DIMASH Qudaibergen: "I'll Die for the Winds of the Mountains" REACTION

  • Dimash Quadaibergen sings this timeless Armenian folk song as a special gift to the people who attended his concert in Yerevan on 29th April 2023.
Renowned international vocal coach William Morris digs deep to find the essence of this great singer’s artistic, intellectual and spiritual gifts.
Dimash learned this song in Armenian with just a few days’ notice, a truly amazing achievement as the song already sounds so 'sung in' to his voice. Says a lot about his technique!!

I just thought I might clarify how I said when he is singing there is no Dimash.
When Dimash is singing it feels to me that he enters the realm of timelessness and as I listen I feel transported into that realm with him.
He takes us along on his journey and we let go of any other thoughts, surroundings and emotions outside of the ones he is invoking.
He is incomparable. I can only usually achieve this state with meditative prayer and he brings me to this place with his voice, emotion and commitment. ❤❤❤

At the first time he performed an Armenian folk song on his concert in Armenia on April 29, 2023.
He'd barely sung the first note and all my body hair stood up. Goosebumps over goosebumps. He learned this song the day before the concert. I heard he wanted to sing another song, but changed his mind and choose this song. He wasn't sure he would feel confident enough to perform it. But eventually he decided to sing it. In the end of the song he imitates an Armenian Flute, the Duduk, with his voice. The whole song is so incredible.

Na kraju pesme Dimash glasom oponaša veličanstveni zvuk duduka. Duduk je nacionalni instrument Jermenije. Varijacije duduka zastupljene su na Kavkazu, Bliskom istoku, Azerbejdžanu, Gruziji, Rusiji, Turskoj. Takođe u Srbiji, Bugarskoj, Makedoniji, Crnoj gori...

His vocals reached inside my body and tore out my heart! It was a stunning performance and everyone leapt to their feet immediately when he finished. In the 2018 show there was Tengri, an inner Mongolian singer, who performed 'Heaven'. This song is of sheer beauty and makes you want to galop the vast plains! The undulating melody over the steady bass is so stark and stripped down- the minimalistic instrumentation allows for the beautiful embellishments of Dimash’s vocals. I agree that it is so respectful for Dimash to not only share his culture but to also partake of the cultures where he performs. Love your analyses of Dimash’s performances- brings back long forgotten memories of music classes from my early life. Cheers from Canada! (Springtime finally! Oh wow yes, the artistry! I'll have to listen a few more times to glean the details. But I hear nature sounds - almost like rustling leaves or grasses in the accompaniment, and insect-like sounds in the voice. I am sure there are microtones in the ornamentation, and some very unexpected intervals to the Western ear. I find myself feeling emotional and restless after listening to it - he really succeeds in conveying deep longing, The technique he uses reminds me of Gennadi Tapizh Tkachenko, who does wonderful imitations and improvisations on nature sounds. Thank you for this William.

I love your responses to Dimash’s music and songs.
And you are absolutely right, that he is so spiritual in his essence, that he connects us up to God in ways we have not imagined.
The beauty that bursts out of everything that he does is unparalleled in my opinion, and I believe that it comes directly from the Heart of God to heal the people of earth in these very harsh times.
Eastern music fascinates and pleasures us, and brings us into the presence of ancient paths that contain wisdom and comfort, beauty and relief, and the release of the tension contained in exotic sounds.
    Thankyou, and bless you.
Perhaps this is like an Armenian version of Adai + Daididau which has that story line you spoke of. ( Gloria Wu told the story line, I think).

Isn't amazing! Apparantly Dimash had prepared another armenian song for the concert but decided to switch to this one (could have been because it was performed on the traditional pre-party the fanclub in the nation the concert is held, arrange for Dears to meet and have fun) and learned it on one day. It really suits him very well. If you have watched the livestream Dimash and his musician friends did before the concert in Antalya, Dimash once again stressed his desire to bring the kazakh culture to the world and how difficult it is to "sell" kazakh folkmusic to the younger generations in his own country. Same problem everywhere I guess with generic pophits and increasing demand.. Yet I love Dimash ability to do any genre and resusal to stay put in one corner. He did this and the beautiful Gesi Baglari in Antalya and also the very "light" peace of Weekend with DJ Burak Yeter.

This is my favourite side of Dimash. So connected with the emotion of the song, he produces something profoundly spiritual. You mention the flattened 2nd. My ear keeps trying to make that a chord change down to Bm but I guess that’s my western ears ignoring what’s actually happening…

hello William, thank you again, Dimash learned another song, but on the day of the concert he changed his mind, learned and performed a more difficult song!"thats was sung at the prepary in Armeniah Dimash told the Armenian program Sputnik the day before, that he wasn't sure he didn't think himself good enough in Armenian language, as you know william he is a fan of the Duduk you hear it in Know, rusies is understood in Armenia, hence the communication in rus. I found your analysis interesting, all the more so because charles Aznavour also fled from Armenia because of the Turkish genocide and the country had to deal with wars and oppressionI searched the internet Cordial greeting from the netherlands
