    John Oates puts the soul in “blue eyed soul”. So underrated as a musician and performer. His solo albums are amazing!

      Amen to that. Saw him with his band Whole Oates at our high school gym. It was his high school, North Penn in Lansdale, PA.

      I have to say that I found the the 70s output more satisfying than the 80s because the vocals in their songs were shared a bit more with John Oates. It added more variety and colors to their overall sound.

      Philly is close to Motown. It was around the same time period. It's the harmony that gives it away. That and they are both from the Philly area.

      @@cindysue5474 Philly soul. I lived in the area, right near the abandoned luncheonette. Philly soul is early seventies with the OJays, Delphonics, Chi Lites etc. different from Motown.

    This album was out 46 years ago. I know because yesterday was our 46th wedding anniversary. The first few months of marriage we listened to this album a lot. We even named our first daughter Sarah after Sarah Smiles.

    The first time I saw this video I just fell in love with John Oates. He didn't get as much recognition as his partner (who led the vocals in most of their songs) so this was a revelation to me on how much depth he had in his voice.

    This is why live versions matter.
    They did a totally different arrangement than the recorded version and it lives and breathes on its own.

    There was so much great music going on in the 70s that I didn’t appreciate Hall & Oates until later. Then when I “discovered” them, I couldn’t get enough. They are so great. Love Darryl’s House too and wish it would come back. Thanks Jamel for the great reaction.

    Man, your last 2 reaction vids take me back to my high school days. The Old Grey Whistle Test was England's version of The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert here in the States and many of the great artist at the time performed on it. 🙏👏

    I remember hearing this on my local rock station WMMR(still around still rockin) outta Philly when it first came out. Hadn't heard of them but I quickly took my grass cutting money and bought the album. This song made me a H & O fan for life.

    Saw H&O live at Mountain Aire, 1981 in Angels Camp, California. Opened with Billy Squier, then H&O and closed by Journey. Of course, being a Northern California venue folks went nuts for Journey, but I actually thought H&O were on fire. Good reaction that triggers great memories. Thanks!

    This was the first song I ever remember hearing by Hall and Oates. I had heard the song on the radio lots and lots. I was totally surprised when I saw them on TV and found out they were white.

    I saw these guys live on this U.K. tour, at Newcastle City Hall. One of the greatest gigs I've ever seen, superb live sound, out-of-this-world harmonies, and what came across strongest of all - they were having as much fun performing as the audience were watching.
