    It's so odd hearing this Sephiroth performance because it doesn't sound bad but it clashes against what we now understand is Sephiroth's voice direction, that being more reserved and monotone. Can't even blame anyone for the performance, this was the second time Sephiroth had been voiced, but first time in English so one can only imagine they were still trying to figure out how to emote the lines the character said.

    Oh! He was saying "Descend, Heartless Angel". I never heard that audio cleanly, and everyone back in the day thought he was saying "Sin Harvest". But it makes sense; Heartless Angel was the attack Sephiroth could do to lower the party's HP to 1 in FF7.

    Couple of other neat things about these bosses... Sephiroth is the only other boss with TOO MUCH HP to display. So hitting him at the start will simply not move his HP bar till the invisible HP is depleted.
    For Ice Titan, you may remember that we have Aeroga now. The -ga version in particular deflects projectiles automatically... except if you use it against him, he goes completely ballistic and makes the icicles 10 times bigger and completely impossible to deflect!

    Fun Fact: "Hydros" (the Ice Titan here,) is the name of a real mythological creature from Homer! It's usually some form of water snake, and it caused a war between mice and frogs, which Zeus eventually ended by sending crabs against the mice. Sephiroth is one of the only bosses that I know of that has 4 phases. He has 6 HP bars with the 6th being invisible, and around 4.9 or 4.8 he enters phase 2 which permanently changes how he moves and approaches the player along with adding the dreaded Heartless Angel move. Around 3 HP bars he unlocks his first Desperation Move, that being what ever that flurry of slashes is called. And then the fourth phase begins around 1.8 HP bars, now adding the dark orbs, an entirely new normal attack which seems to be some sort of smaller version of the first DM, and on top of that he also unlocks a second DM.

    • @SuperLuigiKart64
      @SuperLuigiKart64 Před 11 měsíci

      For the record, that flurry of slashes is called "Wild Dance" in official sources such as the Japanese guide. The dark orb DM is "Shadow Flare", a recurring Final Fantasy spell that ended up becoming a signature move for Sephiroth after FF7's English translation replaced his Flare spell with it. It's followed him into Crisis Core, the FF7 remake, Dissidia, and Smash Bros.
      The third DM is Kingdom Hearts' interpretation of Super Nova, Sephiroth's ultimate technique that would recur in nearly all of his appearances.

      The game itself is already hard by modern standards, but Elden Ring comes to mind, as does the Demi-Fiend in Shin Megami Tensei V. Both are bosses that show a lack of restraint, Elden Ring via the boss's unique mechanic of lifesteal and a very powerful ultimate move they can use as much as they want. Demi-Fiend in SMTV goes hard not just through his sheer power, but by setting specific rules you must follow in the fight. Breaking said rules results in dying instantly as he spams 100% accurate kill-moves forever.

    It's honestly a shame that "Sin Harvest" hasn't been reused as an actual attack name in Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy, because it sounds really badass. "Heartless Angel" is ok, but very Engrish-y like a lot of final boss spell names in that series. Also it makes you wonder what Sora has done to have sinned so much that harvesting it brings him to the brink of death

    • @ElectricBarrier
      @ElectricBarrier Před 11 měsíci +1

      Heartless Angel sounds normal to me, weird for an attack name but the phrase itself works fine, it's an angel that's a real jerk. Sin Harvest sounds WAY more engrish to me, what does that even mean? How do you harvest a sin???

    • @metalsonic8888
      @metalsonic8888 Před 11 měsíci

      @@ElectricBarrier I mean yeah, Heartless Angel is a perfectly acceptable phrase, but a bad attack name. That's what I meant.
      Sin Harvest doesn't need to be taken literally. Just using some of Sora's attacks as example, Sonic Blade isn't actually a blade made of sound, Ripple Dive isn't a headfirst plummet into disturbed water, and while technically Gravity Break can be used to destroy things, it isn't always the finishing blow that breaks foes when it is used. "Sin Harvest" sounds evocative to me, conjuring up images of sinners being reaped (harvested) by some overwhelming and cold yet divinely motivated force. It could be a big ass scythe swing or it could be draining some dark energy from target via magic. It is profoundly silly sounding when you try to imagine someone in real life saying it, but if you imagine some gnarled old wizard or brooding anime swordsman using an attack named like that then it's not too bad

    • @ElectricBarrier
      @ElectricBarrier Před 11 měsíci

      @@metalsonic8888 Yeah I see what you mean, but that's just it; it's all metaphorical. Heartless Angel is just "well the angel's a dick so he takes all your HP and MP". I think it's equally silly and fitting for some over the top anime character that's some kind of evil divine figure to say.
      What I mean is, Sin Harvest sounds like a name by someone who doesn't fully grasp english and wrote an english attack name, Heartless Angel is just a translation of "Kokoronai Tenshi"(no heart angel) which is why it sounds more natural to me.
      But to conclude I see what you mean, I guess it's a difference of perspective. One I might also share if I ever misheard it, but I never got that far back in the day and only ever heard him say the real name in 2 lol.

    • @metalsonic8888
      @metalsonic8888 Před 11 měsíci

      @@ElectricBarrier As just a minor point, the reason I think Heartless Angel sounds weird is that it isn't a summon. It's clearly a descriptor for some other being and not, like, something Sephiroth has or a way he performs an action. If it was officially called "Heartless Angel's Descent" or "Summon Heartless Angel" or something to that effect it would be fine. But historically it has not been referred to that way and in Kingdom Hearts no angel even appears as part of the attack
