Nice one Glenn. I just grabbed myself one last week as I've wanted one for a while. Apparently, all it needs is upgraded springs and tyres and it's great. I really like the look as well and it has a bit of a monster truck look about it even if its a crawler. It has a really different chassis for sure and out of the box, you can fit a rear servo like a Clod. Unfortunately, I have a load of other builds before this one so I will look forward to your build. That reminds me, I need to order the bearings and tyres for mine. Time to go blow some more money lol. Grab a HobbyWing crawler ESC, it's low cost and perfect for these.

Yup, I’m a secret fan boy of these CR01’s ranging from box stock to custom chassis CR01’s. Even comped one to see how far you could go (extremely modded) I’m sure they’ll be plenty of tips already mentioned but here’s from my experience: Out the box there fine for trails and light tree root climbing with Tamiya’s own CR motor is a great combo. If your aiming for a lightly modded/performance, softer tyres, twin steering and Tamiya’s own barrel springs/torque bar set and your 55t motor will get you going. Going further, look out for the Tamiya beadlock rings with some weights in the wheels. Add the carbon top tray set to shave some of the weight on the top as there pron to tipping. The carbon drive shafts help with getting some of the weight lowered down and if your going for a torquie motor you’ll less likely get hit in the face when plastic driveshafts ping at you (personal experience) keep a eye on what shock oil you go for, it’s the difference between climbing with a jelly mould and having no rebound, personally I like medium to firm to slow the shock action down. The torsion bars are a interesting touch. Pick what works best for where your planning. If your trying to go all out then start looking at yeah racing parts and such first would be the HD planetary gears. Anything after that is mainly bling but some of the stuff can help to get more weight towards the axles. These are really fun to build the first time around and seeing the cantilevered action is nice to watch. The kit does include everything for 4wheel steer bar the servo and I’d say this is a great hop up as the turning circle is measured in meters and not mm in stock form. Happy building Glenn!

Beware, customizing, and upgrading crawlers can be addictive. The nice thing about a crawler, set up with the right motor/ battery combo, is that they run forever, I walk mine in the woods, and don't come back for more than an hour on one battery. I use a brushless 18.5, and a 2s 5000mah lipo, and I could not want for anything more. You could also do other fun experiments like I did, and bolt a large piece of lead under the front axle to help keep the nose down while climbing, really made a difference on my rig. On a crawler weight can be a good thing. It is possible, the older you get, the more you will enjoy crawling🤔. Do try to find some rocks to crawl over, it is much more fun than flat ground running.

Great looking truck. My sons and I are into crawling but have new age rigs,(axiel and vatera). Great trucks. We find that 35-55 turn motors are good. You need that low end torque for sure but sometimes the only way to conquer an obstacle is wheel speed.

Yeah, I did not get the appeal of Rock Crawlers and Trail Trucks either until I got out and tried it. I am not into any of the competitive stuff, but I found its a lot of fun to take them out and drive them while you you out for a walk especially in the winter months here in Scotland as it turns the rain and mud into a feature to be enjoyed (more mud more rc driving fun), and as you are walking rather than standing around it means that as you can get out and enjoy a RC car when its to cold to stand around for long.
I have also found tire choice is not quite a simple as softer is always better, it all depends on the surface you are going to drive over, the firmer tires actually seem to work quite well for me on mud and gravel. But if you want to drive up and over rocks then you want soft compound sticky tires for the best possible grip and performance.
I dont have a CR-01, but I have been eyeing one up for a about a year now as its just so different from the cc-01, cc-02 and Tamiya Bruiser clone (HG P407) with about 35%-40% and climbing genuine Tamiya parts as I gradually swap parts out for genuine Tamiya hop up parts and spares.
The Tamiya stuff may not offer the raw performance of some of the high end crawlers from other manufactures, but if you are looking for good scale looks and cars/trucks that are fun to build and take out and drive off road the Tamiya stuff is every bit as much fun and my crappy driving skills are probably more of a limiting factor than what I am driving anyway :-)
As for motor selection it all comes down to where and how you end up using it, generally you want something that drives easily at about you walking pace, but with some power in reserve to drive at about running speed to get you over anything that needs a bit more power and momentum to get up or over. As such I would try the 55T motor you have and if it feels to slow in actual use you can always get a higher or lower turn motor later it you find you want to make it slower or faster for the type of driving you actually end up doing.
Finally if you are actually going to use it for crawling or trail use you probably want to swap out the Tamiya ESC for a hobbywing 1080 esc as they dont cost to much and give much better slow speed granular control than the Tamiya speed controllers and allow you to set up drag breaking so the motor holds the car in place when you stop or drive slowly up and down steep hills.

The Rocksocker kit is really nice, and quite capable when out crawling. I've built mine boxart and added the rear steering parts, but since I didn't have a 3-channel transmitter with a mixing function to control that rear servo as per the manual, I just mounted the linkages upside down, used a servo Y-cable and it works great! Besides that and a full bearing kit mine has the 35T CR-tuned motor mentioned on the box, which is really smooth when climbing. I think the 55T motor will get the truck up nearly anything, but it will do so very slowly. You can lock the diffs with a screwpin without any hop-ups, I run mine with a locked rear and an open front. Only downside are the tires, they perform well when climbing rocks and treestumps, but don't have a lot of grip on loose surfaces like sand. Can't wait to see yours built Glenn!

The performance for the price is unmatched and running 2s would be great but 3s is better. Whether you do some trailing or crawling you'll have a blast especially after realizing what these lil machines can do, I guarantee you'll be looking for harder and harder lines while trying to keep the rubber side down! I run my unimog version with a 55t in it. If you're going to fit rear-steer you'll need the additional servo mount parts (about £15 - i think) and then I wouldn't go any faster than 55t, as it turns really tight and likes to tip!! Rear-steer also works well if you set it up as independent front and rear - helps when climbing over bigger obstacles.
35t might work better if you set it up more as a stadium truck with front steering only? But it's a great chassis to build and really easy too swap the motor out or add the extra servo.
If your not sure what way to go, start stock and see how well it does what you want to use it for, then swap stuff from there...

It was easy to set-up and you can do lots of fun interesting stuff with it. You can make the wheels turn in the same direction, opposite direction or front to rear steering only. It very fun to mess with. You will find it very different and fun. Also this is not a completion truck. It is just neat to mess around with. Been wanting one of these for ages. Last time I almost pulled the trigger but went for a gmade instead. The issue is that rock crawlers have evolved since this was the bees knees and you get a much more capable truck for the same (or far less) money.
However, this is an overengineered tamiya beauty and for the build experience I think this would trounce everything else out there.
I'm on the fence again but I think I'm gonna end up going traxxas kit because I want the lockable diffs, two speed gearbox and portal axles. Although that's into £400 plus territory.

@@TAMIYALegends I'm sure it's not a bad truck. Also I recon once you get to try crawling your gonna love it. I got into it during lockdown and you can enjoy it in just a small amount of space, hell even driving over boxes and cussions in your living room.
I even got one of the wpl kits for £28 and it was a great build even though its a small scale.
It's one of the best categories of rc to get into if your into your scale and realism which I have seen you touch on in some of your street car builds.
Maybe one for RC legends if your gonna dabble in other brands but the Land rover on the cc02 chassis would also be a great build e en though more a trail truck than a crawler.

I would just go with the 55T motor you have and add a 3s to give you that wheel speed when it is needed, I used 4s in my Clod Crawler and when I needed it it was awsome to have..
I have found that the axels on these are tight when built and from what i have read on line they are just like that but losen up after a few batteries..
I also bought a cable that connets two servos to one receiver to get the 4ws steering but the rear servo is in reverse, I think it was maybe $10.. You are right i think this is pro the best looking CR01 and box art does look cool

The Rock Socker looks much more well proportioned and with that five slots motor, it will run smoothly with plenty of torque. On the other side, my toyota looks kinda... Goofy, and uses athe stock motor. Maybe I'll swap bodies and throw-in a decent motor, seems that everithing is exactly the same. Great video, as usual, sir. Please, kee it up!

That's a weird design rock crawler and looks neat, Don't know why they don't make more styles of these... Rock crawling is fun if you have the spot for it to run in. Crawlers are slow only a few MPH so the 55T should be good. 4ws is not used hardly at all in crawlers I would just leave it front steer only.

awesome kit for trail/crawling nothing like a trx4 or anything but would be the best tamiya has straight out the box i put a Tamiya CR-35 Tuned/Turn in mine and gave it a few metal option like skid plate otherwise its a great kit very slow but lots of torque and bad on steering circle and only used tble02 esc and 2S with the subaru brat polly body as that was a spare in that kit and kept this for another project later perhaps stadium or thunder looking blitzer all in all a fun and different kit but i do use it lots as fully locked diffs goes anywhere and over everything within reason , will be nice to see what you do with it though sure will be cool im sure . cheers Glenn :-))

I run two of these and dont have any problems with them. props are a bit weak but work fine. Tyres are good, there are better ones out there but not necessary. I have ran a few motors but the torque tuned motor and tble 2 is a reliable combination that just works. I found a 35t was just to slow all the time, sometimes speed is needed.

I love Tamiya CR-01, I still remember I was so excited when I got my first CR-01 over decade ago.
Btw, tips from my experience, although there's ball bearing set come with the kit, but it's better to replace with nylon or rubber covered bearings in the wheel hub.
and if you leave the diff unlocked, the diff will worn out pretty soon.
one last thing, the plastic oil damper leaks A LOT!!!
anyway, CR-01 is really a good crawler that designed decade ago, have fun!!!👏👏👏

I enjoy driving mine, it's not as good as a modern dedicated crawler but it works well enough, gives a bit of a challenge and it's definitely a good trail truck. The kit has quite a few bearing so if you have a completeset youl have a few left over. I'll put some pictures on the group of mine, it's got a couple of hop ups but they are getting hard to find and some free mods. I do think that motor will be too slow, a 55t 3 slot motor is like a 1000kv, I run a 12t 5 slot which is equivalent to about 3000kv and I can run it on 3s.
The rear steer stuff is all in the kit which is great you just need a servo, I found it's pretty much essential otherwise the steering radius is big.

Great looking kit, I love the look of the Rock Socker, shame about the awful name ;) The 55 t motor will give you bags of torque but less speed, but the 35t seems to be somewhat of a sweet spot for a lot of crawlers, I've got a 35t in my FTX Kanyon and it;s superb. And speed , in a crawler? Waste of time tp be honest, not what they're designed for. Awesome video as always mate!!

Depends what you want to do, for low speed control go with the 55 or 35. 55 can get boring if you are doing anything but slow crawling. The 35 is a bit faster but still slow enough not to flip all the time in a hard turn. Any more than a 35 and you have to be very careful in the turns. I just put some FPV on my SCX10 and was testing the range today, it's got a 55t, I am actually worried if some brat went after it I can't out run him. I thought of more speed but high speed handling gets tricky. Probably going to go with a different car. Good luck and have fun with it.

It’s a funny awkward chassis to me I know this kit has a following and the original comp crawler scene has it’s roots using Tamiya parts and axles mostly either clodbuster one’s for MOA builds and TLT1/TXT1 for the TVP chassis builds back in the day. But I’m about to ruffle some feathers, but JMO the CR01 is horrible as a crawler and more a monster truck it’s chassis setup is to top heavy and awkward as a modern crawler and unlike liked the old CC01 chassis it doesn’t have those scale looks which actually had it’s place and is basically the reason the majority of people are into crawling the others are just a new interpretation of the old comp crawling scene where performance over scale looks is more important with the belly dragger chassis. Ok rant over obvious I don’t like it for personal reasons and I totally get why you want it in your collection I just don’t want you to think this is a good example of what we actually run either as scale, Comp or just trail trucks (yes there are 3 basic categories of crawler’s) so, now for helpful stuff.
Holmes Hobbies are the big name goto for crawler motors the key thing you are looking for isn’t necessarily slow speed (I’ve got a crawler with a brushless 3500KV motor and uses 3-4s Lipo power it does slow and fast) It’s smooth startup and slow speed control that you want but you still need to be able to have good wheel speed too, so things like 5 slot 12T motors are the norm nowadays vs the old standard 3 slot 35-55T one’s and small 3s 1800mah or shorty 4500mah Lipo batteries for power. As far as brushed ESC’s HobbyWing 1080 is the usual goto or if you are doing a brushless system Castle Mamba X has been the goto for years. If you really wanna try something different check out the HobbyWing AXE brushless system (not for me but plenty of others love using it) if you really wanna fall down the rabbit hole Holmes Hobbies sells brushless Outrunner motors and a micro esc they are super high torque and smooth with very light weight at the very least I recommend watching some CZcams vids of crawlers using them and the HW AXE system.
Yes it’s a different thing than normal RC depending on what aspect you get into it’s a mental chess game trying to run gates and lines with comp type crawling it can be just about those scale looks and 📸 or just taking a hike through the forest with a trail truck. If that’s still to slow there’s always the U4 stuff that’s basically cross training by running/climbing obstacles while driving RC trucks for time😂. 🍺😎👍🏽
