    ------------------------------
Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

I really enjoyed listening to this discussion. It happens that I’ve recently begun to read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book, “Team of Rivals.” I’m a little surprised that these two don’t mention her book. I would appreciate thoughtful comments on why they didn’t. Maybe that will become clearer as I continue my slow progress through the book with this discussion now also in mind.

I think these two scholars are aligned with a conservative Christian and Calvinistic worldview and also a politically conservative perspective . They see Lincoln through that lens. Whereas Ms. Goodwin, a great writer, does not share those two affinities.

Great discussion! Thanks are due both gentlemen for the interesting choice of subtopics and the wonderful flow of the conversation, based as much in their erudition and scholarly seriousness as in their delightful personal spontaneity. Our country needs as much of this kind of honest and well-informed historical perspective as we can get! And in that spirit, I'd like to add a modest, yet potentially important, detail to the part of the discussion occurring at about the half hour point. This is something that I noticed simply because of my interest in the biography of a famous Presbyterian Washington, D.C. pastor (though I am not a Presbyterian and do not reside in the D.C. area): What Dr. Guelzo says about Lincoln and religion is certainly correct, as far as I know. But it leaves out the fact that the President repeatedly attended services at the historic New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, located close to the White House, during the Civil War. The church history records that Lincoln actually "rented" a pew, which I believe remains in the church to this day. There is also a stained-glass window to Lincoln's memory on the north side of the sanctuary. Some sources even note that after the assassination Mary Lincoln sent Pastor Phineas Gurley one of Lincoln's tall hats, as a gesture of thanks for his support. Evidently, Pastor Gurley was actually a friend, and what you might call something of a "spiritual advisor," to Lincoln. Their closeness and shared trust is especially implied by the fact that Pastor Gurley officiated at Lincoln's funeral service at the White House, and also at the funeral of the Lincolns' son, Willie. I don't bring up this particular to be "nit-picky," but rather to take Professor Guelzo's comments on Lincoln's personal Christian ethos a little further, for its implications about Lincoln's character, including his personal religious mindset. In any case, once again, great program and many thanks!

Lincoln was correct early on about the race issues but had to couch his debate points to be electable. Highly intelligent, compassionate and on the race issue, moral. Question: How many of his cabinet members held the same race view and would carryout a moral policy if Lincoln would fall by the wayside? Answer: none would or did. Lincoln had to pick a Tennessee Democrat to win his election.
What happened to the forty acres and a mule, land or even a state for the freed blacks? It was nearly all carpetbagging opportunist Northerners who took over in the South after the war. There was little or no sentiment on behalf of the black race after the war.
700,000 plus deaths to keep the Union together and nothing for the blacks save for noble but idle pronouncements.
All this having been said, at minimum, the natural rights of every human was at least addressed.
Abraham Lincoln could have and should have left a document and an appointed leader of this largely forgotten moral push.
Lincoln's generals then soon handled the American Indians in a not dissimilar manner.
The big question: What if Lincoln had lived?

    • @jeffmilroy9345

A black sovereign state or nation perhaps? It would have been a real fight for ole Abe and further war was not out of the question. Cotton profits were huge for Yankee, southerner, and Brit alike. Think Berkshire Hathaway's roots. Textiles forged the industrial revolution.

Lincoln waited until the wind blew before he set sail, that's why he had no plan for the post-war period. Based on his statements before the war and the way he handled the war, there is no way to predict his likely actions, as his statements were shaped to fit the moment.

History of anything is ALWAYS written by "the winner".
Lincoln ended slavery in the very worst way possible, war.
North and South were Siamese twins of each other, on this issue.
Lincoln saved the Union and completely destroyed the fundamental meanings of the "IXth" and "Xth" Amendments.
We are where we are now; started are Administrative provinces of a "foreign power", of imperialist in nature that was originally finally a neutral arbiter.
