My Mum just became a widow this last Monday. She stayed bedside on vigil at hospice with my sister, who stayed with her the whole time.
So she's cared for and buried both parents, and now her husband and my father.

Pichard Colon's story is not talked about much, that man was a true warrior, a man who had everything looks, charm and a pure soul. everyone let him down that day in the fight against the physcopath named Terell Williams, The referree, the doctor, heck the commentators let him down, his soul was taken way intentionally. Its been 8 years since, miraculously, this warrior is recovering. Nothing but a warrior. ❤

I quit boxing... I was 17, fighting a 26-year-old. From the very first punch he threw, which was his hardest shot, it gave me concussion. I went through the entire fight just remembering about three moments. I then get walked out the ring by some people... I asked "did I get knocked out?" they said no... "Did I win?" They said no... "Did I go through the entire fight?" Everyone started laughing saying that I haven't got a clue what's happening. I lost my memory. I seen my girlfriend at the time had text me and I didn't know who she was. She phoned me immediately after I asked her how long has it been since we spoke (I thought we broke up and that it had been about 6 months). It turns out I spoke to her just before the fight.
Boxing is no joke. The training is amazing as it keeps you super fit and healthy, but don't fight... It's not worth it.

Hello David , I hope you are fully recovered .Wow it is amazing how dangerous can be even boxing with those gloves , I recently watched a movie starring Will Smith and is about CTE on American football . Human brain is not done for that basically ,brain collides against the skull and things can get very bad ,greetings from Spain!!
@@Andrew-zr1jt Much appreciated. I'm absolutely fine now. The thing with gloves is that it actually makes it more dangerous. Because it is a large surface area, it rattles the brain more. Without the gloves there's serious external injury, but with the gloves there's serious internal injury. That's why people typically die due to boxing and not UFC.

Most men don’t want a good wife it’s all talk. The good ones they have they will take advantage of them to the fullest and chase after others. I truly believe men who end up with men who left them in this situation most of the time is their karma because usually they always had a woman in their life that was good to them but they took someone else.

I’m 46 I played very competitive Hockey, got to the minor leagues for a bit. I’m 6’3” 255 and fought a lot. I had 5 concussions before 21. I also had a passion for Judo and competitive at the state level. I was a good athlete and took care of myself. I also crossed trained with Greco Roman, BJJ, Sambo… I coached grappling to some great professionals becuase I started in 1990 and had experience before MMA got popular.
Today… I’m awaiting to have both hips replaced. My right shoulder has been replaced in 2015. My left knee is 4 years past replacements. I also am awaiting vein surgery on both lower legs. I have valve failure and it’s causing major issues. I contracted staph in a small cut mid shin left leg. So much scar tissue on my shins because of fighting. It’s paper thin. I was in the hospital for a week in October due to a nasty Mrsa infection.
The wound hasn’t healed due to the lack of blood flow. I have had wound care every weeks since then. I can’t even shower.
In judo I suffered a few hard shots but the pain being thrown and landing wrong. My hips took a lot of damage. They won’t do the surgery until the wound are healed. Bone infection will kill me.
I suffered 3 more concussions teaching and rolling with guys who wanted to prove “Judo” isn’t good. For MMA. Spastic idiots would loose control and I was cracked with up kicks twice due to “accidental” contact while grappling. The last was letting a new guy try a throw and he did a completed diffrent throw and I landed hard… I though I died.
I lost my breathe when I landed and he jumped in me and did a north south choke and cranked my head. I heard a pop and the would went black.. keep in mind we were not doing submissions. My good friend saw it and came running. I could hear or see for 3 minutes. I was able to move but it felt like I was on fire. My friend punched the guy to get him to let me go…
He was a BJJ brown and didn’t like a Judo guy could tap him. He attacked me and tried hurting me. My buddy laid his ass out. They rushed me to the hospital and I was diagnosed with a concussion and swelling in my spine.
Today is suffer. I need crutches to walk. I can use the bathroom due to the pain of muscle contractions. I have mood swings, I cry a lot and I’ve tried taking my life by over dosing.
Today I have gotten help and hope all will get back to 1/2 normal some day soon. I hope so, I’ve lost everything and all my relationships fail due to my moods..

My oldest son, at the time he was 11-14 years old, training with one of the world's top (olympic) boxing coaches, he was very talented when training but didn't want to spar another person and take hits, told him he didn't have to, just do it for fitness and self defense if needed. Looking back now he's 22, incredible young man, I'm glad I listened to him then. He still played AA hockey, told him no on football due to head injuries. God bless all who compete and suffer.

Pritchard Colon. He was in a coma after a boxing match in 2015 where he was repeatedly rabbit punched. He was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state when he woke up, but they later determined that he was locked in his body but cognizant and able to communicate using his eyes. He has made some progress with basic communication and can walk short distances with help, but is still in really bad shape.
His story to this day haunts me. I get that these fighters go in the ring knowing the dangers, but how Colon's opponent intentionally robbed him of a normal life is evil.

This video makes me further appreciate Floyd Mayweather's way of boxing and his explanation for it. He once said in an interview how when he finally retires that he wants to still be able to get around on his own, speak clearly, and play with his kids. Many fighters are lucky if they can do any of that once their career is over.

That’s the goal for a lot of fighters….unfortunately most don’t have the $ to stop and/or think they can’t do anything else. MayWeather was fortunate to have so much money, his great grandkids will be set for life
Amateurs unfortunately get to take unreal amounts of damage because of the amateur refs not having the skill, knowledge or ability to protect the fighters in the ring. MMA and boxing have this issue. Some of the most brutal finishes I've ever seen were amateur vs amateur fights. Nobody wants to acknowledge the mental health aspect but it's very real. I grew up with a granite chin, good BJJ, and a fighters spirit. At 37 n big into motorcycle racing, I'm terrified of my next concussion. CTE is very real. It's honestly not worth it. And I like many wanted to be a champion. CTE just isn't worth it
I think mma fighter's in the future will have a lot of these health issues. Getting hit with elbows and knees does a lot more damage than padded gloves.

I've trained martial arts for nearly 20 years. I got hit in the head too much for sure in my youth. Glad I had the realization around 26 that it isn't worth it. I only drill reactions and counters now. I don't spar hard and I only spar with people I trust. Spend more time training grappling and just hitting thai pads and mitts.

The amount of time I train (muay thai) is only half yours, but I stop after sometimes my head does micro-movements without my control. Indeed, spar partners are often carried away by emotions and can't control their power. I only train for fitness, so I don't feel it's worth risking nerve damage.
At that time my best friend was still practicing, even participating in amateur tournaments. He used to want to be a professional. Someday he had bad luck, he was beaten until he lost consciousness, ending in a 6 month coma. After waking up, he became a different person. He has not lost all of his memory and can still walk, but has difficulty communicating. He has a hard time understanding what people are saying.
What was sad was that the first prize for the amateur tournament was just a medal and a smartphone for around $400. The cost he spent on the hospital is around $40k.
Now my exercises are crossfit and dirt bikes, no more body contact.

This is, unfortunately, how most MMA fighters will end. There's a reason why champions in MMA only last a couple of years, max.
moral of the story : don't ever take your physical and mental health for granted, regardless of your age. if the mind and body and willing, put in the effort to look after both, because they are the only things you are brought into this world with.

As a golden gloves boxer I can tell you that if you think after a fight you are just gonna go out party and continue on with your life you are deceiving yourself. Your whole body is sore, your face hurts, breathing hurts it takes you weeks to recuperate. I stopped boxing because of that. I can box and I was winning fights, but the after effects were just so draining ,exhausting and painful that it wasn't worth it for me.

I think that when people say "big respect to these warriors" are biggest reason why these accidents happen. Most of us men are egoists and we love if people call us "warriors" respect us. That makes men to go this sports. But actually they are compact sport athletes not warriors. Warriors are in war for the shake of good of nations not for gaining a medal in a sport. The biggest reasons are negligence, complacency and a lack of due diligence. Loving the fight game, the biggest most final display in 1v1 combat competition of physical dominance is the same as any other dream one may have. Most fighters make it out just fine but then there’s the tragic stories like in this vid.
Fighters can raise their chances of retiring without brain injuries by having management/a corner that listens to them when they think something’s wrong, they themselves have to notice issues and choose to address them and not blow them off and then taking medical steps to monitor their health w heart and brain scans taken and compared regularly. At any sign of issues stop the fighting until your doc thinks it’s been handled sufficiently and you’re not in danger.
And even after taking all those precautions freak incidents can still occur. It just comes w the territory and all fighters know about and accept that risk. Bcuz they love competing in it.
So it’s not being called warriors and modern day gladiators that is the cause of these accidents. It’s pure negligence of multiple parties, and sometimes a bit of bad luck.

Never heard the Magomed story surprisingly, it's absolutely infuriating that the people working at that event were so incompetent. That's the one thing I like about the UFC they tend to send guys to the hospital just in case more often than not.
And so they should. They make plenty of money off the fighters, the least they can do is give them regular scans and health checks. They won't offer to much help though, they'll be more worried about being held legally responsible than the health of their fighters

I worked ems for UFC fight night a couple years ago. As soon as the fight ends they immediately see doctors backstage for a head to toe physical. Out of 12 fights from that night, I brought 12 athletes to the nearby trauma center after the doctors’ evaluations. These guys endure so much more than the tv cameras show.
The UFC has turned their back on so many fighters who gave all in the ring and couldn't get health insurance: Spencer Fisher (one of my favs) and Tim Silva just to mention two.
@@bigdojima8434 they cover fight and training related medical expenses. Independent contractors always have to get their own insurance that's just how it works. As nice as it would be it wouldn't make much sense for them to just give guys lifelong insurance after they no longer even have contracts with the company.
Of all athletes, fighters tend to have it the worst when it comes to post career life.
The interaction between McClellan and Benn at the beginning of the video rips my heart out every time I see it. I haven’t finished watching this video, so I don’t know if it will contain more footage of that meeting. But just after Benn stands up and steps away, he goes to a secluded area and just breaks down. I can’t imagine, as a fighter, being responsible for throwing a punch or punches that cripples and nearly kills the other guy.
He can only blame himself so much...McClellan's coach should have listened to him, and the ref should have also stopped the fight. It's absolutely ridiculous that neither of them did.

my dad knew him growing up in the 80’s in Barrie when he was a teen. Gary was older than him but supposedly he was a really nice guy. Sad how he was effected post career but good to hear he has a family that cares for him

Any physical sport is. And it makes me wonder how SO MANY people still don't take head injuries seriously. I'm a hockey fan, and it amazes me how many fans still complain about it being 'soft.' When in reality, they just know more about head injuries now. I've even seen some people say 'they sign up for it and get paid for it.' But no. That's not true. They do not sign up for life long head injuries, and no money can fix that. Sure, they know the risk, but that doesn't mean that sports shouldn't take the precautions to lower the risk of head injuries.
Fighting can't exactly do that. Given the nature of it. But stuff like hockey and football, absolutely should continue to keep lower head injuries.

I worked freight with Ali’s sparring partner in Sacramento during the ‘90’s. His last name was Mc Murray. I can’t recall his first name. Super nice guy, still a badass. Once in a while he’d show us a little stuff.
Sadly, he was punch drunk to the point if pre disability. The bosses and other drivers kept an eye on him to help him out so that was cool. Everyone treated him with tenderness and respect because we all knew why he was the way he was. He went for it but didn’t make it. That’s more than most men can say.

I grew up practicing Hapkido and sparred every week on top of getting into a lot of street fights. Now my lower jaw aches all the time, one front lower tooth missing, constant pain in my feet from kicking too many things. I can't imagine what these guys are going though.

As a teenager i always loved violent martial arts such as kickboxing, muat thai, mma etc.
But with age and maturity, also through videos like this one, I’ve come to realize how foolish this is.

There are better options: wrestling/grappling, BJJ, judo.

Its hard to imagine what it would feel like being that guy in the 1st clip. Knowing that all you have done is what you and all fighters train for, but then permanently damaging somebody and them becoming disabled for the rest of their lives must do some bad mental damage. Even if nobody is at fault.
People were at fault. His corner ignored his pleas. The ref was incompetent. Don King was overbearing. Both fighters were done a disservice that day. Ben just did what he was trained to do.

Benn was destroyed over this fight the destroyer was destroyed because of negligence by others and mclelland himself almost stopped Benn in first round crazy

I wish I could do something to help or talk to them and tell them how amazing they are... This is the side of fighting they don't show us because it doesn't make them money. I think every fighter should have some sort of insurance so if something like this happens the promoters or whoever have to help pay the medical bills. Idk... Something...

We had a friend who was a MMA fighter and received many head injuries over the years and began hearing voices. Didn't last to long considering a shotgun blast to the head ended the voices. Rest in peace my friend. We miss you.

this is why i don't really down with the idea of UFC power slap, at least in combat sports you have your chance to defend yourself, block, evade, exchange or even reverse the damage and that's the beauty of it, but power slap is basically torturing human body, i'm not gonna surprise if someone gonna die after the event
Yess. A lot of us were commenting on the slap contest video about the same thing. People were trying to downplay it but it's a lot more dangerous than fighting. Taking heavy flush shots straight to the jaw with zero defense is a bad fucking idea.

For all of us who have played contact sports. We need to keep in mind what we have to look forward to. Take care of yourself. I, for one, played football from the age of 7 to 18. I was a starter from day one. I am 54 now, and I can tell you, I am going through memory loss the older I get. Some days, I am sharp, and others, I couldn't tell you what happened, 5 min later. Regret playing football.

You can't turn it off. It's a gift and a curse. I don't fight professionally but I spar every chance I get. Fighting is the one place I can let it all out.

Im a man thats stone cold with very little if not no emotion at all due to something my brother done to me, yet this programme brought a lump to my throat. Its well worth a watch. 👍

I’m happy to say that I met Goodrich last week and he’s doing great, he’s currently promoting mma across Africa. I was at one of the events in Nairobi kenya last week and he’s a great ambassador of the sport. He gave the fighters great advice and really pumped up the crowd.
If a man says he don’t want to fight no more in boxing he should just walk out the ring because most likely he’s feeling some sort of fatigue in his head it’s crazy how they still carried on that fight with Nigel
the real perpetrators in this match was never his opponent, but his own team which kept making him go on fighting when he clearly tried to tell them he didnt want to continue and that he had problems.

A lot of people don't realize that damage can happen while training. It's SO important to get into a good gym with excellent coaches who know the fight game and more importantly weed out the poor sparring partners who are just out for blood.

This is so sad, i would never trade my health for some short lived glory. Its really not worth it. Train bjj and dont stress joints too hard if u need martial arts. Mentality matters so much. From the blows i took in mma (Not nearly as many as pros) I already have episodes of uncontrollable rage and halucinations but i also played football and used to hit people like waterboy lol. Dnt hurt your brain, i wish i saw this sooner... But it was the happiest time of my life :) all good things end. Stay safe fighters

This is the sad side to boxing. I know I hurt a lot of days and wasn't a professional. Can only imagine some of the pain and scars some of these guys I loved watching carry everyday.

Back in the 80s I had a brief career as a kickboxer. I realized that I needed to weigh the pros and cons of fighting. I decided that the risks were not worth the potential rewards! Thankfully, I was able to obtain undergraduate and graduate education. My heart breaks when I speak to guys who were in my circle boxers and kickboxers; guys who are unable to speak normally due to brain damage.
I've met many former fighters as well. There's a reason why medical assocations have been arguing for banning these sports for minors.
If Chris Bird has friends & family that care about him, they should never let him set foot in a ring again.
If he still thinks he has it in him, i don't see why he shouldn't be let back in the ring. Let him hang with the fresh talent for a bit. Maybe they can learn something from him.

Man that first clip with Nigel Benn's Heart braking. Personally if that was me I'd be broken soon as I heard Gregory saying that man ruined my life. It truly unfortunate that it's a part of the spot, glad it's not too common an outcome. I'm guessing Nigel Benn will never forget or forgive himself, even though both athletes knew the risk's. That's enough to push any man to the edge where you'd no longer be able to live with it. Tragic for all the athletes in the video. My heart goes out to the true legends and there,loving and caring pure star's of there family. Great loss to the spots community.
