrible at getting deep into defining genres. Sounds like Flans will have great stuff to listen to. :)
The skull sessions r really good go listen pleas
Fantastic. Love The Zombies.
Annie Ross was alive when this video was made. Such a loss, she's a legend and will never really die, but it is sad she can no longer grace us with her physical existence. Rest in peace, lovely soul.
All solid choices. Sorry it took me 11 years to catch up with them!
Whistling in the dark!
Cool choices.
I have to say I have watched so many of these "What in my Bag" segments, and this is best one, John Flansburgh is a really knowledgeable guy, and he has incredible taste except for the Blossom Dearie album.
I'm loving Skull Session.
+FreedomDaveX It's like $40 on eBay! I want it really bad, did you get yours at a record shop?
I just youtubed it.
I actually knew who Blossom Dearie is/was! Very entertaining.
They were so cool
I've watched many of these...why Wasn't my favorite band recommended to be sooner!
Odessey and Oracle is my absolute favorite album.
SquidVicious would you like to get married. Today?
ya huge Zombies fan, love jazz and obscure shit like dat.....we are on the same plane
I feel the exact same way about Odessey and Oracle!
These selections are just what i thought he'd pick.
Seriously. Even the stuff he was taking a blind gamble on totally make sense for him when they play a sample.
One good thing, that makes it easier to know when you find an original.
I knew all the lady jazz singers he mentioned.... props Flans! Truly underrated singers. But I must say Lambert H&R I think is equal to the King Pleasure stuff with her, just because there's a real lack of her singing in the King Pleasure sessions, just a few featured songs.
I see the influence of especially the Hollies on TMBG so this is pretty eye-opening
cool! he likes Bossom Dearie and Annie Ross! Me too! You think this is what he wants his fans to think he likes and he kept all the guilty pleasures in the other secret bag?
Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that Flans listened to Jazz or Funk records.
solid.tasy picks
Linnell 2020.
"Everything looks so green!" - Mel Brooks History of the World Part 1
If you owned a first pressing that was worth some money and they just made another batch you'd think differently.
Changing the art help distinguish between pressing with out you having to know everything about an album.
What song is this from the intro?
You serious its birdhouse in your soul by there might be giants
im sorry
ahumaninwishing You have no reason to be sorry. How can someone blame someone for not knowing something, that's absurd.
There
+KhakiKing it's the fact that they're on a tmbg video and don't know their biggest hit.
I wonder why Linnell didn't participate despite the fact that he's in the beginning of the video.
3:13 That's Anita O'Day. She was also a bit crazy.
John Linnell when?
@supak108 I kind of like it, unless they are really ugly. but i like the 70s designs on my 50s records
I see what your saying but I really never buy a record simply because it's worth a lot of money. If I can get a good deal on something that is usually expensive and I like it then I'll certainly buy it, but I never really resell anything, The artwork thing just annoys me personally because even if its a reissue the music is still the same and I don't like when they change something the artists originally intended. Take care man
Jazzy.
Computer, analysis!
The thoughts... they're coming from inside your head!
anyone else hate when they reissue a record and change the original cover. That makes no sense to me.
They shouLd reaLLy associaTe wiTh corey TayLor
I clicked because I thought it was Ricky from Trailer Park Boys...
I have over 10,000 albums and have barely touched shit.
I feel very obligated to say first for the first time ever in my life, but I'll refrain.
