- Small boats have the best parties!
- A couple of maritime festivals near where I live - including navigating between the rock stacks of the Tas de Pois, where I was nearly ran down and then capsized, last time I made the passage.

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again before the present Brexit trade restrictions were imposed.* The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3

Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:
www.chasse-maree.com/revue/
Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):
www.leboncoin.fr
*Since January 2021, due to Brexit, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, must pay VAT and other duties on the import.

When ive had a rough day and i come home and Roger has posted another video i can feel the stress just fade away ..in a mad world this seems like a safe place cheers mate ,
Thank you Roger, for another well filmed and very well edited video. Absolutely enjoyable as usual.
Abbey looks like she's experienced in modern racing dinghies, obviously understood what was going on more than most.
one of your best blogs ever, liked the part when you followed the Pilot cutter through the rocks
A real sail fest that one. Spent most of the time marveling over the rigging of all those boats. And wondering at just how you manage camera placement while dodging rocks! Thankyou.
Great footage with many interesting boats, like the Belouga in Camaret. It’s a blessing to be able to sail in such a seascape and in those conditions! Thank you for sharing! 😎
What a wonderful collection of sailing events. I’m looking forward to attending a few this winter in Florida. And congratulations on rounding the cape safely.
……and no capsize! Well done. Wonderful footage of beautiful boats.
Thanks again Roger. Further examples of how the world should be.
Really wonderful Roger and it seems that all is back to normal once again. It’s so nice to see all those beautiful little boats in that place. Thanks for your efforts in bringing a piece of it to us.
I would really love to participate one day in the future with my own Penny Fee dinghy ! Had once the honor to participate as crew member ( guest ) of the Sant Efflamm (medieval leather boat)!
I love the simplicity of the design of Avel Dro.
Never disappointed with your videos, Roger. This is another great one! Looks like much fun!!! The sound quality of this video seemed sharper than usual. I loved the way we could hear the water along the hull when you were passing between the rocks. Excellent sound quality!!! Thank you for taking us along!!!
Thank you! I have a constant battle with sound quality.
Another wonderful adventures, thank you.
Another lovely adventure! Thank you continuing to inspire!
Looks like a lot of fun!
Thank you Roger for taking us along on your adventures.
It was wonderful to see all the interesting boats up close.
Love it. Never stop Roger.
Great. Great sound too.
It's a great feeling to see you have posted another video, and as always, it was so good. Love your tacking, and that all you need is one sail.
How beautiful all these boats are!
Thank you, for taking us along.
Certainly got interesting cruising grounds over there! Great as always!
Thanks, another great video. The start with all those boats clustered together sailing was just stunning.
Absolument magnifique !!
Quelles images splendides ! Bravo et merci pour ce partage !
Nice flotillas, enjoyable, thank you
Another excellent adventure … well done! I like the stable horizon videos … very nice. Hold Fast! ⛵️😀
Very nice trip 👍
At the end of a bad day, your video made me smile. Thank you. Roger :-)
Superb!
Good to see you back on the water
Brilliant video as always Roger. Watching from here in Poole Dorset
Hello from the Great Lakes! Roger, you are more and more at home! What a beautiful voyage you are on, thank you.
So many beautiful boats 🙂
Roger you did I it again. Congrats. Good to see you sailing.
A great collection of traditional sailing vessels. This was a very enjoyable video.
thank you so much, these videos are so good for my soul , 😎🖐💙
Merci Roger , reportages toujours intéressants et canots magnifiques , la vraie belle marine traditionnelle !
Another awesome video Roger, great work, nice and relaxing, that said I had a bit of a laugh at the outrage in your voice when you saw the boat that nearly hit you last time, glad there was no capsize this time!
Nice video. I enjoyed it very much.
Another great video Roger, looks a beautiful place to sail especially with all those lovely boats sailing with you.
Hope Abigail enjoyed her first night boat camping 👍.
Thanks for sharing 😊.
Beautiful video
Thank you for your lovely film, beautiful pictures of a lovely place, peacefully ‘making miracles!’
So gorgeous.
Thanks for the video. Earlier today I saw a small Balinese outrigger canoe with a sail the same color as yours. Don't often see traditional boats here using sails these days even though they're designed for sail, except for the annual race in East Bali that's really fun to watch.
Magnificent.
Thank you, great production. Once again we see the dinghy equaling or bettering the speed, and perhaps joy of sailing, larger craft.
Fantastic
Merci very beaucoup, Roger
Helllo Roger. Fantastic video.
This was very cool, lots of sailing and different boats, you looked like you were loving it, fuddy duddy little man my ass, your a real sailor.
Great video as always Roger. Your channel is sure growing. I remember when we were few. Good job.
I wonder whether my videos are too slow though? Other people’s seem to have got faster, with much closer cuts.
@@RogerRoving your style is what we like. That’s why your channel has grown so much. Don’t worry about the naysayers. Keep up the good work.
Some fabulous sailing Roger - thank you. Amelie Rose what a lovely boat! A cutter?
Nice one Roger. Boy, the French know how to build a pretty boat do they not? Cheers from Bridgetown West Australia. Just coming into spring. Time to go sailing once more.
All your videos are fantastic, but 10:30-14:55 of this video is absolutely superb!!! You’ve outdone yourself. Great film-making! Thank you, Roger!!!
Tell everyone that, please! Loads of people seem to be put off from watching this by the French title!
no no, watch up to 15:15, don't miss that magnificent jibe up to the pontoon/dock!! The man with his girl sculling (in the background) can't take his eyes off of Roger! Nicely done - it's what we all want to do but many haven't the confidence. Much like at 20:50 - 22:15 in Avel Dro in Vince! -- Bravo --
Beautiful! Do you have any tips on gybing an Ilur in fresh breezes? Thanks for another great video.
nice one
Nice one, Roger. Yes, I was one of the people trying to stop you getting into Lanvéoc before beaching. I then left you in peace.
Great to see your videos..
Great video again Roger. Quick question, how come you don't use a bridle for your mainsheet?
Well done Roger, keep it up looking very spritely, and don't worry about comments of jealousy cause that starts to come when you get a bit famous.
You have tough skin for reading some uncool and some insanely repetitive comments, I hope. Your videos are very special to this Georgia USA ancient mariner! Please stay the course!
Another fucking excellent little video!
Il me semblais bien avoir vu un bateau correspondant au votre pendant la fete des bateaux de douarnenez.
Peut-être c’était moi !
Thank you for a great film. As an old sailor have I notised that you tackle for the mail sail needs to be hooked from side to side, suggestion instal a tube from side to side over the stearing so the tackle for the main sail can go automatickly from side to side. uicker and safer sailing. Thank again for your inspiring film! / Arne
It would conflict with the single piece lifting rudder though.
@@RogerRoving Hi again you might instal the pape so you can remove it before lifting the rudder. All the best /Arne
@@arnefagerstrom7851 I would not be able to remove the tiller - needs lifting to remove. Anyway, why is a horse an advantage?
I'd hate to see what people here would say about my leeboard....
Sailing between those two rocks le tas de pois... F that !! I'd have gone round 🙃
Merci Roger!
great video as always... but please add some musical variety...
Great video as usual. What do you use to keep the horizon steady when filming in a bouncing boat?
Modern GoPros do it all by themselves!
@@RogerRoving I thought that might be the case. Thanks for the confirmation. Keep up the good work. Having watched all your videos multiple times, I was inspired to buy a Paul Gartside Yaquina Bay One-Design oak and mahogany 14 footer lug sail day boat. Happy days.
Mr. Barnes, your friend Abigail seems not to be very familiar with a sailing vessel. Ms. Dooley, on the other hand, knows her ropes, obviously.
What distance did you travel?
I know there is safety in numbers. but I think after see this I would sail alone.🤔🤔
what kind of gaff sloop is it at 2:18?
Use two bungee cords to keep your tiller in the middle while preoccupied by other things!
He usually does.
If you look carefully under his tiller there is a Huntington helm impeder installed. A very simple and elegant device.
❤🧡💚🖤
Amerly Rose. That's the British for you.
Loved the video, as always.
Also, have been meaning to ask: what is the music?

Honest question, why are sailboats constantly on a collision course with each other? It's like a giant game of chicken out there.
Exciting editing !
What's the music?
Everything is in the video description.
As I Yankee, I can attest that Englishmen point with their middle finger because the index nail is blackened by some other chore.
Top notch video and sailing. Thank you, Roger.
In my next life i want to be Roger
Jour de fete? Non ! Ici "les Vacances de Monsieur Barnes", n'est ce pas?
Typical, you see it everywhere, the bloke standing around being 'captain' and the little woman doing all the hard physical work, 14m 30s, female sculling.....
Nothing changes, in the mid 80's I lived in a house overlooking the Royal Cornwall YC, the number of boats picking up moorings with the boss bawling out orders to the 'wife' on the foredeck with the boathook..... I'd make the lot of them watch the film 'Dead Calm'....
Or maybe she wanted to scull.
Don't you dare feign bewilderment when your crew sets you loose in a teacup! Acting exasperated at her slowness to figure what you want is classic passive aggression. And ,if you are going to grunt and complain every time you switch your main sheet block from side to side, put in a traveller. My friend Sam tried to explain who you were to tell me he watched some of your videos. I said"Oh!Little Fuddy-Duddy Man ?" "Yes! That's him!"he replied. Now to achieve some balance; I love your boat and the places you go are gorgeous and your knowledge of them is expansive. Just remember that an angry woman might might find a novel use for a fid,say marlinspike shemanship.
