Credit should go to the editing which brought Mothersbaugh's storytelling to life.
i agree!

🙄 - I guess your handle is the "buyer beware" hint.
Agree!
I love the extra bonus commentary w Pink Floyd, lol. Yes, the editing of this is great.
Will always watch anything from Mark or Jerry!
Mark Mothersbaugh is a national treasure.
Never heard of him!
@@realscience948Me either!
The ignorant replies to your comment make me weep for the future.
I think he saved music coming out of the late 70s.
Every interview I see with him he’s always so calm and friendly and open happy to talk about anything, and so knowledgeable, full of stories, passionate about music…seems like a really good and cool guy
I love Devo and I love Mark Mothersbaugh.
I saw them in concert years ago and it was a great show. I do think that if people would watch their movie that the group would seem a lot less strange. It really is true that DEVO is always 10 years ahead, no matter what year it is.
Are we not men?
Wow first Criterion Closet now Amoeba. Day in the life of goat. True Genius. 🧠 💿 🎥 🐐 🤓
I wonder how he handles spice?
@@dizzy2d Nice.
He eats one wing and tells an amazing 20-minute story. Eats a second wing, “Oh wow, that’s spicy. It reminds me of a time in 1983 when….” Reaches for the third wing but two hours have gone by. No sweating or milk or big reactions, just the best anecdotes they ever recorded
I really, really, really appreciate the time and care Amoeba puts into these videos. They are so much better than then need to for the purpose it serves. The thoughtful editing that folks rightly praise brings a depth of insight to the discussion and allows the musician to discuss their "bag contents" with great dimensionality. I think these emempheral videos could easily go unnoticed in our content-laden culture but I sincerely hope that each and everyone becomes archived for they are more that simple documents of taste. These videos provide valuable insights into what inspires and what provokes an artist.
Same here i like these a lot they kind of remind of the TV programme the tube
Totally, if you could just get rid of that Ukraine profile pic, that'd be great

@@davidfulton179 That's a Nazi Slogan.
One Sunday late in the 70's I decided to see an all ages show at The Whisky & the three bands playing were Devo , The Germs & Blondie. Pretty good show 👌
Wow, you got Nerd punk, Hardcore punk and progressive punk all in one show. One of the better line ups I have seen.
The pride of Akron, Ohio. I lived in that Industrial Environment, and can understand the DEVO sensibility. You have to tip your cap to Mark, going to Hollywood, scoring dozens of features, and being a huge artistic success.
Mark seems like such a great guy. DEVO tried so hard to not be cool that they actually became cool. You gotta hand it to them!
Although they did stop being cool with through being cool and the video, they succeeded.
✋️
He's through being cool...
Noticing him checking out Rush Permanant Waves
I don't personally think so. I don't think they were rejecting cool, I don't think they were embracing it either, I think they were just doing their own thing and didn't really consider either possibility to be important.
They're more performance artists than they are musicians. (Although they did put out some pretty cool music over the years)
Can you imagine having a conversation with Mark Mothersbaugh? So much talent, history and insight. Wow...
Actually, yes, I can I met him in 2016 at a thing for Iggy Pop at Joshua homme!!.And we spoke for like 30 minutes. What a nice guy and we took a selfie
Met and talked with him for like 30 minutes at some DEVO screening a few months ago, super cool and eccentric conversation, I’ll never forget it!
Yes! He’s very nice! He gave me some gum, a comb and a t-shirt.
At a concert for their first album some friends and I printed 'de-evolved' sayings on haz-mat suits and wore them to the show, which we ended up exchanging for just one of their suits. Possibly because of this exchange we were able to convince them to come to a party at our place after the show. We of course did talk with the band members, they were all very friendly and interesting. I don’t recall it but a friend told me she remembers Mark played DJ at the party. Later, we heard that Devo wore our haz-mat suits on stage the next night at their show in San Francisco.
I saw him in Burbank airport and was surprised he had no fans hanging around. Went up to him and said hi. We chatted for quite a while. He has so many interests and was happy to meet someone who knew some of his work.
One of the best to ever do it in this episode ❤
I interviewed Mark several years ago when I worked as a news reporter. He's an incredibly nice guy who is very generous with his time. He's also a fan of The Residents. I'm surprised he didn't pull one of their albums out of the bag!
I remember watching DEVO on Saturday Night Live in 1978. I had never heard anything like it at the time. Since then, so many bands imitated their style of music. It is a joke that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the most influential bands of all time.
Mark is a musical genius
I am a Devo spud and part of their Devolution.Mark is a lovely guy and a real legend.
I’m proud to see Mark Mothersbaugh showing his face now and then, even though I know he’s busy with his own life and projects. I look up to him and his music, and I find myself missing DEVO.
The remaining members still tour. I saw them like 15 years back and it was amazing how energetic they still were. No crazy outfits required to attend.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade with the amount of DEVO fans accumulated over the many decades, though, I wonder if it would be worth it to have a Devo-palooza event one day.
I love Devo and I love Mark. Long live de-evolution
Always enjoy artists who have more to say about the music than about themselves.
Those glasses are tremendous
He sells them on his website fyi
He won't see well if he does
@@RayZappaWhat?! Save my seat, be right back! 😍
A must watch for me as soon as it popped up. You just know that his choices are going to be eclectic and esoteric. That Gerard Hoffnung LP sounds like a delight and the world will alway need more music as adventurous as Trout Mask Replica.
Those who don't know DEVO cannot understand, those who know DEVO cannot explain. I would just say 'brilliant'. Mark and the guys came up with this band that will NEVER be duplicated.
Mark Mothersbaugh .... International treasure... give him, Elfman and Zimmer some super good award.
I've seen them twice this year. I want to see them again already. Mark is a treasure!
Great guy with an extensive music knowledge. He gave me the ability, to see this world more comprehensively.
One of the best live bands, truly underrated. D-E-V-O!
It was a dream come true to see you and DEVO in Helsinki's flow festival last summer, such a shame the audience was mainly young unaware Nordic ladies, but I gave it large, especially for MR.DNA. The show was amazing!
The end 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 hell yea!!
I just got a gold stamp promo of are we not men, was just looking for mark content and there he is in recent ameoba episodes! awesome to hear him talk about music.
great interview, i fell in love with Wes Anderson bottle rocket when it came out to the point that i bought the soundtrack and fell in love with Marks compositions. To this day i go back to that sound track and feel a bit of youth, freedom and camaraderie the movie represents.
I love this,Devo has always been one of my favorites.
Almost thought he was going to go the whole video without rambling on about some obscure synthesizer but right at the end he pulls through. Love this guy!
Hahaha I thought the same thing
Wow man, watched him in the closet picking out films last night and now watching What’s in My Bag. 😍
So great.
Thank you!
Man that Ondioline story made my day. Thanks Mark! The circle of life!
Remember hearing Devo for the 1st time in the early 80s.Mind blown and been a fan ever since.Devo rips.🗽🛸♥️
I loved the ' Show us your junk ' episode with Mark , this was also love worthy , the pharmacy album cracked me up , Im a HUGE Devo fanatic , Thank You Amoeba & Mark !
I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I just knew that his picks would be highly eccentric.
Could of watched this for hours.. Also the editing was superb. His music in The Royal Tenebaums is perfect.
What really got me with DEVO way back when was the idea of devolution and it was completely like things i thought and one of the big reasons i never had kids. and looking around today i feel it stronger than ever, and it is the technology i sort of feel has been the biggest problem. just seeing people at the store shopping with little kids in their carts eyes absolutely glued to a screen, it is sad and it is scary.
Awesome. Grew up listening to Devo and my kids watching Rugrats. What an interesting dude.
Now release an unedited version with all the cool Devo anecdotes you guys left on the cutting room floor. Why, you ask?Because there are two cats who will not be with us forever: Brian Eno and Mark M. and even when they veer off into self-referential (not to be confused with self-reverential) territory, the depth of information being laid on us is worth the side trip, esp since Mark always manages to somehow wind it back to the question/album at-hand. Two thumbs up, way up.
I would give my left arm for a video of Mark, Brian, and Danny just sitting around for 2 hours talking shop. Bonus points if there's a turntable and a synth handy.
Thank you for helping me, many years ago, form a healthy relationship with music , Mark ...I gave you a ride to your hotel after a show in Philly many years ago and its still one of my favorite memories...PRAISE BOB
Worked with Robert and Hugh Cornwell on the album Nosferatu..... a mix of DEVO and Beefheart if I ever heard it.... with a Cream cover.
Great album. I got it along with JJ Burnel's solo album in 1979
@@paulelmer i dont know why ive never pulled the trigger on Euroman Cometh. Ive always enjoyed Freddie Laker. May be the same reasons I dont own Smooth Noodle Maps or Total DEVO.
Short but so informative..Absolutely brilliant ..🙌
I NEVER miss a Motherbaugh interview. He's so knowledgeable and interesting, but also so effortlessly funny
and I like very much his glasses
*Thank YOU Mark Mothersbaugh for opening my mind in the late 70's. You remain a huge person in my life.*
When Mark describes the bands and music that “made my mind,” I identified strongly because DEVO and the B52s (both seen on SNL when my brother would let me stay up late) absolutely constructed a part of mine.
I've been a DEVO fan since the 80's, and I gained even deeper respect for him for bringing up Taylor Swift. He's not wrong - she does a lot of good in the world and brings people together. It makes me happy to see someone of his esteem saying something uplifting about her impact when so many people seem to find glee in tearing her down. I love music of all kinds. From Dr. John, Zappa, and Beefheart, to DEVO, all the way up to now, with artists like Swift, Chappell Roan, and many others. Obviously, he operates from a place of love and respect for the art of music and how it brings people together, and as an avid fan of many genres within modern music, I love to see it.
Mark was at Amoeba ánd Criterion in the same week, so he's gonna have 2 bags!
Love hearing Mark's pics. So much respect for him and his whole career
Now, THAT is the kind of guest I like to see on What's in My Bag?. A guest who is well spoken, knowledgeable, experienced, capable of profound insight, and sincere. Now, I also enjoy the oddball, deep-in-the-sticks still-riding-the-lightning flake or grungy rockboy, but Amoeba hosts legends like no other store, service, or platform. I didn't really know Mr. Mothersbaugh before, but I will check out his work now.
Looking good Mark.
My man did the wombo combo of the "Criterion Closet" and "What's In My Bag?".
The variety of textures in the kislux pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
Bless you Mark for…well…you being you. Anytime I get to hear you share your insights it always validates my own feelings in the freedom to color outside the lines.
Mark is a genius that is so smart, most folks cannot begin to understand his high level of thinking. His absolute love for classical music is far beyond any musician I've seen on Amoeba
If Mark DIDN'T have a beefheart record, I'd be surprised hahah Such a good episode!
On Memorial Day weekend, went to friend's house...he has a bulldog that belonged to his late father. Comment made: This dog is from outer space...just so weird.
So I mentioned an old Steve Miller song that may support his theory: Last Wombat in Mecca. My son laughed at me saying my Dad knows all the weird tunes. Went on Spotify and played it, and all present now believe the theory too. They are there for a reason.
I finally got to see Devo for the first time a couple weeks ago in Chicago. I was lucky enough to catch part of Mark's jumpsuit from the stage. This guy is one of my idols and the mind behind some of my favorite music, scores and projects. This was a delight to watch!
a frickin' bespectacled literal free range christ of a human
"It's the blimp!" This was cool! Thanks!
"Babies, quit yer nursing, unless you're having fun!"
The video footage of that first album was incredible, ive gotta find that album now
Truly avante garde...Devo's famous "Whip It" video was made over a full year BEFORE MTV first aired in 1981.
I loved this. It was very true to MM. I wish he would’ve shown us more. I’m not surprised by what he picked I just wish he would’ve picked more recent artists also. Jerry Casale did one of these and he went through a few different decades and genres. I’m so curious. In an old interview he mentioned that he liked Wall of Voodoo and that made me happy.
Genius!!
Wow i love how Mark thinks. Grew up with the big D. He's right the 8 track sounds very raw and authentic. If you can still find it...
Ha ! I was listening to some DEVO while working my cleaning job and this pops up now I am relaxing at home good times !
You may not know it, but you have heard him. Pioneer.
i dont watch all episodes of this , but this is the man!
Yo, this man is SO cool.
The "grass - a history of Marijuana" docu would NOT have been the same without him!!!
It is quite literally one of the most musical documentaries I've ever experienced. It just flows from one track into another seamlessly and conveys the perfect tone. I love you, Mark Mothersbaugh, and your goofy-ass name! ^__^
LOVE U, Mark!!! Thanks Amoeba - love these so much. DEVO are and were the BEST - the best. Life changing band since I was very young. Cheers! Thanks for this. Of course he loves the Trout Mask LP :p
MouseHunt was my favorite childhood movie
There’s nothing quite like spending hours in a music store, and being able to purchase music you love, or you’ve just found out about because of physically being there. Owning a tangible piece of music will forever trump owning a digital piece of music.
Love your attitude about this bag and not caring about what people will say. kislux You are right keep your head up and no your priorities.
Criterion collection now this!? Good times for Devo fans.
This makes me miss Wax Trax in Chicago!
A true national treasure.
He's always been an inspiration
man, he looks great!
D E V O on 8-track ya say??????? hummmmmmm. I wonder if 'ROD the man ROOTER' green lit that one ! dyin under daddys cap!
Such a rad interview, thank you.
The best he’s looked in years. God bless Ozempic.
Cool bit of Floyd/Devo trivia I never knew!
Praise Bob.
Give him 10 more episodes please.
Great audio miscelanea of a great innovator creator of modern music with punk elements like Devo. Henry Rollins fan of .
Greetings rockers poppers electroshockers !!!!
That drum riff you hear on Captain Beefheart's The Blimp is actually a Frank Zappa & The Mothers song called Charles Ives.
Mark, your the coolest!
What a cool guy.
Good picks. Mark - punk for life.
He has the freedom, so this is what he chose, that day, in this video..
I have a photo of myself with this gentleman. 😸
I had that 8 track portable player! It was blue and took about 12 D batteries. 😮
OUR FATHER
Never thought I'd see Enescu in someone's bag.
Would love to hear him talk about his collaborations with Neil Young in the late 70s/early 80s. Great video. Tried a few times to get into Trout Mask Replica but it just didn't take.
Mark is so great.
Exploring more Beefheart per Marks mention, same vein as the residents approach? Music is so amazing, there’s diamonds in the haystacks of vinyls of yore.
A true visionary!
Great choices
That story about the Pink Floyd hand me down synthesizer was cool!
