- This largely forgotten about mirrorless camera is not only super small, lightweight and powerful, but it's also incredibly cheap, costing around $200 on the second hand market. In this video, I explore the Fujifilm X-M1's rocky history and why despite all of its shortcomings it's still such a great camera for street photography, travel and just about any genre of photography.

Agreed. Now looking at prices they're over 1k anywhere
We should buy random cameras on eBay and then all make videos on them and then sell them. Easy money
LOL! Definitely not able to get it for $200 now if ever .. I got excited for a sec lol
$200???? LMAO

Lovely video. Its honestly good to see other cameras showcased for street photography instead of the x100v all the time
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it!
My first fuji about 3 years a go is XA7. Its successor of this camera. I love it, still use it for professional work (construction site documentations) with 15-45. Its brilliant piece of gear.
Isn't X-A7 the successor of X-A1 mentioned early in this video? The one that's cheaper and don't have the X-trans sensors. They look really good.
Finally I found the one other guy on earth who bought the x-a7 :-D i just recently upgraded to a x-s10 for the IBIS and video features....the xa7 is going to be my street-shooter with the 35mm Pergear manual lens :-D
I just recently started using mine again and loving it as a throw-in-the-bag everywhere camera. Paired with the TT-artisans autofocus f2.8 27mm pancake it's ace - heavy vignetting and all - and sort of has a film-ish feel. I took it to a birthday party the other night and coupled with the flash (which I would normally avoid in such circumstances if possible) the pictures had the vibe of an old disposable from 2008 that you've found and developed - but in a good way with far better quality of course!
Really interesting post thanks. I bought one of these a couple of months back as I have the X-S10 but found that rig with the kit lens a bit too heavy when walking around on holiday. The only downside of the M1 is the loud mechanical shutter. I like the thumb grip as I'm finding that I can accidentally move the exposure comp wheel. The XF-18 f2.0 lens works well, is light and and ideal for general street stuff. I was considering selling it but from what I can see I'm lucky to have one at all!
Great video, Tom! Really nice walkthrough. Love the images you captured too! 🙌
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to share some kindness 👏🏻
I am very tempted to pick one up. Thanks for this overview 🙏🏼
I discoverd photography with a Fuji X20 ten years ago and still amazed how good, compact, beautiful and easy to use it is
appreciating your thorough approach to logging the virtues of all these older fuji cams - so niche and cool - major fomo antidote to all the new expensive and hard to get 40mp sensors
Thank you - glad you're enjoying the videos! Cheers for the comment and support 🤜🤛
Thanks for the video. I had the X-Pro1 and X-E1 and many Fuji X bodies up to the X-T4 but now only an X-E3 that body cost $300 USD used. My smallest mirrorless body I own and just the 27mm and 18-55/2.8-4 to keep it small.
Bought one new with the kit lens nine years ago for $400. I have the X-Pro1 and this little camera is a gem. With TTArtisan and 7Artisans lenses the images are stunning and the kit lens is no slouch either. Highly recommended.
This is crazy, this was my first proper camera, you use the lens I currently use on it, and the video is the same aspect ratio as my monitor. Right now I use it high iso B&W only, but I save the raws too. The grain on this camera is special to me, and I love the hybrid analogue digital look I get from it.
Tt artisan hits the stuff with their 25mm f2, plenty sharp it can capture strands of hair
I love this - this video was obviously meant for you! Haha!
I haven't tried B&W with it yet but that sounds like something I'd be in to, so thanks for the suggestion!
Been using one for a decade alongside X Pro 1 & 2: great pocket camera with short wide lenses but also a great tool for use with longer legacy glass and adapters; it's surprisingly capable with manual focus. The Samyang 12mm f2.0 is a beast on this body. Only real dislikes: the lack of full articulation on the screen so screen is always exposed to damage. Best buy after a Thumb rest: a Gorilla screen protector so you don't wreck the screen when it's in your pocket [keys etc].
I got a collapsible Larmor Sun Shade which attaches magnetically to their included screen protector, game changing accessory for me in my sunny climate.
I had the Pany GF-6, loved it, and gave it to my daughter, now have a mint used Oly EM-1 Mk1. GF-6 has amazing features!
Bought one around 6 months ago and I love it. Only thing for me is my eye sight, so autofocus is my best friend which limits my lens choices due to a lack of a view finder. I have the Fuji XC 35 F2 and it’s a great combination.
Just bought this last month and absolutely loving it. Complements my XT-5 and will be using it with vintage lenses as well.
this seems like a nice gift to anyone interested in photography.
If someone bought me an X-M1 as a gift, I would be f***in' stoked! So yes. Great gift idea 👌🏻
Tom, I own one and I usually prefer to use that to the other Fuijs due to the very reasons you say- size, quick to use, minimum distraction . Good review , thanks
I really love my X pro2 but after last trip to Brazil. I was looking for a compact travel camera that I don’t mind beating up some and after watching your video I end up getting XM1!! I love the size, the portability, and the fact that it had the OG X Tran sensor with an interchangeable lense.
Picked mine up for $55 in perfect condition a couple of years ago & actually found the original little Fuji grip extension and leather half case with strap brand new stock for $10 each. Like you I also added a thumb grip and a Larmor protective screen which comes with a collapsible magnetic sun shade making it ideal to see the screen in my sunny environment. Paired with the 18mm f2 and 27mm f2.8 pancakes a great little compact walkaround set-up. Will keep it until it dies given its scarcity.
Nice! I do love how customisable these little cameras are.
where can one get a good deal like this too?
This is culprit that drove me to fuji. Still have it today as my ultra light option, although its not so light with a griped L bracket for tripod use. I have always found it frustrating to use, as you have eluded to, but the IQ makes up for it. I have a number of larger bodies available to me but would only consider not using it if i bought an XS body.
It's certainly not perfect, but there's a lot to love about it for sure!
SOOC images are great from this camera too, pretty Provia film sim. Very compact and I like to use the tilting screen. The lens I use is XF35mm f/1.4, AF is fine for me.
How's the video recording?
@@JustJacoBee terrible, i ve sold just a month ago

That was very kind of you. Hopefully your friend's kid got some use out of it! 😊
I own this camera along with the x-pro 3 and xt-4 and I still grab this camera as my EDC most days. Great everyday camera!
I love how easy it is to chuck in your jacket pocket. Makes it so handy!
@@TomCalton agreed! It’s great that you showcased this camera. Great video and new subscriber here. I look forward to watching the older videos and the new ones you make as well. Thanks!
Thanks for the support! Happy to have you onboard ☺️
I got my XM1 many years ago and it was great buy. Pictures quality was better than other equivalent price camera
My first Fuji camera was an XA1. This was my second digital camera and I quickly discovered that to use the LCD, I needed to put on my reading glasses. So without a viewfinder on the XA1, I had to do glasses on, glasses off every time I wanted to take a photo. didn't have it very long before I upgraded to an XE1.
That's a very good point and one I didn't consider as I don't have to wear glasses (yet!). Thank you for sharing 😊
Not following…this review is on xm-1 and William is talking about other cameras. I wear glasses. What am I supposed to take away from this? Is the xm-1 not good if you wear glasses? If not which model then for glasses?
@@dry509 The XA1, which I had, and the XM1 were identical twins except for two things. The XA1's body was totally plastic, while the XM1 was better built and the XA1 had a traditional Bayer sensor while the XM1 used Fuji's first Xtrans sensor. If you wear glasses all the time and can clearly see the image in an LCD, then the XM1 or any of the XA models will work for you.
@@williamschaffel3760Great. Thanks.
I used to use a X-A1, pretty similar to X-M1 - for wildlife photography. Was amongst the very few people who started using Fuji, or even mirrorless for that matter. Upgraded to a new camera last year :)
bought one of this with the 27 f/2.8 weeks ago and its amazing
Nice! Great combo too!
xm us great camera, swaped the kit zoom from my xt1 for it. Picture quality is same as xt1. Flip screen let's you be Uber sneaky. It is small but not back pocket small, especially with a voightlander 15mm attached.
Only down fall is with use and time the controls get touchy and software gets glitchy. Makes using it a little more challenging. xt1 still running like a champ with no plans on upgrading, but will have to move on from xm sooner rather than later.
I got reminded that I still have my XM1. Thanks, Tom! Imma head out and take photos of unsuspecting people :’
Love your videos! It's surprising to see so few subscribers but I wish you the best for the future. 👍GREAT SUCCESS 👍

It sure is a gem. I figure I got mine for a steal two years ago for $40. Love this little thing 😊
Wow! You really did! Nice one 👍🏻
I still use it with 14mm 2.8/f 1st gen for street photography. It always give me surprises.😊
Nice!
This video made me buy! Thank you! Were you using a recipe while shooting the photos shown in the video?
Cool, I hope you enjoy it!
Most of the shots were raw and then edited in LR but the ones where I used a film recipe I've noted next to the photo the settings I used. Hope this helps!
I still have this camera. Bought it last year from a friend who sold it to me for $175. I got it slightly used with roughly 2000 shutter count. I used it to shoot for prenups and I’m still blown away by its quality. For a 16mp first gen XTrans sensor, it still holds up to today.
Still have it to this day. It's old, but still kicks ass. You need a wee bit more time for image processing with this one, though.
I shelled out for the Fujifilm X70 because Ken Rockwell convinced me I needed the flash lol. Anyway, it's an amazing camera and I think it's even smaller than the X-M1. Fujifilm did a great job making their sensors, film simulations, and letting customers create and share their own film recipes. The megapixel wars have ended and it seems we've reached a bit of a plateau on practical image quality so photographers look for other features to give their photos that unique something. Kind of wish m43 had a similar film recipe like Fujifilm sensors...
Hi there
I'm considering buying this camera and I just wanted to know whats the battery life like if you don't mind
@@hmmmnope2455 I haven't had any issues with battery life using my X70, though it is a smaller Fujifilm battery so a 2nd battery is probably a good idea. I do have to make sure to get a full charge the night before if I am going to be out all day with the X70. The nice thing though is it charges through the camera without having to take the battery out, so it's a little more convenient. Google says you can get 330 shots on a full charge, I dont shoot anywhere close to that much though. Hope that helps!
Came for the camera review, stayed for the nostalgic af shots of my hometown.
This is my first fuji camera, i love it!
i sell it to other newbie after i got my X-T1.
Sure! I love this camera!! I did the best with.... even if now I have a X pro 2, even Leica Q... I think it's a killer one ;) the tilt screen was pure genious
I've had mine for, like, 6 or 7 years now. A very very good camera
I have this one right in front of me as I type and I got a grip with it and now I look at mine and yours and I am seriously thinking of getting rid of the heavy grip
I was contemplating getting a grip extention, but I found that the little hotshoe thumb rest thing was a good enough for me. Plus, it didn't increase the camera's size or weight, which is great because I wanted this setup to be as small as possible.
@@TomCalton well I took it off there. And now it's much lighter. The grip combined with my Minolta MD rokkor 50mm 1.7 and the metal adapter made about as heavy as my original A7 which makes its kinda superfluous to my gear. Now I have to get used to not having the grip lol I am sure it works well. Also if you do it will at least look better since yours is all black. Mine is a classic version and it made it look ugly tbh.
i bought one becoz of you. super happy with it!!!
I bought an X-M1 in great condition for £100 on ebay in 2016. My first foray into Fujifilm Xtrans. looking at prices now, that was a good deal!
I'm going towards my mid-70s and have been ditching my heavy DLSRs and lenses for compacts in my travels. I'm now currently using a Sony RX100 VII. It may not match the resolution of heavy DSLRs but AI photo editing apps take care of all that should be.
What antoher afordable lenses do you recomend for this camera?? I want to buy one for shooting landscapes and portraits. Amazing video!!!
This is a really interesting buy at $200 might have to scoop one up.
If you can find one, definitely grab one!

Bought one of these 6 or 7 yrs ago on eBay . I found a pancake lens and this is the camera I grab most of the time for street photography. Amazingly discreet.
"One month two camera" has an interesting review of the X-E1 which has same sensor and similar internals but bigger, and with EVF. She gives a "recipe" for jpegs for this sensor. Wasnt as happy with later models
Just got one from eBay, with the lens from your link, and the thumb grip as well
Nice! Hope you enjoy it 😊
I didn't find it for anything less than $450, camera body only.
Can you charge direct the body via cable ? Or you have to put out battery and charge in the external charger?
This camera with the 18mmf2 is always in my bag.
Nice combo! What kind of thing do you shoot?
@@TomCalton Its my favorite combo for photo walks.
Cool little camera and great review. I have a Nikon J5 which I love as the 1” sensor makes the lenses much smaller and Sony 20 meg sensor gives great images and is the sensor that the RX100 line is based on. I’m able to use my Nikon apsc lenses on as well which makes it possible to shoot birds. It has a 50 1.8 equivalent lens which is a-great carry around lens and with the 18-35 and the 70-300(equivalent lenses)all fit into my small fanny pack. Great for travel, hicking, or street photos. Regards Gerry
I had one for a few years when it came out. The auto focus was horrible but the sensor when the AF worked, was amazing.
Manual focus is the way forward with this camera, which might not be to everyones liking
Great! Buying an X-A1!
Nice! I hope you enjoy it!
Great vid! Are the photos edited or SOOC jpegs? Thanks!
Thanks! Most of them were edited RAWs, with the exception of the few shown when I was talking about the film recipes and I noted next to them the parameters I used. ☺️
I got it, with only 5 shots, 4 years ago, with XF 27 f2.8 all together for 200 eur. I compared with X-E1 and really images are the same. It also have auto mode, that is quite good and helps a lot. And flip out screen, that X-E1 doesn't have. I sold X-E1 and keep X-M1.
It's a special little camera for sure.
i have both n still keeping them
Where do you guys find those deals. My version of second hand sites does not sell them

The photos in "The goat" section look really nice. Which setting/recipe and exposure did your use? 😄
Great video! Unfortunately, none available in the US except for eBay for considerably more.
Thank you!
Yeah, it's the same here in the UK. They seem to sell quite quickly on MPB so you have to keep checking back and grab one as soon as it comes available!
Nice video- is the back screen touch enabled so you can do tap to touch like on the Ricoh GRIII? Also note these cameras seem to be selling for about $400 now...wonder if your video drove up the price!
Thanks! No touch screen on this one, unfortunately.
Haha - hopefully I'm not responsible for a price hike, but honestly, I found the price does fluctuate quite a bit depending on how many are currently available. I bought mine from MPB.com, though they tend to sell quite quickly so you just have to keep your eye out for one.

I was actually waiting for quite a while for its next version m2 if it ever came out,but think fuji decided to drop the series since nothing came out
That’s so sick. I wanted something similar but with a non-interchange lens:o *for concerts* (spectator not hired of course)

@@TomCalton in usage the same as the 25mm.The images come a little washed out compared to the 25,but i like it and there is no vigneting at all.The focus peaking is more visible but you have to change it in the menu every time you switch lenses for the focal length.Overall very good for my usage.
Thanks for the info! I'm definitely tempted to give it a try.
Such a lovly video
This shows that they can place large sensors in very compact cameras.....which they forgotten about....it seems. The Panasonic LX100 is also one of these really pockettable camera , but with MFT and fixed zoom lens with a viewfinder (not great but usable for framing). They should give a furious back look at these type of cameras otherwise most will end up with an "always better" smartphone and drop cameras all together.
kinda wish i still had the xm1. i have the xpro2 now. but i like colours of the first xtrans sensors
The X-Pro 2 is great. Still my favourite camera to pick up and shoot with.
Had one for a while but couldn’t get on with it because of the lack of viewfinder, so I sold it.
Images and colours from it were superb.
What did you get instead?
This will sound daft, but after selling the X-M1 I bought a Canon 450D and a 40mm f2.8 pancake lens.
Not daft at all! So long as the camera is best suited to your own shooting style and preferences then that's all that matters!
The Canon 450D was actually my first ever camera! I loved that thing ♥️
Agree, it is the same camera that brought me to Fuji. I gave it to my daughter when I ‘moved up’ to the X-T series and am still with Fuji today, but there was just something about this camera that I fell in love with in a way I haven’t connected to any other of my Fuji’s to this day.
If you add an external viewfinder and a wide angle lens, you’ve got a perfect zone-focusing street-snapper!
Have you got any suggestions for a good external viewfinder for anyone who might be interested in this idea?
I'd use either a 35mm or 40mm viewfinder with your lens, cropfactor being 1.5x. Go for Voigtländer, Leica etc..@@TomCalton
I have a canon DSLR with APS-C sensor and a few EF lenses. What compact camera body will work with the lenses?
I run this set up with the TTartisans 27mm and my only gripe is the delayed shutter on the XM. Otherwise, it’s a fun little set up.
Well you've impacted the market. They are running $600 to $900 now. Great camera.
Would you recommend this over sony nex 3n & zv-e10? I'm a beginner and still don't know or understand what their differences
In my country I’ve found it only for 300€, but with a 50-230mm and and a 16-50. Could it be a good price option considering the objectives?
Gear video! IMO, it’s hard to beat the quality when using iPhone as webcam with continuity cam. Although I’m unsure if there is ANY way to use it with PC.
IMO. Last summer, I bought a like new XT-2 which is so much smaller than the Nikon D7100 I had prior and performs better at high ISOs. This X-M1 is appealing though. It appears to be going for $350-400 used right now.
I’ve just bought it for 322 USD with very bad (Pergear 27mm) lens but camera is awesome. Any suggestions for affordable lens? preferably 16-18mm. And is the Ttartiean viewfinder actually good?
Got this to help out my XT 5 and it RIPS ! Little slow and LOUD but I love it for $300
For the price, it's a great little camera 👌
Beautiful little camera. I have it as an "always with me"-camera. Unfortunately the shutter release stopped working just a few days ago. Other than that, my only complaint was the screen that flips out in only one direction, making portrait orientation images practically useless.
How would you say this compares (except for the 'film-feel') to for instance the later Sony NEX-cameras and earlier Alpha-mirrorless bodies?
Hello brother, I would like to know if your lenses are not tight. I ordered the lens and it moves a little bit.
This is so infuriating. This camera was super available, and now people sell it for more that the original price. Its ridiculous.
I've been using this as my main cam for 8 years. lol
Neo where close to £200 😢 couldn’t find it less than £350 great video by the way 👌🏼
Pick this up and paired with my XC35 f/2 A while ago for a smaller travel / street carry and very happy with the results! Only this that frustrated me is I can’t figure out how to move the focus point so just have to position what I want in focus in the middle of the frame. Any suggestions on this?
I dont have an xm1 but i do have an xe1. In the settings there is the function button setting. In it you can choose what the fn AND the down button does. I can set one of the buttons to Focus Area but I don't use AF on it (because street photography and it's af is relatively slow). The video doesn't show it but it's in the xe1. Hi Tom, great video about a hidden gem - a gem that I didn’t even know existed … Very interesting ! Also some lovely images …. (Hv Sub’d. )
I bought an ex demo with 16-50 lens a few years ago for very little money. I used it as a beach camera for holiday photos and it quickly got sand under the dials but over the years I have used it more and more (partly because my X-E1 has developed a fault with the on switch & also as the autofocus is better than that & the X-pro1). Looking back some of my favourite photos have been taken with it & I don’t miss the lack of viewfinder. I’ve now cleaned the sand from under the dials & it has become too valuable to me to risk on a beach.
Just wish the shutter wasn’t so loud 😂 Love mine though, with the 7artisans 25mm 1.8
Hype!

Thank you!
can you add film recipes like other Fujis ?
if I want to mainly take pictures at night in the city would this camera work?
