  • This is a simple step by step to install a 38 inch mower deck on a MTD Yard Machines lawn tractor. I had to convert my lawn tractor from snow plow to lawn tractor. You can use these instructions if you need to service the drive belt or any pulleys or mower cutting blades. If you have a loose belt this info might help (regarding the spring installation)

    Purchased this to replace a guide pulley czcams.com/users/postUgkxO9seYZjlnuP5UvMkb7osQW3WxPVeSnPk on our John Deere x304 snowblower. As I stated in the title, it is just about perfect. The stock pulley has a spacer at the bottom. I used four washers to emulate said spacer, and it works perfectly now. Great product, and great price especially if compared to typical JD prices.

    Your video was a life saver for us. Had the deck off for about 2 weeks and could not remember which holes the back legs went into. And did not know that the PTO spring had to go in a certain hole for the 38 inch mower. Great video and you explained everything so well. Very helpful

      Yah I know the manual is not detailed on the spring and belt locations. Glad this video helped you out. One day im going to do the transmission belt and will film that too. I love this tractor. Still runs amazing after all these years. Got mine for 999 bucks. Looking now they are selling new at 1500-1800 bucks. Prices have jumped high over the past few years. I bought this for the bag leaf system and the plow. If you reinforce the frame as shown in one of my other videos this thing can push lots of snow. Had 0 slippage problems with the transmission or brakes. Deck cuts perfect and the bagger system stores leaves. I get 40 plus recycle bags worth of leaves each fall so this saves my back big time.

      Where can I find the parts manual?

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 4 lety

      @@Ben-we7vrMTD website. Lift your seat to lawn tractor and the serial number to your model is there. Type it in on the website and you can get the repair parts manual. My belt use to be loose as well. Did you put the spring in the 38' deck hole? MAybe the belt you purchased was labeled wrong. these things have a very limited tolerance to be loose or tight. The pulleys only engage so far and the handle that pulls the spring back to swing the arm on the pulleys only goes so far. So the belt must be the right size. Good luck.

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 4 lety +1

      The front bar has a nut that holds the front of the deck. You can tighten it and force the whole deck forward and this might be enough to tighten the slack on the belts around the pulleys. Just a thought.

    • @Ben-we7vr
      @Ben-we7vr Před 4 lety

      Belt is from when I bought it. Also, the blade runs even when I disengage. The motor is from another mower but that's shouldn't affect this.

I seem to have a large spring similar to the one you show to disengage/engage the mower belt. It has a braded wire that is frayed and has some serious bends in this wire. Would you think this could be what is needed to raise the front of the deck?

    @ :36 , can you please tell me if the bolt with large black washer to the RIGHT of the Pulley on the LEFT of screen is a special bolt that allows for movement of the bracket its attached to (like partially threaded) ? My dads yard man mower is missing this bolt and i used a regular bolt and nut but then it didnt seem right. Its a second hand mower my brother bought and has been sitting up and I'm trying to get it running. So wondering what type of bolt that is and is there another big washer or spacer underneath it being held by the nut ? Thanks for your help.

    I noticed the arms have two holes that can be used. Is there a reason to use the lower holes versus the upper holes? If you use the upper holes your deck would sit up higher at all times so would be good for St augustine grass where you usually have to raise it to the maximum?

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 2 lety

      Yes, you can change cut angle. Also if you raise front pin bolt and sides it will effect deck position and may solve some users issues regarding a slippery belt. Engine mount is fixed. I've never touched my side risers but have adjusted the front bolt. I keep my deck at 3 on the up down handle.

      Scott Burnie I will take a look at it. This was how it was when I bought it new. The one thing I changed was the tension spring hole! OK took a close look at the diagram and my mower deck. Just to make it clear my deck is 38inch. There are 2 configurationso depending on the deck and size. The bar that hold the sway bar part is bolted in the 2nd hole of 3 so it is correct. The sway arm is bolted in the FIRST hole closest to the pully and the second hole is exposed as show in the video. The spring does NOT connect to the pully covers but the inside there is a connection part for the spring. So my deck is correct in this video.

      Ok when you get one set it to continiuty and connect each test lead to you safety seat switch below your seat. Press seat down and your meter should change to show a connection. If it does not replace the seat safety switch . I can take you through each test to the ignition switch if you need to but start with the simple stuff first. The sensor in the handle engage also needs to be tested for continuity. Also press in the clutch and the yellow throttle speed switch all the way to lock position. This allows you to get off the mower when it is still running as this overrides the seat safety switch. Testing needs to be done at this position as well. On mtd site their is wire diagrams of the entire mtd tractor so if you know someone near you can have them systematically test each sensor and safety switch to find the problem.

      Michelle Brennan in the video the front bar is adjustable. It needs to lock in and the right left back are held buy height control. There is adjustments nuts on each side. Make sure the belt guard is in the proper hole. And the height lever is down when hook up.

      On the front there is one pole that slides in with a nut! Adjust this nut to change the front height. The back is adjusted on each side. Look at when I installed the clips on the sides to hold the raise and lower part. There is a nut on each side that can be loosen and the deck raised or lowered to level out. Hope this helps.

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 6 lety

      There are 3 adjustments. The front arm and the sides. There is an adjustment nut on the front to adjust the front and the 2 bolts on the sides to adjust the back. Save your money and set the level to 3 on the up and down knob and place a piece of wood the thickness of the deck and start adjusting. Remove the board and viola perfect level. Later

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 4 lety

      My deck has to points that can be adjusted at the back of the deck. forward of the deck it sits on a pivot arm. Its odd your deck does not have bolts that attach to the frame.If its low on one side lower the side you can adjust to level it out. Then the height lever keep at 2-3 so I does not chew your grass. I never go below 3 when lowering the deck with the control.

    Hi.. ive done this after a belt replacement.. but ive seem to have struck an issue..
    After checking deck goes up and down.. i noticed it was rather hard to raise right back up to 5... from about 3..
    From what i can see ive done everything right.. why would i be having this issue?

    • @gereral1_jackofalltrades
      @gereral1_jackofalltrades  Před 4 lety

      Did you place rear deck pins in correct holes? The position of the deck will effect the 1-5 height handle. Is the front pin set in the hole correctly? Is the belt the right type? The design of deck is simple. 2 pins rear 1 arm on front engage cable with a spring and lock pin. Not sure what could be causing level handle to not go above 3.
