  • 2005 Saturn Ion clutch replacement. I did not use any special tools to install self adjusting clutch.
    I mentioned the new friction disc (clutch) looked thin. But I found this video and the difference between the new and old in that video looks the same as mine. • Chrysler 2.5 crd clutc...

    This probably doesn't matter but if you align that dot in the center of the flywheel to the dot across on the edge. The first pass to the right the edge of the flywheel is more flat... next is dimple edge. When you put the new flywheel on, if you look at it like this... you now have the dimple on the first pass and flat on the 2nd.
    Another difference was the logo was at about 9oclock bolt from the center dot but the logo was more at 7oclock bolt when you put it back on.
    Probably doesn't make much difference, I'm sure it's balanced regardless but just an observation for those protectionists. I would have just marked it but I went the extra mile and bought a new flywheel.
    Another thing I noticed is LuK used plastic this time instead of metal on the 4 hooks around the center of the pressure plate. On mine and the ones on your video too. Like we need more plastic on this car =P
    PS. At 240,000... My clutch springs were closed about 80-90%, not as shot as yours but my disc brake had snapped metal on the edge and one of those big springs actually came loose, worn down and created some nice dings in the flywheel. The boot on the slave cylinder was torn and bearing sounded just like yours. Old and new stuff is all Luk, wondering if the guy just cheaped out on a clutch and ignored the rest or if it's all original at 240,000. Also replacing master cylinder.
    My car was riding fine, I just felt like the clutch wasn't engaging sometimes anymore, especially if I was driving like an ass, and couldnt get her in to gears at higher rpms. Pedal was to the floor since the day I bought it, but to me that's what it feels like in almost every old ass standard I buy.

    Just a quick tip for locking the flywheel when the box is out, is to use an allen key, put the long side in on of the bell housing bolt holes and rest the short end on the teeth of the ring gear.

    Could use some advice. Does throw out bearing = slave cylinder? I bought the clutch kit from Rock Auto (LUK 04217) and I didn't receive a piece with the neck. I bought new flywheel, master, and this kit. I'd like to make sure I'm replacing as much as I can to have everything as new as possible.

      @Jakelazzzz Před 3 lety

      I know this is a old comment. This is ironic. I had this same thing occur to me. But yes, the throwout bearing is the slave cylinder. I think I bought the same kit for my Redline, and that happened to me as well. Pretty sure they are supposed to include that so I'd hope maybe you complained about it. Good luck!

    I have a 04 Saturn Ion 3. My car has a vertual timed transmission. So does the VLT have a clutch plate.
    But, how do you know that the clutch plate is bad. What are the signs and symptoms.
    On my car, my car will drive fine at low speed . But, soon as I get to about 60 miles a HR. The passenger side of my car shakes and vibrates really bad.
    I put two new front hubs, rotors and pads. I ordered new front Axel. Shocks and struts and sway links. My car has 150 k on it. So, I was wondering if a bad clutch plate could cause this shaking.

    Hi, you say the green self adjusting springs set first time you press the clutch?
    I've just installed same type of clutch as yours, but i watched a video of a guy compressing the clutch plate centre, then he turned the inside of the plate to make the green springs compress, then he released the pressure off the clutch plate prongs, this was off the car.
    I did it that way, fitted the clutch onto the car now my clutch wont disengage?

    I have a 2005 Saturn Ion and I recently had a failure that no one seems to understand. I can put the car in gear and shift through all the gears just fine, but it is a power problem I am having. I can put the car in first gear and it will go but the rpms are a little high, but when I shift to second, the rpms go even higher and I start to loose power to the wheels, and I have nothing in third, fourth or fifth. Do you have any ideas. In my experience, if it was a clutch problem, it just wouldn't work at all....not with some but not others.

    • @BEERSnGEARS
      @BEERSnGEARS  Před 7 lety

      I am pretty sure that's your clutch! The higher the gear the more pressure it requires for the clutch to hold. I am pretty sure your clutch is slipping. Can you safely make a CZcams video of the problem?

    • @xred_fpv2603
      @xred_fpv2603 Před 7 lety

      When accelerating in second or third gear, lightly press your clutch about an inch or so in without letting up off the accelerator. If the car all of the sudden has plenty of power, then its your cruise control brake switch gone bad. Engaging the clutch slightly bypasses that switch and lets the engine do its thing. Otherwise it could be a clutch problem. Easiest way to find out if its slipping is by shifting into 5th gear while going slow and giving it gas. If the rpms rise without the car accelerating then your clutch is slipping.

    • @BEERSnGEARS
      @BEERSnGEARS  Před 7 lety

      To the last part of that comment, yes! If your RPM rises while in a lower gear and going slow that is a guaranteed way to test the clutch.

    I've just installed one of these self adjusting clutches to my car, it's a European car, Renault megane 225.
    After install it won't go into any gears. Those three green springs on your pressure should be preset out of the box from Luk, which mine was.
    But it's strange in the video you say to compress clutch fingers first time you press the clutch, then this then sets the adjustment springs.
    People are telling me you need the large three pronged install tool with self adjusting clutches, but my service manual, my local Renault dealer etc all told me the Luk clutch is preset out the box, fit it to the car, and that's it! But i can't get a gear!
    Twice i've had the gearbox of this thing and it still won't a gear??
    My clutch is hydraulic and the clutch pedal moves down about an inch and a half before there is good pressure.
    I have bled it every way i can think off and pedal never changes. It isn't close to getting into 1st gear, gear lever is solid with clutch down and car creeps forward.
