The USS Wisconsin was known as the "Cleanest Ship" as she was never hit in WW2 compared to her sister ships, so the captain and crew were not happy. The reason she got hit is because th captain wanted to give the 5-inch gunners some fun shooting at a small mountain island while the 16-inch guns bombard the cost. But this island is where the North Korean cannon was. The mountain is no longer there today. Love this story.

My Dad was on Guam right after the "16 Battleship" guns stopped shelling the up on the flats up above the bluffs(and everywhere else) but Dad said some of the shells didn't explode. He said the enertia energy was incredible you had to see it. The shell weighed so much where they hit the ground they tunneled humping up the ground for well over a hundred yards.
The USS Texas deserves some love, as well. The captain intentionally flooded her to shoot further than the guns' maximum range. It is funny to think of a ship listing to its side while shooting.

But, this was just 1 "long" gun and due to aiming capabilites at the time long range was pointless. So that gun could 9nly be elevated to 15 degrees...
