I remember this show...it was Madison Square Garden at a Golden Oldie Show. This was the second consecutive year Martha was the opening act for the show. Jay Black and the American and the 4 Seasons were billed as the highlights of the show. Most of the audience were from LI and New Jersey. She had been on the show previously with the Vandellas. This was her first time doing the oldie show at Madison Square Garden w/o the Vandellas.
Thanks for sharing this rare clip. This is the Martha I love & miss, when she still had that glorious voice and hadn't yet resorted to singing in that irritating higher octave that she adopted later on.
You are most welcome Butchiebaker. I appreciate the supporting information on the great musicians in this cherished clip. Thanks for watching and by all means......stay tuned!
@butchiebaker Wow! These guys are TIGHT! For a minute there, until I read your backstory on who they are, I had almost assumed that they were a group of top-drawer session players from NY, LA or Detroit, for that matter. (I almost mistook the sax player for Blue Lou Marini, from the very first SNL house band of '75-'80). In any event, this clip amply shows that these dudes could give those 5-star A-listers from the aforementioned major cities a SERIOUS run for their money!
Yes. Very unfortunate. Not exactly sure what happened to her voice but it passed it's sell by date very early on. She hasn't sounded good in over 40 years.
You can hear her using that strange vibrato that I can only compare to an early No Doubt Gwen Stefani. It sounds okay but considering she used have an amazingly beautiful voice, it makes me sad.
I think the voice she uses now isn't by choice but the result of some sort of vocal damage or palsy. She has sounded really awful for decades now and was quite young when it started. Even here in 1976 you can hear the beginnings of it when she was in her 30s.
The awesome “Grannies Bathwater band out of Springfield Missouri. I grew up around this band. Awesomeness.
Martha looks and sounds very good.
She sounds good here !

My brother playing bass, Donald, "Don" Shipps.
I wish I could hear the end of Heat wave....and it is a great clip thank you.

The late great Bobby Lloyd Hicks on drums from Springfield, MO!

This must have been when her voice was in the middle of changing from what it was in the 60s and early 70s to what it is now.

Yes, this was Martha pre-the annoying soprano voice she now uses.

That's explained why so never went no way 😕
This must be the time when Drug use really changed her voice. So sad.
