GoPro HERO 8: My Brutally Honest Review!

- This is my review of the GoPro HERO 8 Black! Lots of cool new features, but plenty of cons and negatives - is it still worth buying?! I test the new HyperSmooth 2.0 Boost stabilization, many resolutions and frame-rates, can it "vlog", new TimeWarp 2.0 HyperLapse auto mode, Night Lapse Video mode, and more!
GoPro HERO8 Black: amzn.to/31GXouP
PS. I forgot to drop in my battery test results, long story short a fully charged battery only lasted me an hour or two while shooting, definitely consider buying a couple spares. ;-)

No holds barred in this one!! :D Do you think it's still worth buying despite the negatives? That "non-replaceable" lens protector kinda scares me... 😟
Thanks for another awesome, honest and straightforward review. You are my go to for assistance on purchase decision making. Helping me save my hard earned money for years. Yes, that lens crossed the line and closed the book on the GoPro 8 purchase decision.
So many are just waiting 30 days or so for the new DJI Pocket II and Akaso V50x II
Thanks so much, and I'm glad it helped!
It all depends what you are using it for, if it’s for vlogs get the 8 but if it’s for extreme sports get the 7
@@trippivlogs8465 You are absolutely right. I am going to buy 8 and I don't afraid to use it for my vlogs. Gopro 8 one of the best action cameras on the market now.
This is the review we actually want, user perspective cons focusing. That is how it is supposed to be.
Rather than speaking Spec sheet in review and showing awesome footage.

Thank you, thank you! 🙏
MKBHD does the same. This is the kind of reviewer that we want.
Did you purchase it? I am thinking to purchase it ! Timilai thacha bhane explain !
I've been using the GoPro hero 8 for a good while now, and can say that if you're looking between it and the 7, the image quality and stability is vastly superior, and it remains absolutely worth it for the most rugged activity.
Can you set the 8 black to always be in Video mode when you turn it on? Or do you have to toggle through the modes each time to find Video like I did on my Hero 4 years ago?

@@muzgnasicianie Its not that bad

Allan Cameron right!
@Allan Cameron no headphone jack is a straight up dealbreaker.
@@yungebola5524 not everyone uses a headphone jack. And use Bluetooth. And some people don't even use headphones at all.

What initially sold me on the 8 was the stabilization. I have Parkinson's, so I'm never really sure when my tremor will be significant (time to pop a pill!) or slight. It's still in the box. I'd be using it for vlogging, travel, and some outdoor stuff - hiking, easy kayaking, x-c skiing. But now I'm considering returning it, and getting the 7. The lens cover issue has me uneasy. Thank you for your review, I've seen others that didn't mention the lens cover issue.
Really great review on this camera. Appreciate the details of the finer things like verifying the lens damage etc.
Thanks so much
CHEAH 👌
good one indeed! cheers

Was seriously considering buying one, but stopped watching after learning the lens is not replaceable. And what a crummy response from go pro on the issue. Not for me.
Jeff De Roche get the sony fdr x3000
To be honest, its not a deal breaker for me... I've owned more than 20 GoPros in my life, and I never once Scratched the Screen.. Luck maybe, and I use them for lots of action shoots. I think GoPro made a business call because hey saw that there probably were more issues arising from a detachable lens (water leaks) than if they made it solid. I bet like me, the vast majority of GoPro users don't end up scratching their screens. Perhaps when GoPro designs the Hero 9, they can offer 2 versions: a PRO Version and a Consumer version. The PRO version should have the Detachable Screen... and maybe even a Better SENSOR with good quality 4K?
me to no point in continuing, glad he let us know up front saved me about 10 minutes LOL
Same
No other gopro hero 8 review mentioned the lens not being replaceable. I'm glad i watched this vid.
Lens cover is a deal breaker for me. Ill stick with the 7 FOR SURE
Most probably a deal breaker for all considering it to be used in rough condition. An alternative would be to use a waterproof case.
Just make sure you gave the gopro plus plan..
I agree
No add on is poor design
If enough people did the same thing and notified the company as to why they chose 7 over 8 maybe they would take notice
Didn't he say they make stick-on lens covers?
The few benefits that I see of no replaceable front lens is:
You won't get any condensation in the lens anymore, really handy for in and out of water environments.
It won't get sand or get jammed thus rendering it impossible to take it off anyhow.
Still doesn't justify it imo
5:22 Yep, I'm one of those people who were waiting for this.
This really is the review channel that provides the most answers and the most decent information. Within the first minutes I was already convinced to keep on waiting for the Hero 9.
As always, great Job Ben. Keep up the good work-
Thanks so much, glad it helped you out!

But it's slimmer! So he demonstrates jamming the unprotected lens of a $400 camera into a jean's pocket.
What an excellent review! I was deciding between 7 and 8 and this brutally honest review was perfect, I was getting tired of people only showing 'the good stuff', I needed honest pros and cons, and this was perfect.
Oh and BTW I'm going for the 7. I don't like the non replaceable lens cover, not being fully compatible with older batteries, and I prefer the housing for mounting on accesories instead of those wobbly integrated fingers.
Came back to this vid, just to comment a thank you on how informative this is. Just got one for / with girlfriend (she travels a lot). Really stuck with me how you apologized for just for potentially missing what I might've been looking for. It was everything I needed to know and more, looking forward to any mod reviews, especially the mic.
Liked and subbed.
Glad it helped, thank you so much!
Good thing I watched this video, thank you for your wonderful comparison and now i'm having a second thoughts of buying Hero8.
Glad it helped!
Man, what a honest review.
Yeah, not being able to replace the lense, that fingers and the really bad color science is a dealbreaker for me.
Again, thanks for these great reviews of yours!!!
Glad to help!
I do downhill mountain biking and was going to get the Costco deal for this one, but the lenses cover being non-replaceable is a big deal breaker for me, thanks for the honest review!
Beware...without the side cover on the battery disconnects very easy! I am already looking forward to the next version of this camera and hopefully they can figure things out.
I agree!
What cover?
Did they figure things out yet on this issue?

Go Pro still haven't worked out the bugs in the Hero 7. Sometimes it doesn't turn on, other times it doesn't turn off, using the go pro mic adapter, the voice is sometimes out of sync with the video. Attempts to contact GoPro are met with silence. Buyer beware.
It's kinda sad, ain't it?
Very Informative! thanks for the review!
Thanks!
Genuinely appriciate the honest and objective review, makes a change from all the "top of the page" channels on CZcams search results..... all falling over themselves to get people to blindly upgrade. 4 years later and I'm still running a HERO4 Silver for underwater stuff as the lense hasn't been beaten yet for low light. Subbed
There goes my plan to get one for Christmas. The non-changeable lens, the flimsy battery latch, the flimsy bottom bits. What made this device popular in the first place is how rugged it used to be. The go-to device for recording a lot of outdoor activities that required a tough camera. Whatever sly little executive at GoPro who decided that they’d try to make more sales from broken devices with the new lens and other parts is deluded. Thank Goodness for competition. Goodbye GoPro.
don't filter the comments section, it is not fun.
I''m loving my GoPro 8. Ordered a screen protector like the ones you get for your phone from Ali Express. So far so good... (I went from the hero3, so massive improvement).
Bigfoot Running I got one for Christmas. I used to have a Hero 4 session . So it was definitely an improvement for me too !
Is GoPro 8 waterproof 100% safe?
Non replacing lens (1), an open door (2) showing the battery when using the camera connected to a charger or powerbank, and no frame protection (3), is a huge deal-breaker for me! Going to stick with the cheaper GoPro Hero 7 Black!
Just imagine you being in a mountain and the lens crack! Not being able to replace lens whatsoever means, the mountain filming you were eager to do, is no more!...
I don't know if they changed the Product Owner for the GoPro Hero product or not, but these awkward changes are a shoot in the foot and a huge setback for a supposedly new upgraded model. GoPro Hero 7 Black was (is) such a perfect product!
So basically now we have:
1. GoPro Hero 7 Black
2. Osmo Action Camera
3. GoPro Hero 8 Black?
I love that you made sure to note and show how hard it is to handle with one hand for those that are disabled
I just ordered the Hero 8 and sold my Osmo action!
I hope I don't regret this! Speaking of freezing issues with the hero 7. I noticed osmo action had a built in heat sink to help cool it off and hero 8 don't see it..
This is very true, I wonder if overheating will be a big deal
Decently probably gonna regret your decision depending on your use case and how rough you are with it.
for vloging how you did, it's will be not better step (only audio better if you need), but hero is better from osmo mostly in sport cases. Osmo has bad angle for sport :P
@@xXadambXx yes the FOV on the Osmo was a bit small for my liking

2:14 GoPro: "Lens of the camera is not replaceable and GoPro doesn't offer any repair service as the cost of performing such would be more expensive than replacing the camera outright."
1:34 AuthenTech: "It used to cost $20."
ULTRA KWON i know right
And it doesn't even increase the waterproofing rating...
Another step in the march toward the disposable society.
if you have the extra subscription monthly thing, will they just give you a new camera?
I've only been researching this for like 10 mins now +the 6mins I've gotten into your video, Ben, but here's some thoughts:
1. the Hypersmooth feature is available at 4k60 now with a patch they released (correct me if I'm wrong)
2. the tempered glass would crack under high impact but that + the super-strong glass on this thing would almost certainly be fine for 99% of things. Easier to replace a tempered glass sticker than a lens so in some ways this is a huge upgrade.
Gonna have to pass on the 8, not enough improvements. Needs a bigger sensor so you can actually use it to record inside with decent results
Low light performance is super bad :(
I’m very impressed by the lack of wind noise! We are a sailing/travel channel and wind noise is a constant plague
2:15 into the video and gopro lost a customer was gonna go get mine this weekend not anymore

Keep it up
I was today years old when I found out my go pro hero 4 had a removable lens...
Kinda confirms my developing GoPro thesis: every other major release represents enough improvement to consider spending, but year over year they really don't justify replacing or adding to your quiver. Improvements are just too incremental, and they've even made a few things worse from the looks of it. I may trade up my Hero3 Black for another Hero7 Black, and hold off on until the 9 is out to see if that offers anything revolutionary.
attach a screen protector or a tempered glass on the lens so it won't get scratches
The quality of the camera will drop off lol
Bought the GoPro 8, used once - battery life reduced down to 19%, put back on charge. Never came back on... wouldn't recommend wasting £400 on an action camera that's out of action!!........... thanks for the review though!!
Nice review, I like a good honest not sponsored review.
Thank you Elijah
So the hero 7 is better?

I’ve had the 5 for years never had to replace lens and mostly film mountain biking and under water clips. Upgrading to the hero 8, gadget insurance I have anyway will cover camera at no extra cost and have the screen protectors. Not a game changer for me. But each to their own

Great and may I say objective review. Big fan of the GoPro. I still have and use my 3+ and after your review, will upgrade. From your review I am impressed by the quality of picture that the 8 delivers compared to the 3+, which is really what the lens should do. Indeed, damaging the lens is a risk but you can mitigate against doing so. I only dive with the GoPro and it is always in a housing regardless of whether or not it is in or out of the water. I've never scratched or damaged the lens of either the housing or the lens itself. Thanks a bunch.
Thank you soooo much for this vid, it really made me rethink this purchase
Still rocking a Hero3 Black and it's time to upgrade. The stabilization is a major upgrade. This video helped me pick the 7 Black over the 8 Black, thanks! Not nearly enough benefits to the 8 to justify the drawbacks. Flimsy legs and non replaceable lens? No thanks.
Thanks for your honest review mate! And yes, The "non-replaceable" lens cover is a deal-breaker for me. And I do not want to put a tempered lens and screen protector on either, as it will slightly distort the "True Picture". I'll stay with my GoPro Hero 7 Black and wait for the new GoPro 9 to come out... hopefully with all those terrible "Problems" fixed that are on the GoPro 8!
Cheers, Mark
Cheers!
Ordered mine yesterday. Really looking forward to getting it in the mail!
SUAV Enterprises how is it mate? Looking at getting my first go pro...
I'm still very interested in getting the hero 8 but the lens replacement issue made me hold off on the purchase that I was about to complete. I'd be using the camera for mountain biking at top speeds of 50 mph and would need to use the protective housing anyway but no replaceable lens remains worrisome. Definitely a step backwards in design.
Fok of
I have two hero 7 blacks, love them. I bought two hero 8's and so far I'm not impressed. The lens for hero 8 can be replaced. Ya need a heat gun and a pry tool. Not wanting to do that I bought two Ulanzi G8-5 Vlog Metal Cages for GoPro Hero 8. The cage has a 52mm threaded filter adapter. I put UV filters on each cage adapter, this will protect the camera's lens. It also comes with a shoe mount that can be attached on top. On the bottom, it provides space for a mic adapter. Finally one the the hero 8's keeps crashing and freezing. That behavior stopped when I put a hero 7 battery into that hero 8. Go figure.
This is what I call perfect review. Thank you for the detailed information.
Thanks so much
Thank you for your review. I personally stopped watching it after you said that we can’t replace the lens if it’s damaged. A big no no for me. Very helpful review, you save me $400.
Glad it saved you some money!
It seems to me that either gopro never learn or more likely they just don’t care. The sound quality and that wobbly folding mount are the deal breakers for me. I have been waiting for them to take notice of us motorcycle riders who just want some reasonable sound without a myriad of add on’s I’ll stick with my old 5 black and see if down the track they rectify these problems. Thanks for the heads up mate.
100% agree
Haha, it not wobbly at all....I agree the permanent lense cover is a pain, but considering I only paid 300 for it if I am going that crazy rough with it I'll probably damage something else.
Ulanzi just came out with the Hero8 aftermarket upgrades... battery door replacement with charge cable access, and an aluminum case that fits all 52mm filters. They just shipped mine this morning. Can't wait.
Definitely staying with the 7 if I cannot replace the lens or use nd lenses.
4:40 - pro tip: if you remove the battery it gets really easy to remove the SD card. This probably avoid people removing their SD card with the camera on.
This Is really helpful , thank for the details ❤
Great review. Did the camera drain the battery when it was off? Does it run very hot? How long can you continuously record video in 1080P?
Why dont people just stick a 2nd (removable) lens protector on it. Those sticker things. I really dont get the fuss.
I bought the 7 black on august 2nd without knowing the 8 was going to be released 2/3 monts later. I regret that. The stabilizer improvement is insane and totally worth it for what i would use the go pro for.
Most honest review about the GoPro Hero 8 that I have seen so far! Well done! Unfortunately GoPro releases another unfinished products, with too many bugs and glitches, at a too high price... Every year I start to lose more trust in the GoPro Company... I hope they go bankrupt soon, since for a few years already, I never get what I pay for: a normal product that does what it needs to do.
I was sold until I saw this review, won't be putting one of these on an fpv qaud :S
I was informed a couple of days ago, that I am going to be getting one of these from a friend. I am kind of nervous because I have never worked with a GoPro before. Say for flying somebody else's drone which was equipped with a GoPro, but I didn't do much with the GoPro, and was mainly using the drone. He operated the controls on the GoPro.
