Zain's effort, fighting back through the loser's bracket, needing all 4 wins in 4 hours, to place 3rd and take the last olympic qualifier spot at 65kg (5kg lower than his World Championship weight class), was absolutely legendary. Couldn't be more proud to have THAT dude representing my country.
For Zain Retherford to go 6-1 over two days at this level of competition, at almost 6 pounds below his college wrestling weight, is nothing short of amazing. Zain Retherford is a beast. Bring home the gold, Zain!
I believe hes gonna do it!🥇Lets go team USA🇺🇸
Before he was famous in MMA, Chael made a run at the Olympics in Greco and was top 3 or 4 in the US a couple of times in World Team and Olympic Team trials . He is the real deal with street cred on this topic.
I feel like people forget that about some MMA fighters. Some of the best UFC fighters have legit international credentials.
Hahaha yeah he made a run and didn't win anything 💀💀 just like his UFC career always choked lol you glazers are wild
@@OnlyMyOpinionMattersyou got it wrong there. The haters are the ones that are wild.
@@Xivinux ok what are his best UFC wins and over who
@@OnlyMyOpinionMattersChael conquering your mother should be viewed as a big win. At least by you...
Chael, get after the Olympic Committee to expand Men’s Freestyle to 8 or 10 weight classes. It’s overdue
Been watching the Olympic trails/games since 2012 and as much as I love the world championships cuz of the extra weight classes, we’re looking for the absolute pinnacle and highest level athlete to represent our nation and bring back a medal, we need less weight classes to prove who’s the absolute very best I love the 10 weight classes but for the Olympics it makes sense to thin out the weight classes to find the best in our nation
@@Antonio00408I think the issue is that other sports like track and field and swimming have so many events that either they should be thinned or wrestling expanded
In theory, you're right, but there is such a big difference in the weight classes that so many guys ate stuck in the middle
What are you talking about bro ski
The rule makers turned it into a leg lace/gut wrench contest. Casual fans don’t get it so they are killing their own popularity
There's actually only 16 in an olympic bracket.
So really crazy hard
We now have all 6 weight classes represented at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Go Team USA! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
damn bro i literally see you everywhere, chael, fanco, flo, truetran. impressive
Zain came from my little high school pretty cool to see what he did i used to wrestle him all the time
Chael, Zain was also a cadet world champ.
“I want no inquiries made. I want no acts of vengeance. I want you to arrange a meeting, with the heads of the Five Families. This war stops now”.
Come on Chael, do this line for me🙏
Chael in agreement with Noah Lyles on the "world championship" title.
"The guy with the most points wins, everytime. " Unless your name is Cary Kolat
They did kolat so dirty. I cant believe they got away with that
Uncle Chael got the US team sounding like real life heros
They are beasts every one is incredible. The US should do pretty well.
More than most pro athletes that get treated that way
Really appreciate your wrestling content. Thanks for doing what you do.
Uncle Chael is at his peak whenever he talks about Olympic wrestling
That diploma to his right got a quick chuckle out me. My man’s still never lost a round.
All six weights is a big deal. USA, USA.....
Uncle Chael! Do more wrestling talk, you’ll help grow the sport. I know my 9 year old likes hearing you talk wrestling.
Doesn’t make sense that we do 10 weight classes for the world championships but only 6 for the Olympics.. miss out on a lot of good wrestling because of this. Take Vito for instence. He probably woulda been representing 61 kg for us. Love watching that dude wrestle
Chael I love these wrestling videos so much. I wish you’d do more of them. I’m sure if people got used to hearing the same names pop up, the casuals would be able to get invested. Especially on an Olympic year
Hearing this for the first time - really incredible to finally get this perspective
A year or two ago there was a meet that was going to include true 3rd place matches to determine who gets that team USA slot and those benefits. I know at least two guys didn't even show up to compete and I can't understand why. Help me understand.
Ya, I agree...this man knows how to wrestle. When I'm made King, I will have 10 weight classes and we will enter 3 men in each weight. 6 weights for the Games is pure BS........22 different swimming events and 2 men in each event.....44. We only get 6. Sux.
Am I the only one counting between every time he touches his glasses.. 😆
From the looks of the thumbnail. I thought Uncle Chael had some crazy braid going on 😂😂😂
Can you imagine CTE Chael? The guy would be a demon
I know and care. My small town had a set of twins make the 88 team. The Scheer brothers or "Seoul Brothers" Now with only 6 weights it's insane how hard it is to be #1 in the USA and every member has a shot at a medal.
Maybe he missed it but 16 countries can qualify... To qualify the weight: *5* Countries qualify via the 2023 Senior World Championships (September 16-24, 2023) -- "Now, the losers of each bronze medal match will wrestle off with an Olympic qualifying spot on the line." so 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th qualify and the winner of the two who were trying to get to the bronze match qualifies. That's 5 countries. *8* Qualifiers From 4 Continental Tournaments (March - April 2024) -- Top 2 from 4 different tournaments: Pan-Am, Asian, African, and European continental Olympic qualifying tournaments. That's 13 countries that qualify. Then *3* qualifiers From 2024 World Olympic Qualifier (May 2024): The two finalists automatically qualify their country and don't even wrestle each other. The third place winner qualifies their country. 16 total countries. Injuries and other things can obviously affect qualifying the weight.
One minor quibble Chael with the original premise with regard to the selection of representative nations. Politics certainly DOES play a role in this process. Note that Russia won’t be represented in Paris and Russian athletes will be forced to participate under some “unified team” nonsense without their flag.
And they just banned sadulaev 😢
Ik this is unrelated but I would like to hear a piece on Joaquin Buckley winning in his hometown of stl, Chael usually says there is no “home court advantage” but I think it hypes the fighter up more in some cases. It’s an interesting topic to say the least
10 weights!!! It’s just not fair to the tweeners going up and down.
"Bratha don't rush, don't rush, don't rush, PLEASE don't rush"
You are right on. From a Beav ❤
Chael, anyone who is top 5 at worlds is qualified for the Olympics (well their country not them personally). The reason Zain wasn’t qualified is because he won worlds at a non Olympic weight class.
It's not that they are or are not the best wrestler today. It's that they earned the spot for the country. If you want to take that spot you need to prove that it's more than you just had more points on the board at the end of a single match.
Love ya chael🩷
I follow wrestling, but I admit this topic throws me. I sort of caught why Spencer had to qualify, sort of. I didn't Zain. Why not Aaron Brooks? Does beating DT get him that spot even though he's not DT? Whatever. The 6 weight classes bother me though. It needs to be 10. Daton Fix, for example, is a tweener. He's not a 125 lbs guy. He's a 133/134 lbs guy. 134 being the international weight in pounds. But that weight doesn't wrestle. The cut is too much for him to be his pound for pound best. That bothers me more. Not really being about Daton...just in general. J'Den was most likely affected by not having 92Kg. Vito didn't show up...but I think that is largely due to 125 being too low. We're missing some killers not just because of fewer weight classes, but because of wrong weight classes. Vito and Daton would be a battle that Spencer might have trouble if they were all at 134, because they're depleted at 125, and strong at 134. Spencer is strong at 125. That's why there are weight classes. There are more Russians, Iranians, etc as well who we aren't seeing. We need 10 weight classes for the Olympics to live up to what it is supposed to be in one of the few foundational Olympic sports. Modern popularity can go F itself. You don't cancel or scale back wrestling in the Olympics if they are going to be the actual Olympics.
Did the USA qualify all the weight classes for freestyle and grecco.
Zahid really beat brooks
singlet grab
@@LakeNonaFan zahid is better than brooks
@@Btc_bott probably not, remember when he beat zahid last year at the us open? Plus he just beat david taylor twice
I wrestled at 94.5 lbs and 103lbs in USA wrestling for the USA pounders with Camilo gonzalez and luis and carlos blanco. Those 3 dudes whopped my ass in practice daily. Butni dominated my weight classes. Lost 2 matches in 3 years. Good times
So you came here to tell everyone you were a practice dummy? Awesome.
@saljablo2767 they were just that much better than me and heavier. They were 112 and 119. Either way, you couldn't even last week at our gym. We would smash your crew.
More wrestling content uncle chael
So poetic
The Dream Team of basketball killed the integrity of the Olympics; for me.
Is this subtly about DT not going 100% against Brooks?
My theory no one asked for: if Zahid beat Brooks, DT mops the floor with Zahid and goes to the olympics. But since Brooks made the finals, DT was willing to pass the torch. Not hand him the matches per se, but let the dog in him take a little rest.
Also not saying Brooks doesn't deserve the spot or didn't earn it, just saying I believe in the moment DT felt ok moving on.
He said in an interview after the OK press conference that his competitive fire had started to dim in the past year.
Zahid got robbed big time
@@fiddynutz68 agreed it was a bs call
Chael,, this is important, please read! I checked the official UFC hall of fame and you aren't in in the list! Throw some weight at UFC to update their website so people know you are in the hall of fame! (PS: the other latest ufc hall of famer isnt in the list ether. UFC needs to synchronize their announcements with source material.)
Chael, Inc.
my GOAT
Doubt id say retherford or nolf are the meanest
im sorry Uncle Chael, I tried, i held on for 10 minutes but truthfully, I could not care less
2 minutes in and he’s already wrong 16 man brackets chael
UFC need to let college wrestler level on up wrestler use the P.I. Center
That would be a cool collab between UFC and USA wrestling
A year, in wrestling, makes you ask... who is the proverbial "current" Zane; by right? Wrestling entertainment is allowed to say wrestling anymore.
Spencer got a TF in under a minute in his first round match. His match vs Zou you're referencing was 2nd round.
Wasnt zou semi finals?
@@Btc_bott no 2nd round
@@andygnatovich oh thank you
Aren't there only 16 wrestlers in each weigh in the Olympics???
Yeah it is 16, I think that's one detail Chael has mistaken.
Also, Zane was world champ at 70kg, not 65, making it more impressive that he did what he did this year with the cut he had to go through
It's a Heraclen concept... is my guess.
I thought chael had ponytails in the thumbnail.
It needs to go back to 10 weight divisions. Every fan and wresler needs to shout at the I.O.C. President that wants to totally cut wrestling for a sport that is for 19th century calvery officer.
16 man bracket chael! Even smaller
Chael sounding more and more like “ Vito Corleone” with that voice. If he just slowed down a bit he’d be a dead ringer
Great
But I heard breakdancing is an olympic sport now lol.
Can we pull Uncle Chael outta retirement for team USA USA USA!
I don’t get how Austin Gomez and RBY can get there from Pan Ams but USA can’t qualify that way
The us wrestlers that went to pan Ams didn't place high enough to qualify
@@nicogonzales2503 so Lee or Gilman couldn’t place ahead of Gomez or RBY? Who’d we send at 57kg?
Correction Zain over Gomez?
Because the US rep at the pan ams Nick Lee lost to Gomez at the Pan Ams
@bartmcdowell8349 Zane Richards went at 57. He was the defending world team rep so it was his spot. Gilman, Fix, and Vito were all eligible to challenge him for that spot but all 3 declined. Spencer had not done enough at the senior level yet to be eligible to challenge for the spot.
Why no MMA in Olympics?
Gunna have to disagree with you on the NFL championship. The best players from around the world go to teams in the US. The NFL is the platform for world championship
With that reasoning any foreigner can win a world championship as long as they join a team that’s not in their country.
The NFL is a national competition. I would say that less than 1% of its players are not American. And even if it was more, it’s still a National competition. You can’t call yourself a world champion when all the teams that are competing are from the same nation.
Seriously why aren't you playing Johnny Cage?? I've been saying you would be a perfect Johnny Cage if u ever got into acting. #ChealIsJohnny 😂😂
Chael would win Gold in 24 if he competed
He already has. Both styles.
I wish Bart would weigh in on tnis
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tell me Chael….
Let’s go Mason
Mason doesn’t have a shot to be honest. He’s the least likely to medal out of all the boys.
Ok buddy
@@shannonhamilton9513 whoa. No need for name calling
Zou from China did not get “destroyed” by Lee. He did the bulk of the scoring. He just got caught in an ankle lace, a cheap move that should be eliminated from freestyle wrestling; or at least limited to one turn. Lee was definitely not dominant outside of an ankle lace.
Couldn’t listen to more than 10 seconds
FIRST!!!!
Nope 😂
Annoying...
