    Totally agree with Drew Tibert, if the 3020 still has original factory paint I would leave as is. Would be worth far more to the collector when you would be willing to part ways with it. Both tractors look in great shape. Thanks for the walk around video, a superb set up for snow removal, the 4020 would be a lot more comfortable with the enclosed cab.

    Wow, you got some nice collections there! *Tips:* My Dad use WD-40 in the Chains on our Snow Blower to keep the snow from forming and keep the snow pilling / clogging up. Each time he goes out to Blow Snow, he would use WD-40 in the Chains. He turn on the Tractor while warming up, he then spray the Chains while it's still dry. It works and it keep the snow from forming on it. Remember, you have to do this every-time you Blow Snow and this would help Ice / Snow forming on the Chains!

      I tried to make it a habit to keep the pre-cleaners as free of debris as possible, simply because once you let them get to the point of where they start to obstruct air-flow then you are really defeating the purpose of their existence. Both tractors and blower look dandy, and fine hitch and front drive planning. I'm curious - 'might learn something: why did you use the mechanical stop collars on the lift cylinder, instead of using the hydraulic stop? More consistent and reliable, for definite up-stop travel maybe?

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Hello Dave--The reason I went with the mechanical stops was because the cylinder had the optional slow speed retract. This allowed the cylinder to retract very very slowly if the lever was held in that position. I could not risk this ever happening, as the blower can not be raised any higher in transport position, due to almost certain drive-line failure of the PTO. I therefore had no choice but to install the stop collars, this way it can only go so high and no higher. Thanks for your interesting comments.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Hello John. The cab on my 4020 is a "Hinson" cab made by Royal Industries, I believe out of Deleware. The "Stolper" cab was an entirely different model, not exactly certain where they originated from. Having said that, I was able to find the necessary upholstery from a firm called R & R Distributors in Manitoba, the floor mat was purchased through my local John Deere dealer, but since I was able to use all the original rubber molding I did not need to search for those items. Any miscellaneous items (windshield wiper, door handle, cab filter) all were available through JD as well.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello George, thanks for your comments. As for the entire push frame assembly, it is constructed of ordinary 2" x 3" tubing, unfortunately I can not tell you what thickness it is as I closed in all the ends with simple plating as I did not ever want to get snow into the tubing itself so as to cause rust to work from the inside outwards. The lift frame that hooks to the bottom of the lift cylinder is 3" x 3'" square tubing, again, no idea as to the actual thickness but I am certain I did not use the heaviest material available, probably just run of the mill steel tubing that I picked up at the local steel supply shop. Hope this is of some help.

    Question. You said the JD 260 was originally a 3 point model. Did you do the conversion yourself?

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Brandon. I had originally drawn up some "rough" designs in order to mount the 3 point blower on to the front of a JD 148 F.E.L. which was on my 3020. I gave them to a local machinist who then proceeded to try and figure out the best method to make it work. He did a lot of the modifications regarding the chain drive as well as the loader mounting brackets and I used it for a number of years in that format. When I eventually sold the F.E.L. I had no choice but to make the necessary changes, so I took the blower and built to my own specification my own A-Frame, P.T.O. driveline, dual cylinder controls, spout rotator, etc. Upon retirement of my 3020 I had to modify it slightly to fit the 4020 but the end result was most satisfactory.

  • @michaelcochran7895

    That is one great job of reconfiguring the PTO. Would you have been able to run the blower with a hydraulic motor?

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 měsíci

      I had given it some thought initially, but after consulting an expert on the subject I discovered that the extra pump, motor and reservoir would have been not only cumbersome BUT very expensive. It was far simpler and easier just to design a system utilizing the front P.T.O. shaft running at 1000 rpm from under the front of the tractor.

(Wish I had kept that one, regret it terribly now) As for the storm, it hit us starting in the afternoon of Sunday March 4th. As for your location that is very interesting, as my grandparents originally homesteaded in the Kamsack/Veregin district in 1908 before moving here to Lipton in 1918. Now that's a snowblower! Is there anyway your could "engineer" a cover for the chain & sprocket to keep it clear of snow and ice? Looks like you could engineer just about anything.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Dear Keith: Yes, I suppose a cover could be built around the chain and sprocket, it would have to be made simple enough so that the "idler/tightener" sprocket would be easily accessible, but I think the toughest problem would be ease of oiling the chain. I do lubricate the chain with JD chain lube, something I feel is very necessary to keep it running smooth with all the moisture in the near vicinity. Right now with the way it is set up I have to be really careless to get much snow in and around the chain and the sprockets. I will admit that it looks good in this video, but it does need a bit of work. The rear hydraulic couplers leak quite badly, a few leaks around the engine that should be taken care of, and a nasty little "dent" in the nose of the hood on the left hand side. It was there when I bought the tractor in 1970, would be nice to get rid of it, but if I do then the hood is going to have to get repainted, not sure what to do in any of these situations. I guess for the time being everything can remain the way it is. (Thanks for watching)

    Great video! I have a 1984 IHC 5488 ( 185 engine hp) in two wheel drive. I've been contemplating putting a Shulte blower on that tractor, but would be more confident in a front wheel assisted tractor. I'm retired from farming, and don't want to spend big money on an upgraded tractor. Your thoughts?

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 2 lety

      Hello, glad you enjoyed watched my You Tube video. In regards to mounting a Shulte blower on your tractor, guess it all depends on the "capacity" of that unit. Your tractor certainly has enough power under the hood, as long as the blower can handle that horsepower then you shouldn't have a problem. Where you might run into any difficulty is if the blower is quite "heavy" then you could end up with not enough traction on the back wheels, hence the need for FWA. That would be the only downside with going with what you presently own. In my situation, the blower weighs only 750 lbs, give or take, the gearbox is designed for only 65 h.p. max, therefore I run the tractor at only 2/3 throttle at most. It is a setup that might not be proper for large scale operations, but like you, I too am retired, I did not want to spend an excessive amount of cash, preferred to use what I already had, made no sense investing in unnecessary equipment. Hope you do find a satisfactory "compromise" that will take care of any excess snowflakes!!

      @@DeereDon / thank you for the prompt reply! 750 pounds is pretty manageable, but in my case, I would have to talk to a dealer, and see what the math tells us. My tractor with fluid in the rear tires seems adequate. I am using it for my yard and neighbors only. I am in western Manitoba, so we are practically neighbors.

    My 72 doesn't have an air intake like that. Did you add that? My '65 had one.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 2 lety

      No, I did not add the air intake on this tractor, that is how it came from the factory. I feel it is safe to say that any and all JD tractors sold in this province at that point in time came with the "external" air cleaner intake. As can be seen in this video, my 1966 3020 had a similar set-up as well, only smaller in size. It too arrived from the factory with that addition already installed. I believe it had a lot to do with the fact that tractors used in this province were subjected to extremely dusty conditions, not to mention the use of pull-type combines which created even more dust and chaff which caused problems regarding inadequate air intake through the side screens if the tractor was only equipped with "below the hood" air intake.

    are you shear its a 72 it looks like 68 with the air cleaner out the hood. it looks good

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Hello Ron.. The air cleaner stack above the hood was an option for all 4020 tractors, right from 1964 until 1972, but here in Western Canada it was certainly not considered an option, but a necessity. Having said that, please note that my tractor has the oval muffler, something that makes this tractor 1969 (or newer). Another item to note, namely the cab on my tractor, is a Hinson cab, (built by Royal Industries) was only found on 1971 and 1972 tractors, and finally the serial number----267665---places my tractor at the very end of the 4020 production run. I did own previously another 1972 4020, serial number 268165 and I was informed by John Deere officials at the Waterloo factory that my previous tractor was produced in the last 1% of 4020's built.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Dear Sir: No, unfortunately, the cab did not come with a heater, but I suppose it would not take much effort to install a heater within the cab. Having said that, I decided to leave a heater out, simply because my neighbor down the road has a cab tractor with snowblower, and yes, he sits in there with just a light jacket, warm air blowing on him constantly. I also notice his windshield wiper is running full time, (any snow that swirls, blows or lands on the windows turns to water immediately) and when he parks his tractor it has to go into a heated shop (something I do not have), otherwise the side/rear windows would be nothing but ice to look through the next time he uses it. I have used this unit for several years now and not one time have I had a problem with water or ice on the windows, simply for the fact that they remain "cold" all the time.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      I can not really give a proper answer, probably would be best to talk to somebody that actually sells snowblowers. I would simply say that most "modern" snowblowers fit only the current tractors that are available today, but that certainly does not say you can not do a bit of "blacksmithing" and mount the model you prefer on your 4020. It would be worth the efforts as the 4020 is still an ideal unit, especially with its mid P.T.O.

      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      I do apologize for this unnecessary sound, it was caused when I inadvertently switched the button on my video camera from "manual" to "auto-focus" just before the video began and the camera was continually shifting back and forth trying to focus. I shall be more attentive in the future.

    thats it on your 3020 and its going to "retire?" the one here is over 13000 and still going and it will continue to go

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      My 3020 was my main tractor when I started farming in 1970. As my farm got bigger so did my tractors, eventually the 3020 became a chore tractor, eventually the "snowblower tractor". After many years I decided to acquire the 4020, basically because I got tired of sitting out in the open. As my video states, I am now retired from farming, have basically just my farmyard to look after, the 4020 does the snowblowing and therefore the 3020 is literally out of a job, hence the reason for its "retirement" also.

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety

      Dear Sir: If you are referring to the "clicking" sound in the background, then I can sympathize with your feelings. The "focus" adjustment on the camera lens was inadvertently turned from manual to auto, therefore the camera lens was continually clicking back and forth, something that I did not want to happen as I had positioned the camera operator far enough away from where I was working so as not to have to adjust the focus. I did not know this had happened until viewing the video afterwards, by which time it was too late to do anything about. I do apologize for this oversight on my part.

    I say you're nuts to restore/repaint any tractor that looks like that 3020, but it's yours, free country do what you like. I wish it would become popular to actually restore tractors and not repaint them. Most people repaint and call restored. After a few auctions you start to get the feeling the only tool most guys own are rattle cans

    • @DeereDon
      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you for your interesting comments. I guess I should have been more specific when I said that I wished to restore my 3020. To me a restoration is not just a paint job. In the case of my 3020 it would be having the rear hydraulic couplers at the rear of the tractor completely redone so they stop leaking oil all over my quonset floor, the seal on the steering wheel column done as well so it doesn't leak oil down on to the platform, holes closed up where the previous owner drilled into the fenders for whatever reason, dents taken out of the side radiator screens that the previous owner put there for whatever reason, the large dent removed from the front of the nose of the hood for again, the same reason, etc. Then I would get the tractor repainted (professionally) at the very end of all these jobs. I would never under any circumstances use a spray bomb to do this job. Never.

      Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you didn't take my comment with the harshness that I now see it has in it that is in no way directed at you in particular. I just meant a lot of people do that. I guess you might take it as a compliment that your 3020 looks so good people become passionate about it's restoration. My original comment should have begun with great snowblower setup and great looking 3020 too. Hope the repairs and everything goes smoothly. I look forward to more great videos Thank you

      @DeereDon  Před 5 lety +1

      @@jtoddjb No offense taken. I have had a few people mention that the 3020 should be left the way it is, only problem is I really don't like a mess sitting on the floor wherever I park it. Having said that, I guess I should take a video of my 4455 power shift which I bought new in 1990, has about 7300 hours on it, paint (still original) looks as good as the day it left the Waterloo factory. If we keep getting snow in this district I will probably have to use it (with the front end loader) to push some of it away. Thanks again for your most interesting comments.
