So; differences from mine:
- 12 UI FreePlay has much longer battery life per charge
- 12 UI FreePlay only comes with a dock, whereas the 12 UI (standard) comes with a full-on charging pod
- Weight difference
I believe the free play will have a charging pod too depending on which is ordered.

Absolutely amazing!
This is what I've been waiting for since I got my GAN 12, the plan was to upgrade the core if it wasn't main worthy to a UI.
However the GAN 12 became my main.
This is my dream come true of a smartcube that feels like a main, that's the main reason my smartcubes gather dust, they're just less fun than my main.
I attach feel to fun it seems as my speed was about the same. Also they were always flat when I came to use them.
I would prefer a removable battery I think considering how long it lasts. I would also hope however the rechargable battery is replacible, I don't like products that can't be repaired.
I've been checking so often for this, I'll check again on the 20th, I can't wait!

I am so glad you got this cube! I’ve been posting in the Gan subreddit for close to a year wondering what was happening with this cube being released in the us.
I was so confused that this was being sold in china…but absolutely no confirmation of it was real in the USA…
I’m not naming names as well about that other flagship ai smart cube but I did learn that the 21worm 😉 adjustable edge magnet pieces fit the cube also as like an upgrade

I’ve had one for several months now, and it is just as incredible as you say. As far as I can tell from your video, the only “adjustment” they have made is removing the new PowerPod from the box. Mine came with one included that has a new clear frosted lid and differently spaced charging prongs, but is otherwise identical to the old version. The normal charging dock was absent, as the PowerPod makes it redundant.
From your description mine seems to be the same. The battery life is better than my old i2,but not by much. 15 hours? No way. Maybe with the cube fully charged and recharging it with the power pod, also fully charged, it may get to 15 hours in total, but on a single charge with the cube alone I don't see it happening with the rechargeable battery.
Overall it feels very similar to the regular 12, sans maglev, which isn't something I really miss. By far it's the best smart cube in the market, the only thing I would like to be different was an option for a removable battery, even if they don't last nearly as long as in the i Carry die to the gyroscope.
The gyro still drifts over time but it's much better than on the i2 as well, but I have no clue how it compares with the i3 as I skipped that one.
The i Carry is still the one I carry around when I want to bring a smart cube with me, as I never have to worry about the battery and it fits well in the old QiYi box I like to carry cubes in, but when I'm home it's pretty much the 12ui all the time, unless I'm just doing some casual solves.
Another change that just became apparent to me is that the old version required you to place the cube in the PowerPod and press the button to activate it for pairing with your phone. This was nice because you could just take the cube out of the box and use it as a dumb cube without the lights constantly flashing in your face.
Oh yeah, forgot to add, one thing that I find very annoying with the 12ui is that I haven't figured out how to turn it on without it being plugged to the power pod. While the price was a bit ridiculous, I decided to take a leap of faith and buy it anyway as it looked like it would feel just like a modern flagship GAN cube, and in this regard it didn't disappoint at all. It was a bit too loose for my taste on the default settings, but after a few adjustments and lubrication, it's my favorite cube, even counting the non-smart ones.

the tornado v3 flagship has some magnet issue, the magnet default setting is 3, when i turn to 2, after 3-4 solved it will automatically back to 3, this is not good, they should fix this, too bad, its brand new i just got it 2days before 2units, both have the same problem
Hey, so my 12ui (bought off AliExpress in China 3-4 weeks ago), weighs 67.7g (the manual says it should weigh 66.5g, and your video says yours weighs 68.5). I must have got an earlier version because the biggest problem with mine is: the battery lasts 2.5 hours! That’s what the manual says, and I’ve tested it for weeks and it is accurate. The battery dies FAST. So if they’ve improved it to now last 15 hours, that would be amazing! Also, one thing that is BETTER about mine than yours is: my 12ui came with a really nice PowerPod Box! Which is really nice! Looks like now that they improved the battery life, they only give you a Charging station and not a PowerPod Box any more. Too bad because the PowerPod is awesome (i like it so much that i then ordered a 2nd one for my 365 i3 too).
Also, in your review, you didn’t mention HOW you turn the 12ui on? My (older version 12ui) has to be in the box to turn it on, and you have to press the button on the box. It doesn’t turn on by just rotating one side (like the other Gan Smart Cubes). So did they change that too? Because that’s also another annoying feature on mine (if it’s idle for 10 min and turns itself off, then i have to put it back in the box and press the button to re-activate it).

You have both i3 and 12 ui? Compared to the x- man tornado v3m , how does it turn?
I think 15 hours is what you get recharging it with a fully charged Power Pod. Which feels kinda deceiving, if that's what they really advertised. I don't know, I don't really remember and wouldn't believe it back when I bought mine and was expecting to have the same or worse (due to the smaller core) battery life than the i2.
It does drain the battery a little too fast for my taste. I sometimes do enjoy longer practice sessions and if I forget to set it to recharge when I stop using it, I'll for sure need to pause for it to recharge before I'm done for the day.
@@actioncameraspro I have the XMan Tornado V3 “Flagship” (not the “Pioneer”). I know many people like that cube, but I don’t love it. My 2021 MoYu WeiLong WR M (MagLev) is BY FAR my best cube! I’ve also got a Gan 13 and also don’t love that one.
As for the Gan Smart Cubes, the 12ui is the only really nice one. I don’t need to lube it and it’s smooth and fast. The i3 and iCarry S both catch a lot (the i3 is better than the iCarry S, but the i3 needs Lube EVERY DAY or else it sucks. I use Lunar Lube from SCS).
The only problem with the 12ui, was the battery SUCKED. It dies every 2 hours!
But this new one, the 12ui “FreePlay” has a 15 hour battery! So that will be amazing and make it (by far) the best of Gan’s Smart cubes.
@@gcolombelli it’s a bit confusing since the one Shawn is reviewing in this video is a BRAND NEW cube, not the “Gan12ui” that’s been available for a while already; they barely changed the name of it, so it’s confusing.

“Gan 12ui FreePlay”. Which I DIFFERENT than the “Gan 12ui”.
Yes you’re right, the 12ui battery sucks! But, that’s is the main difference with it and the new “12ui FreePlay” (not yet available, but coming later this month; Shawn got an early one to review it for CZcams).

I am a relatively new cuber that got into this for my students. I have a GAN12 and I have been waiting for this release. I was just wondering if the app has a training mode to help teach you CFOP algs. Being a teacher with other life commitments I have been mainly using the beginner method. I was wondering if this could help train algs so I can learn CFOP quicker. Summer project 😅
I don't remember if it has default algorithms, but there is for sure at least a way to input the algorithms you want to learn and use the algorithm trainer on those.
Yes it does have training section and algs, lots of them. You can also create your own and save them.

You can train and memorize algs using the alg training feature, but I'm not sure the default algs are the "best" ones out there. But using the App sure beats memorizing them with a regular cube and having to fix mistakes on your own, and as others pointed out, you can change the algs for each case and add your own alg sets to train as well.
The timer feature also lets you start and stop at an arbitrary stage, so if you want to do a session of only solving the cross, or just OLL, or just last layer (OLL + PLL), you can do it. I haven't tried making my own alg set to check if it's possible to use it with just the subsets you have already learned, as some training web apps do, but it's something you can try, if you think that would be useful to you.
The 356i v3 charger doesn't fit the GAN 12 UI (normal as well as free play).

Not at all. There is no reason that putting cube lubrication in a smart cube will harm it. Not only is it silicone based but the electronics are behind plastic.

I !iked the moyu wrm bluetooth cube until it stopped senseing some of the turns. The app sucked too but I used cubesst which made it fine. These days I have a monster go carry because I find the more expensive Bluetooth cubes are just not worth it. There are too many variables, the cube might feel amazing or whatever but the mechanism could be messed up like with the WRM. If you're dropping $80 on Bluetooth cube and you think it's going to last you a long time and it doesn't then you're out 80 bucks. The difference between the 12ui and the monster go is negilable as a result.

I've had mine for a few weeks. I don't know if they adjusted the cube, but mine came with the PowerPod. I can't say that mine feels exactly like my other Gan cubes however. The unit I got is very fast and flimsy feeling. For the price I paid for mine, I was pretty disappointed. Maybe the unit you got is different from the unit I got however.

can you do a video reviewing the best smaller puzzles? maybe 55mm-53mm? idk i’m struggling to figure out what i wanna get. so far i’m leaning towards the gan 354 but it’s supper old and has none of the new tech
The Gan 354 is a lot less stable than the Gan 11 Mini. I’ve had both at the same time and the Gan 11 Mini was easily my main. Good luck with your choice!

They changed it. They released the 12 ui, and then stopped. This is considered the 12 ui free play. Gan didn't ship the old one last year as they were already altering it.

So Ihave GAN i3 which I thought was the best there was. Unfortunelty it seems to be sooo blocky and stiff and slow... and now I found this, this is not available in my country but it seems like it's been out there for like a year or so? Did you try i3? Is this a realy a lot better cube or is it just a feeling i get from watching these?
I've used every Gan smart cube. The iCarry s is the good one with the built in battery. Gan ships around the world so it's available in every country.

Sadly, not in India but that's due to the political relationships between the two countries. And even if they did the custom duty we're charged could easily be even more than the cost of the cube itself.
All we can do is wait for the local cubing store to get this in stock which will probably take 2-3 months, sadly.

No such thing as "best settings" for any cube. If you don't know what you prefer, set everything to the highest or tightest and then adjust from there.

PRECISELY why I kept asking when they were going to officially acknowledge it. I feel bad for the poor folks who paid through the nose for unfinished prototypes...
Don't feel bad, it's like pre-ordering a game early in it's development stage or paying to be a beta tester (like with Tesla's "full self drive"). If you didn't understand the risks, sooner or later you'll learn a valuable lesson (or so I hope).
I took that gamble and decided to be one of the early buyers, but the gamble paid off this time. Sure, it's pricey and lots of people won't like it, just as lots of people don't think the current GAN flagship is worth their money. But to me it was totally worth it, as I do like the feel of GAN flagships and the 12ui feels pretty much like a regular cube, but it's also a smartcube.
For kids the price may be a big deal, but for adults with jobs this is no different than any other hobby. It's like buying a couple of AAA games near their release dates or an offroading weekend. It already provided me more hours of fun per dollar than pretty much all games I've bought in over a decade (Minecraft is possibly the sole exception), so for me at least, it was totally worth it.
@@gcolombelli lol let me rephrase... I pity the impatient fools that paid for unfinished HARDWARE. You gave plenty of examples of software but I don't foresee GAN offering to give all those early adopters a finalized version of the physical product now that it's actually completed.
@@DimebagDan81 What makes hardware "unfinished"? The product is out there and it works not only fine, but way better than anything else in the market. Maybe they're not super confident it's polished enough for general release at that price-point, but there's no clear cut definition on what we should consider "unfinished"...
Tesla is an example of a company that has a long tradition of aiming for a Minimal Viable Product and it has worked great for them for many years as they were "pioneers" in a way. Now everyone is on the EV and PHEV market and it's not clear if they can still get away releasing MVPs or if that will cost them market share (it sure seems like it's already doing that). And I wouldn't call the 12ui an MVP either.
To me, personally (you are welcome to disagree), I would call "unfinished" something that was rushed out and released without advertised features/functionality, or with crippling performance issues that render it unsuitable for it's practical use. None of that criteria applies to the GAN 12ui, at least for me.
It could be better? Sure. But this is *not* a rushed product, GAN delayed it's release so much it's was already "obsolete" when it was released... it still uses the GAN 12 as it's base model instead of the current GAN 13, and in about 6 months there will be a new generation flagship.
If anything, I would call it a "failure to market" like the Apple Lisa or the IBM PS/2 MCA line and we may see a later, improved smartcube that feels like the "finished" version, or maybe a revised product at a more appealing price point. But it seems to me as arbitrary as calling the regular GAN 12 an "unfinished product" because the GAN 13 is so much better.
The only complaints I heard about it was:
a) it's too expensive, I'm not sure there are many people who would shell out that much money for an smartcube
b) it feels too flimsy like other GAN cubes, I prefer QiYi/MoYu/other brand
So far I haven't heard anyone complain that it:
a) doesn't deliver on performance or features
b) has serious flaws that make them unusable
c) is completely different than what they thought it would be based on product advertisement/description
But that's just like, you know, my opinion, man, and you can just ignore it if you don't like it. But out of curiosity, have you seen the opinion of other people who already tried this cube?
Man I hope this is good lol. The Icarry kinda sucks, and the moyu ai cube doesn't have the app support. Gan seems to be cornering the Bluetooth cube market
If you use roux what cube will be yourr main
I do use roux. The cube does not really matter for method. There are not really Roux Cubes and CFOP cubes.

Settings adjust with how I'm feeling that day. I suggest when anyone is resetting up a cube to set everything on the tightest and then just back up from there if it's too tight. Tighter is better than looser for most all puzzles.
Cube has a tensioning tool and non removable caps? This is strange.
The caps removed. I was just having trouble with it.
The "robot" center caps are harder to take off than regular ones, as they have less room for your fingernails to pry them from the center pieces, but overall, I found the ones on the 12ui easier to take off than the ones on the i2 and the i Carry, but YMMV.
