I did this the other day with a 20 year old generator gas tank, filled it with apple cider vinegar and left it for 3 days. Flushed it with baking soda and flushed it out with fresh water. I then heated my BBQ to about 600F, turned the flames off, it's large enough to put the tank in and close the cover it dried out very quickly. I got amazing results for not much money! Once the tank cooled I filled it with fuel so little chance of it rusting for a while. I had my doubt's watching this video but it works a treat! Thanks 👍🏻

  • @monochromaticlightsource9153

My two cents worth, last tank I did had been lined, but lined over the rust of before. I put Acetone in to dissolve the liner, then Spirits of Salts, much more agressive than Cider vinegar, but the liner turned into a substance similar to blutack. I had to pour in the Acetone, slosh it round, pour it out, and filter it to remove the sludge, pour it back in, slosh, repeat, and do it again for three days. Result was a clean tank that was rusty.
Pour in the Spirits of Salts, slosh, and pour it out. The tank is clean, the metal is grey, but flash rusts as you watch.
The secret is to pour out the Hydrochloric Acid, wash with fresh water to remove and neutralise the Acid, pour in Acetone neat, ( Lots) and slosh straight away. Then pour out the Acetone, and pour in as much boiling water as your kettle will hold, and then rotate the tank to heat it up. Pour out the now cooling water, and put more Acetone in the tank. As the tank has now cooled; pour out the Acetone, and in goes Engine oil, at least a pint. Slosh it round, and you can relax for now. Wash out the Oil with gasoline, and if you got out all the rust, you're good to go.
When you fill up the tank with gas, it will dilute the oil, and provide an upper cylinder lubricant as it goes through the system.
    That's the theory at least.

I notice on many of these videos there's confusion between a heavily fouled tank with fuel residue and rust. I had both on a GT650, so a
Gentler touch. Hot water, and then oxy clean, and using that as a electrolysis. It took a month but all heavy rust removed but pitted. So coated with Caswell epoxy which is inert to alcohol.

I just watch another video just like yours the guy used apple cider vinegar. Left in there 3 days. Took out some of the rust but not all. The tank was not usable . I have been trying the Electrolysis method , Battery charger water and salt. One batch I added apple cider vinegar. I was using the electrolysis method while doing this, So it was mixed with water. No great results. After 30 min the water looks Nasty. Foaming up kind of looks like a big dirty sponge. So I have been doing this for 3 days. But after screwing around with it changing the water ect. Perhaps 24 hr run time. I used a 1/2 drive Extension that went to my socket set. Now it is about the size of a small ink pen. About 30 min ago I checked it and all the big chunks of rust seem to be gone, still not usable. I may try straight apple cider vinegar after this to get the fine rust.

  • @mrgcav
    @mrgcav Před rokem

    MUCH BETTER METHOD:
If tank interior is heavily rusted then fill tank 1/2 full with abrasive or clean gravel. Double seal all holes with Duct tape and rubber compression plugs. Wrap tank in two heavy moving blankets and rope or zipties.
Then tumble tank for 2 -5 hours in a clothes dryer to remove all loose scale. Tumbling is a slow process. Then wash inside of the tank with a Degreaser like 409 and distilled water. Rinse well.
Evaporust is reusable, no odor, nontoxic and does not harm metal or paint. So Evaporust in the long run is way cheaper than one use vinegar. Evaporust will not cause flash re-rust if you rinse with distilled water. Let dry and treat with interior with OSPHO. Ospho is also reusable. Ospho is special mild Phosphoric acid that turns the metal surface into Iron Phosphate. Iron Phosphate will not rust. Rinse well with a gallon or two of Distilled water. Use a hair dryer to dry out the tank fast.
Seal the tank: Plug all holes except one. Fill tank with 1/8 to 1/4 full of silver or white POR. (Do not use black POR) Rotate the tank several times to coat the inside and dump out the excess POR. Let harden overnight. WILL NEVER RUST AGAIN.
Exterior: Wipe with Ospho Three times. then apply POR.
NOTE: Tap water has minerals that promote the formation of rust. DO NOT USE TAP WATER.

Ive used white vinegar in the past and maybe the apple has less issues with flash rust? when Ive used the white, it flash rusts insanely bad. literally within seconds you can start to see a brown haze form over. just speculating

Concrete cleaner = Muriatic acid. Very good to remove rust, but it attacks metal as well, so don't leave it in there for more than a few hours or you will be soldering pinholes!
