DIY: How to Change the Upper Drive Belt on MTD Gold Lawn Mower - Bolens or Yard Machines

  • This video shows step by step how to change the Upper Drive belt on a MTD Gold lawn mower.
Symptoms that signify it is time to change this belt:
    1. Mower stalls when moving uphill. The engine does not strain but the mower will not move.
    2. The mower will not change speeds when adjustments are made on the variable drive speed lever.
Please leave a comment below if you have any questions about the process. You can also leave a comment if you have a request for a video covering another aspect of this mower.

This was the PERFECT video for me. There are so many different lawn tractors, but this one matched mine (MTD) perfectly. Most drive belt videos focus on the lower (longer) belt. TightWadDIY has a video for the lower drive belt too, but this is the one I needed. By the way, the biggest pulley needs a 7/8" wrench (I used a closed end wrench - a socket will not fit underneath the frame bar). You need to put a screwdriver in the hole to stop the pulley from turning and then squeeze the 7/8" wrench in place and pull hard! It takes some strength, but it moved. Loosen the bolt on the pulley and it will be loose enough to remove the old belt and put on the new one. Thanks so much for this great video!

To change a lower drive belt on an automatic or pedal drive (I guess about a 2003) I removed deck, lifted the rear of tractor with a chain fall. Release the upper belt tensioner spring and slip off belt. Then adjust to fit a vice grip type clamp and clamp the top of the variable pulley to the bottom of the pulley bracket so it does not turn when you loosen the bearing retaining nut (one at bottom of the variable pulley). Loosen this nut to where it is almost all the way off. Push up the pulley till bearings bottom on nut head. This will allow enough clearance from the belt keeper bracket to remove and install new belt in bottom pulley groove. You may also have to loosen the three ten millimeter head bolts that hold the pulley bracket to the frame to get side clearance. When you can thread the belt around the pulley retighten all bolts. Hold the crankshaft pulley with a pipe wrench and remove pulley bolt and drop pulley to remove the belt. Also you can remove the belt sleeve guide by unscrewing it so it does not interfere with the new belt that you are now pushing through from underneath. Push the crank pulley back on and put belt around it and push it all the way up so it is inside the keepers. Re torque bolt. Then reinstall the guide bolt/sleeve. Then thread the belt around the two tensioners underneath. Then reinstall the upper belt and reattach the tensioner spring. Job easy and simply done.

I'm wondering if I can pry or hammer the metal next to the largest pulley outward just a bit so I won't have to remove it. That way, the belt could be replaced from the side of the mower without pulling the battery.
Also, there are many versions of this riding mower. Mine is labeled as a White Outdoor and I have seen them at Wal Mart with a black paint job. Can't remember what name they had there. You can tell they are the same tractor because all the controls are in the identical spot.

Cody Sipes if you have a variable speed pulley, try using a lubricant on it. The center ring on a variable speed pulley should easily move up and down to allow the mower to change gears.

I can do everything but the pulley but I don't have the right size wrench. What size wrench did you use?

tina brodie I’m sorry I don’t remember the size and I no longer have this mower.

Mine was a 3/4" iirc. Pretty much the biggest one that came in one of the little sets you get at Sears/Lowes/HomeDepot.

cristal Enriquez I’m not sure. I don’t have this mower anymore. I sold it when I bought my zero turn. I suggest buying the OEM.

My belt slipped off mowing too deep of grass, I want to put it back on without replacing it.

get saved Most likely your belt that slipped off was the deck belt and not a drive belt. I have a video for all three videos on this channel though.

You did not show how Belt goes around the Engine Pulley.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  Před 5 lety

RICHARD maaske The upper drive belt is only around the three rear pulleys. It doesn’t go around the engine pulley. There is a separate lower drive belt that you may be working on instead. I have a video for that as well.

I noticed you didn't show the loosening of the pulley nut. Easier said than done dude... smh...

Haha. Yeah they are on pretty tight. I didn't have a tripod to hold my camera when I recorded this one. I couldn't video and loosen nuts at the same time. Everything about that pulley is difficult.

A little WD40 loosened mine right up.

I agree. When you loosen (not remove) the pulley nut, what happens to the pulley? Does it just allow the pulley to tilt a bit upwards so that the drive belt can be squeezed in or out of position? Is it best to use a socket extender to access the pulley nut from above the battery compartment?

Larry Gentry This was one of my first videos. I disagree that it’s disorganized but the camera work and audio isn’t my best.
