  • A playthrough of Sega's 1994 versus-fighting game for the Sega Genesis, Art of Fighting.
Played through as Ryo on the normal difficulty level.
Art of Fighting made the rounds on a surprising number of consoles despite its lack of popularity when compared to the likes of Street Fighter II or Fatal Fury. I always liked the arcade game, and the SNES and PC Engine ports were very good at mimicking the original despite hardware limitations.
The Sega Genesis version's game play holds up well, but the graphics and sound really don't. The reduced color depth on the Genesis is readily apparent, the characters are downright tiny compared to the other versions, and the smaller sprites make the stages feel too big and open in comparison. The quality of the digitized voice clips is also pretty awful, so I guess it's a good think that most of them are missing in this version.
But, the massive downgrade in presentation from the Turbo and SNES aside, Art of Fighting feels and plays like it should. All of the stages and here, as are the bonus games and most of the cutscenes. Overall, it's pretty good! It's the weakest of the Art of Fighting ports, but it still is pretty fun to spend an hour or two with - especially with a friend so you aren't stuck playing as only two characters.
But really, if you want to play a 16-bit port, the SNES or TurboCD versions are absolutely the way to go. For a Sega-branded programming job, this was a bit weak.
