      When I first played Valheim I got a feeling I had not had in years. I knew nothing about the game. No one had even talked about Valheim yet. I stumbled Upon it on day one of the release. I was looking for new survival games. One of the best games I have played in years.

  • @smittysurvival

    Very nice ninebyte! I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. Updates may be slow, but I think it's amazing to see the high influx of interest back into the game every time an update drops. It may be fleeting, but it shows that people still care and come back to the game, even after months/years - not every game can do this, and I think it's a testament to how special Valheim is.
    Maybe I'm just an optimist out of bias since I too create Valheim content, but I think Valheim is positioned to continue to grow into the future. Development might be slow, but there's genuine care and consideration with every step that the team makes, which hopefully means a great final product when it's all said and done.

    • @9byte

      This 'ADHD'-mindset is kinda new, I feel it to nowdays, just 15-20 years ago valheims progress would seem totally normal and people took their time a bit more with games.
      Now everything feels like a semi-speedrun. But I also like what valheim is doing.
      Patience is rewarded in valheim

  • @Dracrek

    1000+ hours in Valheim and I go months without playing at a time. A lot of times it's not even a new update that brings me back, I just love the game. I like doing solo playthroughs and with friends, I think it's the only game outside of A Link to the Past that I've beaten (at least what's there) 10+ times.

  • @theharbringer3900
    @theharbringer3900 Před 9 měsíci +16

    So here is the thing I totally agree with them not wanting to become a huge company and I like that there is a season to their updates. Having content constantly coming out for a game or some thing new every day cheapens the feeling of when a really awesome update will drop. Giving a mini update with a few bug fixes and a little bit of content like Hildrs quest and stuff like that is nice to have and will breathe new life back into the game. Now with the taylor your world playstyle I think that a lot of people are going to continue to play. There are people who do the same with other games as well. Valheim is one if the main reasons I continue my support of indie games. My gaming budget is small So I have to make smart choices. Usually those choices wind up being indie games because I get the most out of them.

    I jumped late on the Valheim train starting in March of this year. But its easily been my favorite game I’ve ever played.
    Already put 800 hours in and plenty more to come. I love getting lost in the world and discovering something new every play through.
    Iron Gate can take there time on this game, because after all its about the journey, not the destination.

  • @a_pirate1434

    Too often games are subject to negative pressure bc of time constraints, and end up putting out a sloppy or unoriginal product. I’m glad that Irongate is taking its time and making something quality and unique, avoiding a lot of the games industry pitfalls. I honestly don’t care how long it takes for them to release Valheim in full, it’s already such a beautiful and immersive game as it is. I even love grinding for resources in Valheim, a game has to be really good to make *that* enjoyable.

      @ChuckHaney Před 8 měsíci +2

      imo, the game is out already. Everyone is playing it. Just because they say it's in beta, really means nothing. It's really just a way for them to fix things that people don't like and have the cover of "it's in beta." I think the game is perfect the way it is. I'd prefer it if they walked away from it right now and never changed a thing. Changes to games are usually to appease the EXACT same people that shouldn't be playing the game in the first place. The "quality of life" players who just want everything handed to them or, more often than not, want to say things like "more bag space, faster this, less expensive that" so they can pretend that they are smart. It's all so dumb. Game devs end up ruining their games trying to appease all the wrong people. Change NOTHING Iron Gate, and listen to no one.

    • @a_pirate1434
      @a_pirate1434 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@ChuckHaney Agreed, though I do think it’d be cool to have some minor, late-game things like Lox-drawn plows or carts, that would make your ability to gather resources advance with the game more instead of plateauing with iron tools, but still require plenty of grinding. And I can’t wait to see the Ashlands and the Deep North fleshed out.
      I’m on day ~900 of my single-player Valheim world and I’m still working on my main base. There’s something very rewarding about needing to do all the work yourself to build and craft anything quality, and just relaxing and taking your time with it (unlike some games where if you know how to make the right machine you can passively get infinite of almost anything you need, no effort.)
      And I strongly agree that Valheim should keep its unique style and not make changes just to appeal to the widest audience. If someone wants tons of easy action they should play a FPS or something. And if it’s less popular than some triple-A game, so what? Let the devs be artists with their game and it’ll be the best for its fanbase.

    I've been running a public server for over a year now, and I never have an issue finding new players for each new playthrough. I think you missed the release to console, which added a ton of new players. Of course, that brought with it many issues. I feel like this year was more geared to getting the game up and running smoothly on console, so a lot of the updates and fixes from Mistlands through to Hildir's seemed to focus on those issues. I feel like the devs have been working pretty tirelessly fixing issues. Some people will say that these issues should have been resolved before they even went to early release, but I understand the need to secure funding on a project like this as well as testing the market. And, while Hildir's release didn't add a ton of new content, the changes that they did implement were much needed. The auto-snapping feature alone is life changing. I'm glad you addressed this, and I absolutely love all of your builds. Looking forward to your next creation, and I can't wait to see what the Ashlands bring!

    Minecraft received updates slowly when it first came out. And it gave me time to stop playing and come back after a long time and start back fresh without being overwhelmed by not feeling up to date with changes. I'm enjoying playing Valheim after a year and half of being gone and I'm enjoying it! Another big part, keeping the team small means less risk. They can look at their funds from sales, plan out years of developments without stress or crunch and a clear vision.
    I'm all for a steady but slow flow of content without "big gaming company x" pushing monetization. So much of gaming seems to be trying to milk as much time and money from players. It's nice to have a respite in Valheim.

      valheim is an exact mirror of minecraft, great initial idea, ruined by success, creator stopped caring and putting in effort, famously took many extended vacations. you know the combat in minecraft was supposed to be a placeholder? the thing that they updated precisely once, years later, to make you... wait a few second in between swings? I wonder what other unfinished mechanics persist in minecraft to this day. we'll never know because notch made a billion dollars from it.

    I'm a few months late - perhaps you'll see this or the devs will see this.
    This game is absolutely incredible. There is some gripes, as there is with any game, but overall this game has been arguably the best game I've played in years, I hold it up alongside Skyrim and a few other classics and it competes handily. I think aside from competitive FPS games, this is one of 3 games that has eaten more of my time than I want to admit, the other two being WoW and Skyrim.
    I have close to 1000 hours and still counting. I've done a dedicated server where friends and I play, I've done duo worlds where I play with just one friend and I've done three completely different solo worlds, my original playthrough (up to Mistlands), a second playthrough to complete mistlands content, and a modded playthrough where I had an intense focus on building. I'm already planning a new solo playthrough for Ashlands when that comes out and Deep North when that comes out (If that's the plan)
    The dev's mentality is absolutely incredible towards how they want to develop this game. They add content when it fits the game well, and they're mostly happy with it. They don't release the content until it's actually ready and mostly solved with bugs. They respond to community feedback quickly - remember ballista's on release? They were awful, and would target the player and not just mobs. The option to not target the player happened in like three weeks!

    The first big hype cycle happens with most decent indie titles. It gets a little bit of big name coverage, everybody jumps on. . . most don't stick with it. Having played buggy messes before. . .I'm just grateful we get regular patch updates to address the bugs. Does it little longer than maybe it should? I'm not a game dev, I can't say for sure. Personally. . .I have already gotten my money's worth. . .and I've only gotten up to just beating Bomemass. I love the world, I love the building, and the fact its a game you can jump into and not need to worry about a story's progression or anything. It's a second Stardew Valley for me with less stress, since I always forget what I was working for in Stardew when I leave the game for a few months. . .with Valheim. . .I know what boss I was looking to next, one glance around 'home' tells me what I need to be doing. . .and I can take whatever sort of break I want and just build if I want.

    Valheim has advantage in not being inherently multiplayer game. So they don’t have to keep number of players at certain level to keep servers populated.
    They just need healthy number of sales each month so they can keep working on it and that number is definitely lower than what they started with during initial Valheim boom, especially when the dev team is smaller, so they don’t have monthly operating expenses that high.

    I love Valheim. My wife and I are playing alll the time right now even my kids play some on xbox and we cross play.
    Im on my second castle and full playthrough.
    Sadly my first world was started during launch and has little mistlands terrain.
    The magic system is fun and I cant for Ashlands!
    Ive considered using a villager/npc mod to make the game feel more alive or quest driven. Havent decided yet.
    The music, the views, even the wonky combat and powers entertain me. The building is awesome i just with iron ore went farther for supports.

    It always makes me roll my eyes when i see complaints about this game from people with hundreds of hours played. Imagine spending ~$20 and thinking after even 100+ hours you didn't get your money's worth...the mind boggles.
    Valheim could die in early access and it would still be one of my favourite games of all time, and I'm confident that won't happen. I don't mind the slow burn at all, every few months my friends and I get hyped up, dust off the dedicated server, and jump in a for at least a couple dozen more hours of new content. And when 1.0 is finally released we know we're gonna start a new world from the ground up to get the full proper experience again.
    In the meantime there's a plethora of great mods to keep coming back to whenever we get the itch to viking it up.
    Fantastic game by a fantastic, dedicated small team of devs. It's been great to see how it's influenced other games as well like the upcoming, awesome looking Enshrouded.

    I think they had a rough first year due to their very aggressive timeline they first laid out and not hitting those expectations, even though the content they eventually released was better than originally stated, it was very much delayed. As they slowly increase their team size and have a smoother content release timeline I think the average player count will maintain better between patches. I do hope they add some way to add new content to old worlds as I have lost servers with 1k hours and epic builds. Not really lost, but inactive now. Overall, they are building this game up the right way. not rushing content because of social pressures, constantly optimizing for better performance, and their dev blogs are on point. I havent tried playing on a streamer server or mega server but if anyone has room I would like to contribute.

    You should think of the updates as a new game release but with an existing player base that can act like advertisers. The devs get no revenue from existing players, but if old players come back and start chatting up the game positively, it should lead to me sales.

    I am writing this as somebody who played the game for 35 hours and then quit months ago, only to come back to the game recently.
    For me the biggest obstacle used to be the insane grind and tedious nature of the progression.
    Spending hours making gear only to lose it to some stupid mosquito and then having to run back to retrieve it with no weapons.
    This has been greatly improved with the introduction of the world modifiers.
    Being able to bring metals through portals instead of having to haul them on a cart or ship for hours, increasing the droprates and decreased death penaly have all greatly improved the enjoyment I get out of the game. I would hope in the future the devs will introduce even more options to customize the world settings so that more players can find something that suits them.

    • @noahodum9737
      @noahodum9737 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Trust me when I say this - the insane grind and tedious nature of progression is purely created by yourself. With more experience you learn to optimize your playthrough a bit more and learn what's absolutely necessary for progression, versus what's fun for you to do.
      I love the tedious grind of gathering thousands and thousnads of wood and stone and iron and bronze for building whole cities sometimes.
      SOme tips for you to help you make your next playthrough better:
      You do NOT need Bronze Armor. It is extremely slow and tedious grinding out the copper and tin to make and fully upgrade bronze armor. Troll Armor will last you through the swamp. In the swamp you'll want to kill a few abominations to make some root harnesks for you and all the people in your group. An iron mace is necessary to attempt to kill bonemass. With the root armor you will want an iron helmet and iron pants with the banded shield. You can either use frost potions to kill wolves and mine a few silver to create the wolf cloak, but a sometimes easier option is to use your bow to kill a pack of lox one by one by kiting them and create the lox cloak which gives the same bonuses the wolf set does as well. There is virtually no resources needed from the Mountains other than obsidian for arrows, the eggs to summon moder, and onion seeds. The armor you made in the swamp is good through the plains, but it's worth creating the padded armor legs and helmet, you'll be keeping the root harnesk through mistlands for whenever you want to use melee weapons.
      Tools necessary for progression:
      Hammer
      Antler Pickaxe
      Cultivator
      Iron Pickaxe
      Iron Mace
      Outside of that, whatever weapon you choose to wield (Swords are great all around except for the Bonemass fight) and a Banded Iron shield in the swamp, a Black Metal Buckler from the plains, and a Carapace buckler from the Mistlands is all you'll need.
      When you cut down on the metal grind, the game glides at a smooth pace, and you'll only do the tedious grinding when you want to do something cool, rather than feel like you have to.
      That being said. My first playthrough I made every piece of armor and upgraded it fully, as well as every mace and sword and shield. Take your time and enjoy the game!

    The games main problem is the low player cap per server. I think ultimately it keeps it in this strange limbo state that makes the rhythm of gameplay seem repetitive. I think many people would enjoy this game if a new map was based off clan warfare or something. I love the game, but I just found it lacking danger for the most part with the ai. Human enemies would be so much more fun!!!

    Honestly, I couldn't be happier with Irongate. I've watched marketing destroy almost every single game I love. I've watched gaming grow into the mainstream and then become an engine of addiction, depression, and wasted human life. Its tragic. Valheim gives us another option. Valheim, similar to a handful of other games, is a true game. A game developed.... to be a good game.
    What, you want them to rush this? Give us all a bunch of content so we can rush through it and get to the end?
    Its always better to take longer. Iron Gate is one of the few game developers that I trust with my time. In a time where most games destroy our attention spans, rob our wallets, and waste our time with pointless ui clicking repetative lootboxes.... IronGate is a true gem.
    Its not IronGate's fault players get bored. That reflects their own lack of creativity... there are ways to setup servers, competitions, youtube channels, and all sorts of things... the problem is that IronGate is a more adult game; and adults in general lack creativity compared to children. This is personally what I think causes people in Valheim to be a bit less creative than people in Minecraft, in general

    Alright, good video.
    Personally i think they could and should have expanded their development team more.
    I understand your reasoning to keep it small but i do not believe the development would change that much by adding 3-5 more developer's.
    The game is reaching it's third year of Early access and we still have 2 biomes to go (+ actual story ending?).
    A point to business is that competitor's are starting to release similar games and in some cases better (Enshrouded).
    I love Valheim, i will keep playing it, but i don't buy the small team development must.

    updates are super slow so people lose interest in playing and/or following news. I highly doubt the game will come close to 500k players again. 127k players returned for Mistlands. Hildirs Request alone was in development for 8 months from concept to stable and average players was only around 25k when that was done. I don't know, I always hear this "small team" excuse but I have seen single devs make way more content over shorter spans of time in both creating games and in the modding community. A whole new biome with new enemies, items, etc I get it. take a year to develop, but a small questline, a few cosmetics and a few new points of interest for 8 months?

  • @TheNamesNobody

    You giving them too much credit and being far too understanding like most are with most games labeling themselves early access. When modders with no funding move faster then you do, some of which completed the game already. You have to wonder what the fuck is going on over there. You, yourself should be asking yourself why they arent putting more work into helping creators, and streamers more. Its a bit odd to have that big of a surpluss of money come in, and then watch modders with no funding out do you work in every single way. I think at somepoint you need to draw the line, and we all need to give these companies a kick in the ass. They have absolutly taken this money and gone into retired mode, when it should have been overdrive. Especially when you've been filmed talking about wanting to grow and be like minecraft. Lets all cut the shit, because we love a game and acknowledge theyve simply been so slow, not actually listening or helping the community like the could be, and that it has almost killed the game and its crazy potential. To many games coming out this year and next like it that will likely put this on the shelf forever. Some of which went into production AFTER Valhiem came out, to be like Valhiem, only better... Its sad. Too fucking slow, and its totally unnescessary, and you should be kicking them in the but more so then the rest of us seeing as this is a source of income and life for you. You can be a nice person, with good values, lovable, have a beautiful dream and still be too fucking slow and or have an asbolutly shitty work ethic. Love Valhiem, but what a fucking sad story its become solely due to absolute shit management of just about everything thats come after release.

    Maybe this is a hot take but it's just my opinion: valheim is definitely dead. no one plays. You can't find a server to join on most valheim discords and there's nothing new to do--only the same ole same ole. However, I love it and I'm sure like you mention in the video the player base will jump as soon as there's a new update, but don't get it twisted..the game is definitely dead in the most obvious and normal sense of the word. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Dev's approach or the game, cause I absolutely love it, just stating the obvious. Looking forward to another update as well as playing the mmo map you built with Dhakhar.

    [developers incompetently biting off more than they can chew, taking one year to deliver one biome, despite the roadmap publicly available before they sold ten million copies] isn't really a big deal, because triple A games like cyberpunk and battlefield are bad games.
    you found 38 examples of random optimizations in the patch notes of an early access game that was ported to console before it was finished, and yet you still have to use build hacks like giant stretched stones to avoid using too many build pieces in your builds that you showcase to this day.

    • @razmetrez
      @razmetrez Před 9 měsíci

      @@9byte listen mate I appreciate that you're being polite and optimistic, it's not a bad thing to aspire towards, but I don't think the average person can really comprehend just how much money 140 million dollars is because most of us will never see it in our entire lifetimes. corporate tax rate in sweden is about 20% and investment from publisher was probably less than 1m. selling 10 million copies at $20 each, steam takes 30%, taxes are 20%, that's still 100 million dollars. with a team of ten developers (they had less when the game released) that's 10 million per developer. looking at these kinds of numbers and starting to realize what they mean, you have to realize where the majority of the frustration comes from when they aspire to "keep the team small" because they "don't want to end up like soulless AAA developers". in reality they have already made more money than half of the AAA developers who are just propped up by their publishers and are not nearly as profitable as valheim was. and then you realize that people are still buying the game, providing even more money over time... there is really no excuse for anyone with this kind of capital taking literal months to develop one single basic NPC questline.
      valheim had all the potential of minecraft itself, and it was ruined for the same reasons - early success which led to laziness and stagnation due to no urgency to develop new and interesting mechanics and content. Notch famously took many extended vacations and then simply sold minecraft for even more money so he wouldn't have to develop it anymore. the modded minecraft scene provides a glimpse of the potential minecraft had, and yet all mojang develops now is like, 2 new mobs a year, along with a biome with new trees. and sometimes they even say making a new biome is too much (birch forest) and don't deliver features (fireflies in the mangrove swamp AKA literally just pixels in the air). limitation and constraint breeds creativity because you have to figure out how to accomplish more with less - thus games like valheim and minecraft are created. then when both were successful to the tune of millions of dollars, suddenly it seems like creativity slowed to a crawl. because there is no urgency to develop the best possible game anymore, they are allowed to treat it like merely a hobby instead of a job that puts food on the table for their families. Valve is another example of this, they basically stopped creating new innovative games after steam made them literally infinite money. if you're a developer at valve, you have no deadlines.

      Yeah @@razmetrez I definitely get where you are coming from. I dont have any direct proof against them so I remain optimistic but what you've said here could definitely make someone wonder what's happened to all of that money.. especially when it take a year for each biome.
      Personally, I I'm super interested to see if they continue to cover the game after its completed or if they just drop it entirely. I think that will tell us a lot about how much they care about their player base.
