I was surprised at the turnout for this protest on Saturday evening.
It is not really aimed at the tourists, but at the government that has allowed tourism to grow faster and faster.
Many people's jobs rely on tourism, either directly or indirectly.
The problem is twofold, the first is mass tourism, where we get more and more tourists in the same area, together with the tens of thousands that arrive on cruise ships.
The island has a capacity for comfortable living and the fear is that this capacity is going to be exceeded.
We can all see it when we are stuck in traffic jams, or can't find a space on the beach.
What is less easy to see is the effect on other infrastructure like energy, water and sewage.
There is also an environmental impact, with Palma having some of the most polluted air in the Mediterranean.
The second is property prices. Mallorca has always been more expensive than the mainland, but in recent years the number of non-resident buying property here has caused prices to soar to such levels that it is impossible for locals to buy, or rent, a home. These are the people we all need to live on the island, doctors, nurses, drivers, shop assistants, cleaners, ...
Many workers who used to come to the island to work for the summer have said "no" as they can't afford to live here. It is easy to say "pay them more", and that does happen, but the consequence of that is that prices have to go up.
The government has seen the protest and said that they will respond. One suggestion is to reduce the number of flights to the island, another is to restrict who can purchase a property on the island. There has been a clampdown on illegal lets.
The protests are aimed at the government and the banners are trying to get across to the visitors to the island what is happening to their daily lives.
The locals know that tourists are key to their livelihoods and want them to have a good time when they are here.
Mallorca is a very safe place to visit and live and I am sure you will have a wonderful holiday here.
Hope you continue to have many happy holidays in Mallorca,
    Thanks for watching.

Well Steve, I've done my bit, after many years of being a well behaved tourist visiting Majorca (and paying a premium for the privilege), Ive booked for Cyprus next year. This year will be my last on your island. I go abroad for a holiday and not to be part of some political/social melodrama. Im genuinely sick and tired of people bellyaching about something or other. After Covid was over tourism didn't seem to be an issue and we were welcomed back. Now it is. I wish people would make up their mind. Believe me if i could cancel this year without losing a lot of money, I would.

Hi Steve. Thank you for updating us as the situation unfolds. I regret to inform you that we have decided to cancel our trip to Majorca this year. We have rebooked for a trip to Greece. The Greeks will no doubt welcome us with open arms, and I’m sure thousands upon thousands of Brits will follow suit. Hi Steve. I appreciate your message because it’s honest. I’m mallorquín citizen, working in tourism industry for last 30 years. I’m agree with you in many aspects. Permit me to say some real true: in 30 years we local people are NOT more rich, only a few families that owned the major businesses in the Islands. The cost of life increased a lot because their mentality of “tourist are rich”, and we pay like rich people… we’re not against tourists, we’re against our government that give facilities to these few families that control all the business. You’re intelligent and probably you knew that, but the protest are “we need to say this”. Another reason is that a lot of foreign people came to because of high demand of workers… and you have to calculate how many people IN EXCESS are in this limited place. Not only tourists are take a place everywhere, we’re really too much people living here. Solution is very complicated, not only decrease tourist.

Thank you for your message and totally agree with you and I don't know the answer. It is for the government to make the changes and it is the government where the focus of the protests should be made. Threatening, abusing and assaulting tourists is not the right way to move forward. For the long term, it will be interesting to see what Antoni Riera's group come up with, but that won't solve the immediate problem. Thank you again for your comments.

Thankyou Steve for explaining this, you are about the only one who has done so. I feel so sorry for the Mallorquins, but holding placards up saying "tourists go home" doesn't sit well with me or my family. We have therefore cancelled and are now going to Greece this year and don't know when we will return to Mallorca again. This is purely the fault of the government not the tourists. It's a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. I was nastily abused by someone on another CZcams channel after putting much the same as I've put on here. I am not selfish but who wants to be on holiday to have this going on. I hope this all gets sorted out in time. The housing situation is awful in many countries. A couple of years ago we went to Magaluf in July and we couldn't believe how many tourists were around I had never seen so many in all the years Ive been going since the mid 80s. I have to say we were fed up with queuing to get in bars so I can imagine how the locals feel, then the prices had shot up so again that effects locals as well as tourists.
As you already know we decided not to go this year due to the costs involved so its worked, upping the prices has certainly put us off although I am angry after all these years of spending my hard earned cash on the Island, I am hoping these prices will tumble at some stage, I have seen this happen before and it killed the resort of Palma Nova and Magaluf.

I'm in Mallorca right now and agree with much of what you say. We are only here for a week and unfortunately ended up slap on the middle of the protest. It was loud and intimidating and we didn't know what it was about. We had to Google the text on the placards, and it all translated as saying we tourists weren't welcome. I appreciate that may have just been a translation issue but I do think many in the protest were probably saying that. I have spoken to majorcans (not expats) about what they think and it really isnt just the housing as you say; although that's a problem everywhere - recently my 38yr old son has had to move back home with his family (just as we were thinking the house was too big for us two). Nothing to do with tourism where I live in England; buy to let mortgages have caused much of it in the UK. But as for beautiful Mallorca, put flight costs up and stop all inclusive packages and definitely have rules as to who can buy property. When I go abroad I want to taste and experience the culture. I don't want to be surrounded by loud beer monsters and guys selling fake designers bags or those pretending to play a cello - what the hell is going on there! (Outside the Palace yesterday).

Sorry to hear that you were caught up amongst it. The original protest was organised by a group who were protesting because nearly half of the houses in their town are not lived in. I was un the protest and that is the truth: we do no want more tourists, Mallorca is an island with limited resources ( get an idea: we do not have even rivers to get water), is impossible for us to host 14 million people!!! Please think about It. It's not only the problem we have to rent or buy houses for mallorcan people. We have said enough and you have to respect It. It's our land not yours.

    • @SteveandAnitainMallorca
      @SteveandAnitainMallorca  Před měsícem +1

@@josepi967 The key word is "more". Mallorca needs tourists to maintain its economy. Nearly half of the GDP comes from tourism. The problem has been created by successive governments, whether it be PP or PSOE, or others, who have not had the will to set limits on the number of tourists allowed onto the island, resulting in the population more than doubling in the summer months. The proposals to limit the number of cruise ships was voted down last week by VOX and the PSOE. The new measures to help prevent illegal tourist rentals will go some way to help, but much more is needed.

As the vast majority of hotels in Majorca are seasonal, surely seasonal workers could be given on site accommodation as part of the employment package. UK holiday parks have done this for decades. Tourist numbers are mostly influenced by price, accommodation, meals, drinks etc. If people can’t afford Majorca or don’t think it’s worth the price, they will simply go elsewhere and numbers will fall. Calvia in particular has suggested for years that the area would prefer lower numbers of more affluent tourists, the changes in Magalluf show this.

But Steve tourists were heckled and signs were telling tourists to go home. They are planning to storm the beaches this weekend to stop tourists using them.
This is a government problem. The tourists are not to blame.
My family have had property and been coming since the late 1960s. I myself have bedn coming regularly since 1980. Several times a year. We haven't liked some of the changes either but I do think people have a romantic view of what things were like 40 years ago.
The sewage system was inadequate, the water undrinkable- even teeth brushing would make you ill, there was so much poverty among locals and so little basic stuff was available on the island.
We are coming next month. We have had a stressful time this last few months. and just want to relax. We really don't need the stress.
This problem is not exclusive to Mallorca. It is world wide.
Here in London we have mass tourism all year round not just 6 months of the year! Properties owned by foreigners sit empty. We have so many immigrants being housed while our own live on the street but we don't target tourists or foreigners (we would be called racist if we did)- we target government policy!
Sorry but a lot of Spanish Mallocans got very wealthy off the back of tourism. You are always going to have to haves and nit haves in any society. Those protesters trying to ruin people's holidays obviously don't care about their fellow citizens who may lose their livelihoods because of their behaviour towards tourists!
The government need to stop new developments (they promised this in the 1990s but didn't). They need to supply affordable council rentals for resudents. And yes limit the tourism by reducing flights/ boats and accommodation availability.
We came those 2 weeks Boris relaxed restrictions July 2020 during the covid period. We had a fabulous time as it was empty but our Spanish friends with local businesses in hospitality were on their knees desperate for tourism to return. Some never recovered......
El Toro was once a little secret off the beaten track. A small village and a block of apartments by the beach with a restaurant and a few fishing boats.
They built more apartments and then a few more restaurants and created a small Port Adriano. Then the hotel next door to the origional block. It was fine. Then they proposed the big Port we see there today. My cousin was instrumental in blocking its construction on the basis that there was rare sea animal and sea plant life around that coastline. He took it to Madrid who blocked it for about 5 years. But money talks and they got their way in the end.... they have literally built on every inch of coastine there now and even behind the block on the grassland......really this is a government problem.
For years tourism has been heavily promoted. It has created a much better infrastructure in things like sewage, waste disposal, clean water and employment. The island is much cleaner than when I first came. Mallorca has become wealthy through tourism- now they tell us to go home! It is outrageous really. Sure limit us, but to blame us for their problems is an easy copout and frankly it is passing the buck..
Stop blaming and hating on the tourists because if they stop coming the economy will plummet and the situation could end up being worse because if there's no money coming in the government won't bail them out and the new generations of residents will have to leave to see emoyment and opportunities elsewhere anyway.

    • @SteveandAnitainMallorca
      @SteveandAnitainMallorca  Před měsícem

I agree with just about everything you have said and have witnessed many of the changes since we arrived on the island in 1985. I used to have a business in El Toro, so know the area, It was wrong to target the tourists and I don't believe that was the intention of the organisers. They were fairly clear that they were protesting about homes and the lack of them. Other groups tagged on and that is where the problem started. I have experienced the overcrowding in London and didn't feel comfortable being shoulder to should with people in the street. The proposals in the Palma town hall yesterday were voted down by VOX, a far right group who were in a coalition with the mayor's PP party. The council of Mallorca have agreed to take measures to prevent illegal tourist rentals by enlisting the help of the local police and the tax authorities. This will help the inspectors to identify the illegal tourist rentals. Minorities always seem to have the loudest voices but the majority of residents on the island know that their livelihoods rely on tourism and just want the government to manage it properly.

Hi Steve, I understand your concerns regarding property prices and rent etc. However, it happens in the Uk, the Lake District is a prime example where the Hotels house their own staff due to the lack of affordable housing. I think the Majorcans need to ask where the wealth generated by the tourism is going and what the Government are spending it on? It doesn’t appear from your perspective that it is on infrastructure. The other thing I would say is that the locals shouldn’t moan about house prices when they are selling to the highest bidder. You cannot have it both ways!

As Steven mentioned here the salaries are really low if you compare them with the average salary of those visiting us (I mean people from Germany, UK, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden,…).
They all make offers most locals can’t compete with.
Also, the greed of hotel and rental car companies has no limits. We have been beating our tourist numbers year after year since Covid. We don’t need that.
We can’t grow more. It’s not sustainable. We don’t have enough resources (roads, hospitals, schools, water, energy, food,…). We want tourist to come and enjoy the island, but we can’t simply afford that many of you. We have to stop and start decreasing.
If increasing the prices of the holidays is the only way to go to limit the amount of people… so be it.

It is 100% to do with Brussels. You simply cannot have your cake and eat it, meaning you either have freedom of movement and freedom of residency within the EU, with locals getting clobbered, or you don't, and there is no 3rd option.

If someone needs to be a resident for say three years, they have to register with their town hall. A consequence of being a resident for more than 180 days means that you become a tax resident, paying your tax in Spain and declaring worldwide assets. "i am sure there must be a loophole"
      there are loopholes aplenty.
One more time. while the demand for accommodation in general, and tourist accommodation in particular, far exceeds supply, then you will get VERY high property prices and saturation of the island.
Such market forces cannot be altered by the proposed rules you are talking about.
Only if EU Freedom of Movement laws are rescinded, as they were during Covid, will you get any meaningful change.

In France, that rule has resulted in many communities with British property owners massively decreasing the time they spend in France, which in turn has hit the local French businesses with reduced incomes. Empty houses bring in no income for the local economy. Occupied houses do. Thus France is seeking to amend this rule.
Mallorca may well face the same situation, whereby property prices continue to escalate, bought by people who, by law, are compelled to stay absent for half the year. It helps no one.
Insisting that only those with a history of being a Mallorcan resident can buy or rent out property won't work.
ONLY ending EU Freedom of Movement will make a difference.
The heart of the question for local Mallorcans should be why they can't earn enough to live on their own island when foreigners can earn enough to buy holiday homes there. Time for Mallorcans to examine why they are getting shafted, and not why others are doing so much better than them.
