    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    A debate rages as to whether Hitler is really dead, and the operation moves forward as planned.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

      They never intended to make peace with the Soviets, only with the western allies. They actually hoped that with nazis defeated the western powers would cooperate with Germany against their common threat - the USSR. Depending on the conditions the new German government would propose that wasn't impossible, especially in case of UK. Then you have some of the American generals, like Patton, who understood that once the war is over - USSR would be the new enemy.

      If it had worked he could of possibly taken really harsh conditions from the allies but might of been able to convince them of the Soviet threat.

    Operation Valkyrie would have worked, if you believe the movie is accurate. The only flaw, in the plan, came from Olbricht's fear. At the moment of truth, he decides to go to lunch instead of starting Operation Valkyrie. This 3-hour delay is what caused the plan to fail. The element of surprise was lost and Hitler's people had time to regroup. Of course, I'm basing this on the movie. I don't know how accurate that Olbricht scene was. I have a question: Did the staff, who made the phone calls for the coup, just blend back into society or were they discovered and killed?

    • @russelltofts3673
      @russelltofts3673 Před 2 lety

      Another cardinal error the conspirators made was they did not gain control over the radio station. In any coup, this has to be a top priority. According to the memoirs of Albert Speer "Inside the Third Reich", even Goebbels admitted this was one of the failings that caused the coup to fail.

    • @OhNotThat
      @OhNotThat Před 11 měsíci

      The plan couldn't have succeeded, since Hitler WASN'T dead. The plan's idea was to convince the german army and people that the SS assasinated Hitler in a coup, and they're the "counter coup" and thereby quickly consolidate power around themselves and purge the SS and any remaining hitlerites.

    Can someone explain? Why was the guy that drove the car after the bomb blew up with Keitel? Why did Friedrich Fromm say this is treason after he read that book? Why would Keitel like a word with him?

    • @knutritter461
      @knutritter461 Před 3 lety +2

      The guy driving the car remained at Wolf's Lair as he belonged to the soldiers serving there. Fromm said it was treason because aside from Hitler he was the only man with the authority to initiate Valkyrie. And Keitel would like to have a word with Stauffenberg because he knew that Stauffenberg was responsible for the attempt coz he left in time and pokered himself out. There had been enough witnesses!

  • @OhNotThat
    @OhNotThat Před 11 měsíci +1

    Stauffenberg should have bailed the moment it wasn't in the bunker. As the other guy said during the bomb briefing, being INSIDE the bunker magnifies the killing effect of the bomb. 1 charge instead of a double charge and being moved to the conference hut, is what doomed the plot. I know there was a foreboding sense of time running out and the Gestapo being on to them but had they simply maintained better discipline and courage to go when it had the best possible chance to succeed. They could have suceeded in their one chance to take down Hitler.
