    A lot of torch losses in the last couple of years has been caused by chop shops cutting newly acquired colonies not being rested before AND after fragging. Most Euphillia have a very fragile window of about 3 months when being moved or fragged. Once a colony has been cut and has lasted 3 months it will normally be rock solid.
    I’ve kept all types of euphyllia over the last 30 years and never seen mortality rates so low since the whole ‘ultra’ fad has decended on the hobby.
    Before leds many of the high end euphyllia looked very drab and would sell for peanuts. LED’s are a double edged sword as whilst they gave us all the colours we love so much they also sadly they have also brought us the chop shop mentality.
    Simply put, torches and all other euphyllia are simple and very hardy IF….you rest them after import and once cut, let them settle for approx 12 weeks. If it’s good after that it’ll be almost bombproof even in less than lesser managed systems.

    If you’re looking for new video series ideas I would love to see an Evo 13.5 series but with stock out of the box hardware. It seems like most high quality videos you find of them all are upgraded with high end lights and I know there are other people like me who would like to see what one can do out of the box

      I have a basically stock Evo. Stock lights and pump. Just added a small power head for more flow, my own filter media in chamber 1 because I hate that foam block thing, a UV sterilizer in chamber 2, a bag of activated carbon in chamber 3. All that stuff cost me maybe $70 and makes maintenance so much easier.
      The stock lights on the Evo are actually very good for the price point. Just stick to corals that require low-medium lighting requirements. You can honestly do a lot with the Evo. It really is a great starter tank. All the things I added just make it easier for me to maintain and don’t necessarily increase its coral keeping capability.
      Check this guy out. He’s done the things I mentioned and has other really good cheap upgrades that help a lot with the Evo. czcams.com/video/R_MiKV7xMgw/video.html

    I keep my refractometer in the garage with my tank so I check calibration on mine every time I use it. My hammers are super happy and I have raised my Mg to 1500+. I have used March's advice and I brought back a single head hammer frag that was an 1/8" in diameter and sometime I would look at it and say "Dang it's toast" now it's opening great every day and doubled in size.

    Ph may have been overlooked especially night time Ph. LPS are not supposed to get down in the 7.6-7.9 range for optimal health. Ever since I’ve been keeping Ph above 8.1 24/7 my corals have done much better.

    Problem with flow in my 125 gallon 6' long tank. I know you need flow to keep things moving but it seems even when the power heads are on 30%, the anemone gets battered. Just got it a week ago. It's attached to the rock, in the light, but it's on the side of the rock, with half of its base around it. Not much tentacle extension. If I set the power heads so they LIGHTLY DANCE, it seems like my tank won't have enough flow?

I am thinking of making a torch coral garden but I would like to mix with hammers and frogspawn. I think I recall you saying that as-long as the corals body do not touch they are ok? So, what are the causes of brown jelly disease? I had two large colonies of Torches which were multiplying to the point that they overtook my tank, I purchased a new larger tank, broke up the colonies keeping around 40 heads, over the past 6 months that number has dwindled because of brown jelly

    • @liquidpapersynth
      @liquidpapersynth Před 2 lety

      Hi, over feeding is main cause of brown jelly in euphylia I have found.

    • @billclarke7893
      @billclarke7893 Před 2 lety

      @@liquidpapersynth Interesting, but I found that when my other tank was high in phosphate & nitrates the torches did better, now my water conditions in the new tank are more in check with weekly water testing & water changes, because I have more time available, and I actually feed less but with a larger variety of foods, those remaining torches are now scattered around the tank, different par values, different flow conditions, and I still get random losses of heads, very frustrating

    • @liquidpapersynth
      @liquidpapersynth Před 2 lety

      @@billclarke7893 I have found the Tropic Marin dip to be effective in treating brown jelly with no apparent stress to the coral. It Will also kill any euphylia eating flatworms but not their eggs. They live inside the head and can’t be seen. The dip will show the dead worms. 🤞

    off topic here March, but have you ever tried to catch a fish in your aquarium? Any recommendation in terms of product? I have a wrasse and she has been picking on all my fish, understandable since she is the biggest fish in the tank. She was not always that but she has grown so much in just 4 months. I need to rehome her but she is ultra smart. Well onto your subject, luckily I have never had any problem with torches except one and that is because I bought it from a bad LFS but luckily it was 40 bucks so not too much of a loss. My aquarium is high in nitrates 30-40 range and they like it, of course I have no sps so I don't have to worry. Some people here in the US will spend 1K for torches. Also feed them rod's food or reef frenzy, they absolutely love it, they don't like the cheap stuff because they will grab it then I see they release it after a bit, but the frenzy and rods food, they eat it. You have to hand feed them, I do it once a week, but really enjoy seeing them eat it.
